Root The bickering needs to stop

Hey guys,

Usually I lurk, but today i'm going to say my bit. Recently as i'm sure everyone knows, P3droid posted an article condemning us for our actions (he sure helped us along though!) and some people on this forum went ballistic. I kept reading through the thread "important post by P3droid" looking for updates and possible speculation on the situation but I was almost entirely greeted with a flame-war. I would link a few poignant examples but they are so numerous and easy to spot I have no need to, but take this new thread for example:

http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/312430-how-get-wireless-tether-working-gb-leak.html

The OP is just asking how to use a wireless tether, specifically stating he doesn't want the thread to devolve into another tethering debate, but that is exactly what happens. Two weeks ago nothing of this sort would have ensued and he would have been graciously helped by a couple forums members. I'm not arguing for or against tethering (I do have an opinion though), but after this recent P3droid fiasco people have become zealous and can't comprehend that opinions different from their own still exist. I don't understand how it was alright to talk about tethering before, but now it's suddenly a taboo subject, not suitable for an internet forum....

I hope that the few people who have been leading this charge to forum feudalism read this thread, and screw their big heads back on.

If I am banned or this thread is deleted due to the nature of the subject, It's no loss to me, considering the behavior of some is sending the entire Droid X forum to the shitter.

The problem isn't the question, it's the act. Whether it is morally acceptable or not, do we - as a forum - want to walk that very fine, grey line? The question is easily answerable with a quick google search.

In short: It is NOT our right or duty to police others. It IS our right and duty to police the forums. Just as when the guy who posted IncrediblyReEngineered got railed because he used Liberty's base and it was taken down, this should happen.

If you want to tether, then by all means tether. If you don't want to pay, don't pay. However, much like rooting, the responsibility is yours. This forum has always been a positive upbeat place full of friendly people because we keep the shady stuff out.

How is this, especially in light of recent events (true or otherwise), any different?

I agree; if VZW is really tracking this type of activity (tethering) let them handle it and don't worry about what people do with their phones.

I'm with you. I could care less what others are doing with their phones. I've ignored all the bickering as well. I've got other things to focus on than the thread in question here.

By providing your opinion on the situation you become no different then the ones you set out to talk about, not too mention starting another thread on the same situation. Everyone here is entitled to their own opinions and you are pointing out that if some gives theres and some one else gives there and so on that it is wrong. This is a forum thread and the orignal thread had serious issues in it so you shouldn't be stirring the pot more by creating a thread to talk down about an entire community that you put yourself in.......if you dont like it leave, nobody is threaening anyone and no harm is coming from a debate......if you need to blow off steam feel free to join us.....bro...lol

so now, pretty much the "how do I tether" question has become the same as when someone comes on and asks "how do I clear my internet cache so no one can see it?" or some other version of that question...
if you are asking how, then you obviously know you shouldn't, but I'm not going to tell you what you can and can't do. I'm just not going to give you information that allows you to do things you shouldn't be doing. Plus, if these people would learn how to use the search function, all these things are more than spelled out in these forums. I don't care about tethering. I also agree with MyTj, there is no reason for a new thread to be started so you can say your piece (please understand, this isn't a flame). If you wanted to say something about the topic, then post in the topic.

Steven, can you merge this?

I appreciated the help in the previous thread guys.

I'm sorry if anyone disagrees. Feel free to voice your opinion in the appropriate places. I only wanted to make sure I could get to the internet on my Xoom if I needed too and there was no hotspots on my vacation. I don't usually tether but if I'm in a pinch its a life saver.

but after this recent P3droid fiasco people have become zealous and can't comprehend that opinions different from their own still exist.

here is my issue...there is no opinion on this matter...what is being done is ILLEGAL...that is FACT, not opinion...and i don't think that illegal activities should necessarily be promoted on these boards...

if you want to do illegal things with your phone...cool i won't judge you...but don't expect me to be happy, or supportive when those illegal acts have a potential impact on ME and my phone...i like my unlimited data plan...and if this becomes the final nail in the unlimited coffin...i will be upset...if Verizon decides to take action on all rooted users because people have been abusing the tethering feature...ill be pissed...

I don't usually tether but if I'm in a pinch its a life saver.

then you should add it to your plan...if i don't have a car...and i need one i can't just take my neighbors...

Here's the thing, if Verizon is so concerned with people tethering without paying for it why don't they just have the tethering apps removed from the Market? It would make sense to me.

they did remove the Team Black Hat app because it had the tethering hack for GB...

This is the end all statement...there is no arguement with this...

if you want to do illegal things with your phone...cool i won't judge you...but don't expect me to be happy, or supportive when those illegal acts have a potential impact on ME and my phone......

This is the perfect followup....a million thanks to you sir

I'm not here to say whether it's legal or not to tether because you feel you have unlimited data; people should not be condemned or castigated because they use their phones as they please.

I leave you with this though: VZW says it's not ok for you to tether without paying them $20 monthly, so if you tether without paying, be prepared to suffer the consequences.

I agree with a couple of the other posts. Is talking about how to tether you phone and go around the service that Verizon provides OK? If someone comes on here and asks how can I get a free copy of this app they will be told that we do not talk about that here and that they should paid for it and support the developers. Is this the same trying to help someone work around a paid service on their phone? I think more than anyone we all agree what someone does with their phone is what they do with their phone. The question is since this community has taken a very hard stance on not helping, talking about and even calling people out for talking about free paid apps, would talking about how to get free tethering be the same thing?

I don't think just cause Verizon says not to do something it is illegal.

You signed a contract saying you wouldn't do it. That makes it illegal.

I have to say, I'm more and more of the mind that tethering needs to be bluntly lumped into the category of pirating apps. You are violating your contract and in the end, it impacts all of us. As was said above, that's everyone's own moral decision to make - but it doesn't mean we should endorse it here.

I don't think just cause Verizon says not to do something it is illegal.
what!?...they OWN the network that provides the service...you can't use their services without paying for them!...

if you owned a dairy farm...and you sell milk...would you be cool if one of your customers told his buddies..."well i already pay for milk...so you guys can just go over to the farm and take the milk without paying..."

I'm not here to say whether it's legal or not to tether because you feel you have unlimited data; people should not be condemned or castigated because they use their phones as they please.

I leave you with this though: VZW says it's not ok for you to tether without paying them $20 monthly, so if you tether without paying, be prepared to suffer the consequences.

normally i would be 110% cool with this stance...however in this case the activities of some look to be having sweeping ramifications for ALL of Verizon's customers...

i have rooted my phone...i know that i can't return it for a replacement because i voided my warranty...that is the consequence for rooting...and it effects me, and ONLY me...

now if i decide to return it anyway...and Verizon starts to get pissed (which they are), that is an act that effects EVERYONE and should be unacceptable...

its the same with tethering...by stealing these services from Verizon there is a good chance that ALL OF US are going to suffer from the actions with stricter data plans, more locked down OS's...etc...

Ok - here's my take on this one:

I think good points were made all around and our motto is something like attack the message and not the messenger or attack issues and not each other.

So - I think on one hand this OP asked to discuss the nature of the forum and it's turning into the nature of tethering, whereas the other thread wanted to discuss the nature of tethering and it turned into the nature of the forum - or something like that.

A thread merge at this point would surely look confusing to me, so I'm going to lock this one.

Not because I'm penalizing it, but because it seems to me that what can be said on this subject has been said, and over-saying things can lead to bad feelings, and none of us want that.

If anyone feels I'm in error on this lock, please PM me, my door's always open.
