The 'First Impressions' Thread :)

ahhh I love this phone. I am coming form the Droid OCed and everything, and the X screams its so fast. But I do have a couple small issues. 1. Pinch to zoom in gallery sucks. 2. I just wish screen transitions were smoother, but they are good enough.

Besides those 2 minor issues I havent had any complaints yet. I love the Moto widgets, they arent as pretty as sense, but they work fantastically, and I love the resize option.

First thoughts:

- Beautiful device and very comfortable to hold

- It feels very solid and high-quality, yet is also quite lightweight

- I really like having hardware buttons again. Much less frustrating than the touch ones

- The keyboard is SO easy to use in landscape mode. I think even hardware keyboard lovers won't miss it on this phone

- Call quality is excellent and the speakerphone is LOUD (Almost TOO loud at full volume)

- As someone said, the unlock screen has a strange lag, and the scrolling on the app menu also seems a little stutter-y. Nothing too bothersome, but it's just strange since everything else is so buttery-smooth

- The web browser is fantastic both on 3G and wi-fi. I'm comparing it to Opera right now and they both seem very similar

- Multitasking is so fast and painless! This is the first phone that makes me feel like I'm using a computer as opposed to a phone.

- Moto's "skin" on android is easy to use and practical, but I find it to be a bit uglier than either Sense or stock android. A lot of the widgets are just white space, and I don't like how you can't scroll through the updates social networking widgets. I've already downloaded better apps for Facebook and Twitter.

That's all I got so far. Haven't played much yet with the camera, but I'm looking forward to it. No regrets at all here!

Very nice indeed. The screen is very clear and it's super fast. HOWEVER, I had the HTC Incredible for a few months and I've been spoiled by how smart that phone is. This "not-motoblur" is dumber than the HTC Sense. Other than that, it rocks.

Scratch that, my favorite feature is being able to get a signal in my house!!!! :D

Just tested every room pretty much and all is well :)

Compare that to sprint's signal-only-by-a-window calling plan.

Sounds exactly like my Samsung u740 and Omnia experience on Verizon. My case, it was the window in the den in a 1 bedroom apt. I had to stand right next to the window.

If I sat down or laid on the floor...... breaking up....breaking up.....no service.

Sometimes its the phone too.

The battery that is. Got the phone at 11:30am, showed about 80% or so charge and used the HELL out of it. Not almost 4pm and it shut down due to dead battery. Not bad for a new phone.

Agree with you on all points. I am seeing the same (minor) lag on the app tray and the unlock screen. Not a big deal at all. it is weird though, those are the only things on the phone I'm noticing a lag on. Everything else is super fast. The odd thing is I don't recall these issues on the demo model I tried out last week. I wonder if it's one of my apps. I did install atk and it could be messing with something. Or maybe it's the new firmware update.

I returned my EVO just a little bit ago to Best Buy (btw, they had zero accessories and only got 2 X's in) and it was kind of sad. The EVO is a great phone. I'm gonna miss the sense UI. But I'd say most everything else about the X is as good or better. I'm definitely not going to miss Sprint though!!

I can't get over how 'thin' the phone feels! When I gave the verizon guy my evo to copy stuff from, he was like man this thing is a brick:o

I love the car dock!! I pop it in there and chose my custom app to be gmail so I can have my inbox on the phone, very cool.

The phone - the sound is extremely clear (and nice and loud) on my end - like I'm on a landline. Honestly probably better than any other cell phone I've used. However, my wife said that she thought I had her on speakerphone though when I was talking to her. I asked her if it sounded bad and she said no it sounds good, just sounded strange. I was in the car with the A/C blasting though, so I'll have to try it some more.

I'm gonna play around some more! Next up is more apps, make some ringtones and install pdanet :)

What other device did you have? I have tested the Inc and X and they have the same signal. Both ranged -71dBm to -98dBm in the areas tested and were plus or minus 1 to 2 dBm from each other.

I had a iphone 3G (at&t) and then an EVO (sprint).

Iphone had a pretty decent wifi signal throughout the house, the EVO did not at all.

The iphone got a signal in pretty much every room, but it did drop calls like crazy, especially if I was talking to other At&T people! The EVO got literally no signal, just an X where the bars should be unless I was right by a window. If it matters, my house is 4200 sq ft.

The X is getting a very good wifi signal and service in all rooms. Happy so far about that especially since I don't have a landline!

