The BIG 2.1 Thread

Hmmm... I don't have that option. When I click on my Gmail account (GAFYD), my options are...

Sync Calendar
Sync Contacts
Sync Gmail

... all of which are checked for me.

You previously mentioned not having a Picasa account. Have you set one up and created a Web Album? It could possibly not show up in the settings unless you have Picasa configured in your online Google account and a Web Album posted.

lol it wasn't my call. My best guess on the answer is that 2.1 isn't officially out yet, so there really is no need for tons of threads on the same subject. As it has not yet been released, it would be redundant. Screen protectors and what not, on the other hand, are readily available.
How about a sub-forum for 2.1? There appear to be a large enough volume of folks that are treading into 2.1 that it may posibly justify a sub-forum? Would help keep 2.1 separated from the normal questions while also eliminating the one "catch-all" 2.1 thread issue that is being noted.

i have now downloaded the gallery.apk.zip from 2 different sites and when i unzip them there is no gallery.apk file, is this because i am using a mac to so this? or is there something else i am doing wrong?

update, i actually tried to do this just using my phone and it worked great, amazing that my cell phone can do something my mac cant.

It unzipped just fine on my mac. You have to do it with the terminal though. The gui packager will unpack the apk as well. It's too smart for it's own good. From the command line just do a "unzip filename.apk.zip" and that will get you filename.apk .

OK, I broke it. lol

I have the original Gallery icon on one of my screens dedicated to media apps (...using Home++).
I hit that and opened the normal (2.01) Gallery menu that shows all of the individual folders (photo icons dedicated to different folders for different media or apps).
I then hit the one containing photos I took with the Droid camera.
It gave me the choice of Galleries (2.01 or 2.1). It also gave me the choice to open by default, which I checked.
I had played with it since yeaterday, so I figured I'd like it to open that photo-folder by default. Unfortunately, it now tries to open all of the media folders by default.

Problem: It apparently can't show large photos loaded onto the SD. Now I can't find how to get back the screen where it asks me which gallery to use.

Do I have to uninstall & reinstall, or does anyone know how to undo the "Automatically use Gallery 2.1" option?

I had been playing with it prior, but obviously not enough.

FYI - the 2.1 clock app is not compatible with Contact Owner, one of my favorite programs (displays owner contact info on the lock screen)...when I run the clock it displays the contact owner info and covers up most of the clock, making it unusable, even though the screen has not been locked...just in case anyone else is using the Contact Owner app.

Yep ... learned that one last night. The hard way. :o :(

Yep, I set one up yesterday and uploaded pictures last night... those pictures aren't showing up in my 2.1 V1 Gallery. My guess is that it has to do with my Gmail being GAFYD.

He gave you the instructions. You find Terminal in the Applications folder or you can type Terminal in the spotlight search icon (upper right corner). When that opens just type unzip filename.... you may have to change directory to the location of the zipped file first. To do that it is 'cd directoryname'

thanks, thats actually the info i was looking for, i found terminal but didnt know how to navigate to the propper directiry, its like you read my mind

Ok I was messing around.

What are you using to unzip it? Once you unzip it you can just gmail it to yourself. From within Gmail you can download it to the phone then use Astro to go into the "downloads" folder and install it from there.

thanks, worked great, i think its wierd that when you dbl click a zipped file, it unzips it but not correctly. thanks for the added info

Arent Macs supposed to be easier to use than windows???? I didnt have a problem getting it on my phone :)

haha, yeah yeah. They are great (I have both Mac and PC at home though because some work sites only function in Internet Explorer 7, not even IE 8 ugh). It really is nice when using the regular windows side of it, but when you venture off into the command line it gets a bit harder.

OK, I simply uninstalled and reinstalled the app to get back my "choice" screen.

Disappointments:
-As mentioned already, the zoom looks just plain terrible.
-Interfacing with the original (2.01) Gallery still installed, it won't retrieve the photos from the SD card. However, if I choose a picture through Astro file directory, it will open it, along with a thumbnail slider at the bottom. I have 7MP shots on there, and still with the zoom they are simply wretched.

-So, it appears that this Gallery is great with only shots taken using the droid's camera.
For ME, The very kewl layout (using the accelerometer) is just not worth not being able to view everything with only one gallery, nor is it worth sacrificing zoom quality.

The other (very little gripe I have is that it doesn't make the most use of the screen real estate. There could be at least one more line of thumbnails in portrait mode.

