The BIG 2.1 Thread

Yep... vastly different from Greeks roms.

I can't tell you where to find it, but if you know where to look for Greeks release, then you are in the right place. ;)
Ahh yea i found greeks from a forum that reposted it..didnt find the original one i dont think lol...rats

Can someone reccomend to me the most stable release as of yet? i have heard it is the first realease. but does that have the video wallpapers?

Just give me your opinion on what i should go with. thanks!

Go with the humancyborg release.

Hmmm... I think I give up for now. Is there a 101 thread for this type of stuff anyone can direct me to?

Here are the line-by-line steps I'm attempting... and failing...

1. Settings ->SD card & phone storage -> Unmount SD card.
2. Plug phone into PC via USB (USB debugging connected).
3. Open command prompt on PC.
4. type "cd C:\android\tools" and press Enter.

It changes to the correct directory, but this is the point where I get locked up. Here are the different things I have tried as the next step...

5. type "adb shell" and press Enter
Permission Denied

5. type "adb shell su" and press Enter
su: access granted courtesy of magicandroidapps.com
sh-3.2# (It won't let me type anything after this even though curser continues to blink)

5. type "adb shell su mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system" and press Enter
su: access granted courtesy of magicandroidapps.com
su: exec failed for -o Error:Permission denied
C:\android\tools>

Also, when I open Terminal Emulator from my Apps, I get the same "Permission denied" error immediately.

I'm sure it's something stupid I missed... maybe I'll play some more later.
I really want to try the humancyborg release, but I'm concerned that I can no longer get to adb shell (to perform the format commands) since going to 2.1V1. Can someone please tell me what I might be missing?

I figured it out in a way where you don't even have to use terminal. Take the zip file and right click, get info. In the file name there just delete the .zip so the extension is just .apk

If the file has already unzipped, select all the files and compress. Then follow those instructions.

That works too, but you may as well get comfortable with the command line.

Eugene has released a 2.1 ROM that can be flashed very easily since it is a update.zip! Just put it on the root of your sdcard (like you did with the 2.0.1 update and superuser.zip) and then inside recovery select apply update.zip. I can't personally say how good it is compared to humancyborg's or greek's cuz I haven't used it, but from what I hear it is just as stable and basically the same thing.

It is at the same place as all the other, and I don't think it is against the rules to cross link another forum because this forum doesn't really have the dev stuff the other does. We here are more for help and support to the bigger community where as the other place is for the select few who are willing to hack their DROID's. Anyway AllDroid.org - View forum - Droid is where the ROM's get released, hopefully some dev's would be willing to come over here but since it hasn't happened yet I see no point in hiding the place they stay.

I don't think you're going to like Eugene's ROM. The auto brightness is broken, and since it changes the device from Droid to Nexus One, your apps don't automatically become replaced.

It seems pretty quick though (I downloaded the optimized version with the modified PNGs), but then again, I didn't have any apps installed/running to boggle the thing down.

I think I'm good with humancyborg's ROM for now.

Quick question before I start the 2.1 install process.

What stays on the SD card and what gets wiped? If I backup all of my apps through Astro, do I need to stick them on the computer before I wipe the phone, or do they stay on the SD card? What about music, or pictures taken with the camera? I suppose just to be safe I should back it all up anyways.

Finally, does anybody know of a decent program for backing up and restoring my call log and SMS messages that will work on 2.1 as well we 2.0.1?

Your sd card will be fine, but if you want to back it up you can, nothing gets deleted though. I'm not sure what apps work well for calls and sms though, maybe mybackup? I think that is what its called.

Nevermind, I was able to get to adb shell when in Recovery, so I went ahead and upgraded to the humancyborg release. I don't know what the issue was before, but maybe it had something to do with 2.1V1? Anyway, I can now get to adb shell WITHOUT being in Recovery with the humancyborg release... so problem solved.

I never had trouble getting to adb shell with greeks v1, but when doig most format commands you would want to be in recovery anyway I think. Either way glad you got it worked out, I enjoy seeing more and more people use 2.1, it really is a much better build then 2.0.1 IMO.

I just did the fix to put back in the programming menu into humancyborg's ROM.

Turns out the setting was already set to EVRC-B, so you don't really need to put it back in (unless you want 13K for some reason, but I think the difference between EVRC-B and 13K are negligible).

I also had a couple of random reboots last night (once while it was in my pocket, the other while I was listening to music with A2DP bluetooth stereo), but none after that.

I still believe humancyborg's rom to be the best 2.1 available, and much better than 2.0.1 feature/function wise. As for stability, well, it's getting there.

This may be a stupid question (I'd rather no one pointed it out if it is), but have any of the aforesaid releases fixed the Nexus live wallpaper?

...this is really the only reason why I would consider switching to a different 2.1 rom than the one I'm currently running.

Late last night I installed Greeks ROM. LOTS of force closes and/or reboots. :( Reinstalled it this morning ... haven't had a reboot yet. Seems pretty cool. Not as fast as I thought it was going to be. Me is starting to think I'm running too many apps. :D

Something odd though ... before I reinstalled earlier, Home++ was running much smoother than Launcher. What's up with that??? Seemed like Launcher was what was causing the reboots. I dunno. Seems a LOT better today after the reinstall.

OK ... since I can't leave well-enough alone. I'm going to install humancyborg's release. What the heck? :D

I'll be back...

I have been running humancyborg's ROM for 2 days and no major issues. the live wallpaper seems to be a bit more stable than greeks rom.

the only think i dont like about humancyborg's ROM is its missing the corporate calander. does anyone happen to have a fix for this?

For me, greeks rom was more stable. With the humancyborg release, every time I hit the app menu button, the phone reboots. I reverted to the greek release this morning.

Wow! My experience is the exact opposite. I've been playing with humancyborg's ROM for a couple hours now ... I like it.

Am I the only one in existence that doesn't want them to "fix" the "bug" with the phone unlocking when you slide the keyboard out? For me, it takes one step out of the process of doing anything. Besides, let's face it... are you really at risk of accidentally sliding your keyboard out when your phone is in your pocket?

I would think this is how it should be. After all if you are sliding your keyboard open the OS is going to assume you are going to use the phone for something and unlocking after you open the keyboard is just another step.

If it

One nice perk of 2.1 -at least the Greek version-is that Maps finally turns GPS on automaticallywhen you start navigation. Nice!

Yep, I'm having an issue with GPS on the humancyborg release. I use Google Latitude, and when I open the Maps app, it's having a difficult time getting GPS lock. It's also not updating location based on cell tower. Weather Widgets is also not updating my location. Is anyone else having an issue with this... didn't have this problem with Greek's 2.1V1.

For the people having issues with humancyborg Rom and GPS. Did you do a factory reset on the device and then complete the initial setup? If i recall correctly he did not have GPS turned on by default.