I....LOVE....this phone!! SO AWESOME!!! The keyboard is so great!!! I honestly don't know which one I like more...the stock keyboard or the Swype one...it's so fantastic!! First impression...this is the greatest phone ever made.

I haven't been able to figure out how to use swype yet... I feel like I'm having several blonde moments today! :o

I am a big buy, but when I saw the droid x, it looked way smaller than I thought it would. holding it my hands is pure joy. The build quality is great and the buttons on it all feel sturdy, so I am not sure what others are complaining about. I called a couple of my family members and the sound quality was great. It had much less crackling than my droid did.

Something really interesting to me is their Microsoft Exchange application. It works very very well and when you download attachments it has some cool animations. For the first time I found a exchange app so good that I decided to uninstall my dataviz roadsync app.

I am still playing with it, but overall I am very very pleased and i have had a bunch of phones (24 to date).

Love the phone so far, learning the new features.. Not everything is the same as the droid, which in my mind once you have a button lay out stick with it... My biggest complaint.. The speaker I'd way to quiet,i can't hear it tying from my hip and speaker phone is quiet to..my droid was awesome, but this is not good at all.. And I see, some people say its to loud, so I wonder what's up with mine

My EVO works all over my house (3 floors) and my router is in the basement.

you must live in a small house. My friends HTC phones all have weak wifi radios and have issues connecting. My old htc touch pro also had issues. HTc uses low quality wifi radios, among other cut corners.

Anyone know if the update to 2.2 will help the lag issues and what not?

I am not having any lag issues im sure 2.2 will fix it though as it is supposed to increase speed and other things along with it. We will have to wait and see though when the update comes out. I def love this phone though. It feels great in hand and doesnt feel as big as it is. Love the huge screen

I haven't been able to figure out how to use swype yet... I feel like I'm having several blonde moments today! :o

Go to like a text message, and press/hold on the text input box...should pop up with a "text input" option...then hit swype!

Hate to disagree but definately not the case. I have had the HTC hero, and now the EVO and get full bar WIFI everywhere in my house and outside my house as well. Haven't tried leaving the yard, but I do know I pick up my neighbors signal cause i get notifications of networks available.

The only problem I have had so far is the camera, I took one picture worked great. Exited the camera, went back in later pressed the camera button and nothing, tried for about five minutes. Tried video hit the camera button worked great, went back into pictures and I was able to take a pic again.

I am confused on why it wasn't working, but just glad it does now. Hopefully it was just an isolated issue. Besides that one thing, phone has been awesome.

Well atleast you aren't like the one guy who posted his shutted froze after the first pic, now he can't do anything cause its just stuck down.

Went to verizon during lunch. They had one device on display. Great form factor but I did see the lag compared to my incredible. Will not be an issue for people who have nothing to compare to.

I attempted to put a widget on the home screen and it failed several times. I had to swipe through a few screen and then go back to the home screen for it to work.

Screen is awesome! Like the feel but the buttons didn't do it for me. Just my personal feeling.

If you go the phone enjoy!

I'm very pleased with my X so far. I have yet to use the camera and camcorder. I will in a bit.
The only problem I've had is a little lag with my voicemail. I hope it gets fixed.
Is their anyway to turn Mobile 3g off?

What have people been saying when you showed them your Droid X?

I was in Wal-Mart today walking around with the Droid X in my hand. A T-Mobile rep walked by me. Their's a T-Mobile store across from this Wal-Mart. He saw that I had the X and was like "Is that the Droid X?" I replied "yes" and showed him it. He asked if I had played with it any and told him no since I just got it. He said "that's a nice phone."

I also love the phone keypad and the dialer. Extremely easy to use. Also like how you can specify when (or always) to have the keypad show up during a call. Very cool! One thing about the Evo, actually 2 that irked me was 1) couldn't figure out how to make a 3 way call while in another call (I know it's probably easy, but I gave up and said I'll call the person back) and 2) when the dialer was active, you saw the recent calls above the keypad. When you scrolled to look at those it would start dialing them. Not sure if there was a way to disable that, but it was annoying.

Finally one last thing I noticed - the task bar glows/blinks when you're in a call so you don't mistakenly call someone and not realize it or forget to end a call. I remember seeing it in a review, but it sure is nice.

Love it so far, BUT...

I find that if I grip it such that my tongue is touching both the HDMI and USB ports at the same time I have the phone turned off I get NO SIGNAL! Am I holding it wrong? Anyone else having this problem?

K-

;)