Everybody going all Chicken Little about the illegality of all this, I dunno. I do understand that the forum administration has to protect itself from such, but I think this is a release by Google just to tease everyone. (What better press release can there be, complete with consumer feedback...) I do hope the finished one is better.
Just like the 2.1 Clock "leak". That thing is just as Plain-Jane as could be, but everyone gobbles it up. We're just Googles beta test-bed as they intend us to be.

-Am I totally wrong on this?

I keep forgetting the Droid is probably the first linux device a lot of people have ever used. So I assume terminal commands are known. I've been using linux since the mid 90's so the command line stuff is fairly old hat to me. Then OSX came out and it's now Apple is the world's largest Unix operating system distributor. Most of the command line stuff just syncs up between the two. Glad you guys figured it out. The Mac will screw up gzipped tar files as well, it will just keep uncompressing until there's nothing left to uncompress....

I have pictures taken full resolution with my Rebel XTi at 3888x2592 and I veiw the pictures just fine in the new gallery. I zoom in to where I can see just the pupil of an eye (Face Shot, as it will only zoom in so far) and it is not distorted. I also have pictures from another digital camera, an Olympus, of mine that are 3648x2736 that I view just fine also.

It is odd that you are having these problems.

What does release date have to do with redundancy?

Maybe this will make my point a bit clearer:

One of the more recent posts that got merged in here was asking questions about 2.1 and it totally fell by the wayside amidst all the back and forth. It's hard to even find the posts anymore. There have been quite a few threads merged into this one that are incomprehensible now. You can't see who is replying to whom (for the most part) as the posts get all mixed together.

Anyways it's not a big deal, I am just saying you guys should consider that it's not always bad to have more than one post about a subject, and don't need to run around cleaning up the forum all the time -- it makes things a pain to read.

The other day there were some 20ish posts in a row in the Droid forum that got moved. I know that your initial reaction is that shows people are posting in the wrong place, but to me, that means you guys don't understand how people are using the forum.

Still thanks for your response and hope this is helpful rather than critical.

.

Most people aren't using 2.1 yet so if we have a ton of threads about it then the majority of users who have posts related to 2.0.1/2.0 will get drowned out which they shouldn't be. Once 2.1 becomes official then that will change but for now this is pretty much the way it is. Opening a 2.1 sub forum is up to the Admin but I don't think he will, you could post it in the Suggestion Box though. We move threads because they are in the wrong forum, it's very simple to follow the GUIDLINES up top, but most people don't take the time to read it. We understand how people are using the forum, but unfortunately some people are using it improperly. If every single post stayed in the General section then you would need to browse 5 pages back to find them, instead we keep the relevant stuff here and all the support/error/guides/how-to stuff in the other 2.

I'm not trying to argue or whatever with you, just trying to explain it in a way that makes sense.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you're saying and why the mods do what they do, and why they think it helps.

I'm not sure you get what I am saying though.

My point is that looking through a few pages of threads to find the one you want is easier than looking through a merged thread to find the posts you want. Also, people posting information that might not be categorized correctly really does no significant harm and maybe even varies the discussions in a good way. Letting a little chaos run it's course is maybe a good thing once in awhile.

Any good user experience designer worth his salt would tell you that you don't change the way a user uses a site, you change the site to fit the user. When you have a whole page of "Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved Moved," what does that say to you? That people are stupid and don't follow directions? Or, that maybe you haven't allowed for people to be a little messy and rash and have multiple simultaneous conversations?

Just think about it, that's all I ask. Anyways, this is not a huge deal :) have a happy new year and you know i still <3 AF ;)

I see what your saying about all the moved threads, but that's the way the Admin wants it to be, clean and neat, at least as much as it can be. Good threads get lost in the pile of newer threads that didn't need to be posted because there are 5 or 10 others on the same subject already. If people searched first or checked around then 9 times out of 10 they wouldn't need to post a new thread, but they don't so we are forced to clean up the mess that results. To have a good forum we need to keep quality threads around, but if we have a page full of posts about the same thing that was posted a few hours ago then we become just another messy forum. Maybe there are some other ways we could fix the issue but right now the only way to do it is move/merge threads and pray that people search and read the guidelines before they start a new thread.

If you have been around long enough you know we use to have just the one DROID forum, remember how messy it was when the DROID launched? It was impossible to find anything with ease and that's when the Admin(s) decided to add the extra forums and make some of us into Guides whose sole purpose is to move/merge threads so to keep it clean(er) then what it currently was.

Happy new year to you and everyone else also.

I figured it out in a way where you don't even have to use terminal. Take the zip file and right click, get info. In the file name there just delete the .zip so the extension is just .apk

If the file has already unzipped, select all the files and compress. Then follow those instructions.
