The 'First Impressions' Thread :)

Love it so far, BUT...

I find that if I grip it such that my tongue is touching both the HDMI and USB ports at the same time I have the phone turned off I get NO SIGNAL! Am I holding it wrong? Anyone else having this problem?

K-

;)

"Don't hold it that way";)

So far I am loving (can you really say that about an inanimate object?) the DX. The phone is fantastic. Clear comm both ways.

I set up all of my contacts on GMAIL as well as my calendars. All synced just fine. Changes also sync nicely in either direction.

Downloaded some apps with more to do.

First smart phone and ... whew ... So much to learn.

Agree with you on all points. I am seeing the same (minor) lag on the app tray and the unlock screen. Not a big deal at all. it is weird though, those are the only things on the phone I'm noticing a lag on. Everything else is super fast. The odd thing is I don't recall these issues on the demo model I tried out last week. I wonder if it's one of my apps. I did install atk and it could be messing with something. Or maybe it's the new firmware update.

I returned my EVO just a little bit ago to Best Buy (btw, they had zero accessories and only got 2 X's in) and it was kind of sad. The EVO is a great phone. I'm gonna miss the sense UI. But I'd say most everything else about the X is as good or better. I'm definitely not going to miss Sprint though!!

I can't get over how 'thin' the phone feels! When I gave the verizon guy my evo to copy stuff from, he was like man this thing is a brick:o

I love the car dock!! I pop it in there and chose my custom app to be gmail so I can have my inbox on the phone, very cool.

The phone - the sound is extremely clear (and nice and loud) on my end - like I'm on a landline. Honestly probably better than any other cell phone I've used. However, my wife said that she thought I had her on speakerphone though when I was talking to her. I asked her if it sounded bad and she said no it sounds good, just sounded strange. I was in the car with the A/C blasting though, so I'll have to try it some more.

I'm gonna play around some more! Next up is more apps, make some ringtones and install pdanet :)
Let us know if PDAnet works on the X as VZW had my Incredible blocked when tethered (but it worked flawlessly wireless). I am spoiled by having had the Inc for a few months and will be looking forward to the X tomorrow when it shows up.

very low volume on my droid. and it has made all my facebook contacts in my phone book. how do i remove them? i only want whats on my google sync

Hmm, couldn't you just do a quick factory reset? Start over? Did it on the Inc but can't tell you for sure.

my phone is very much setup. took me all day. i dont really wanna redo my whole phone. its not an issue yet cuz i can just search but im sure it will get annoying

also how do you make custom ringtones for notifications. i seem to only find it with the ringtones

im also trying to find the app that sets all your profiles according to what schedule you set them on

This phone is sooooo light.

And the screen is beautiful. The iPhone can have it's retina display that is very tiny. The Droid X looks fantastic, and is bigger.

Panoramic view is awesome too!

Now, to go play with it...

Congrats to all you new X owners. It looks like a nice setup. I looked at it real hard but decieded to go with the Dinc as it was more for me but that X looks sweet. Ride them hard! :D I have another ATT line up for contract soon. May just get an X for the son. He wanted a Dinc but the more he has played with an X at the store, he is converting. I'll be watching over here to see how they keep up.

This phone is AWESOME! I got it at 9am. I was on a list, but I didn't get there a second too late as they only had 2 left!

Well I can tell you that you will made a great choice in the Incredible, I had one and it was a great phone. I wanted a bigger screen, got one now. The Droid X seems great so far, both are great phones. Nice to have plenty of options now at Verizon, we will have even more when the Fascinate comes out and the Droid 2.

If you want a killer Android phone, Verizon is where it is at.

I kind of feel like waiting for it was more exciting then now when i actually have it in my hands

Screen feels like a tablet compared to my droid. Yet it easily fits into my pocket. Immediately installed launcher pro to get rid of motoblur. No lag at all now.

Hate to disagree but definately not the case. I have had the HTC hero, and now the EVO and get full bar WIFI everywhere in my house and outside my house as well. Haven't tried leaving the yard, but I do know I pick up my neighbors signal cause i get notifications of networks available.

you must have some magical equipment. i would hold on to it ;)

lol, nah its probably something in the custom ROM im running. Its optimized like crazy so im not sure. I rooted soon as i got it so not sure how the wifi was working intially, but i had no issues with my hero either.

I love it, I just dont know how to add all of my accounts without the contacts from my twitter account and facebook account bombarding my phonebook ugh and i cant link up my friends twitters to their contact :(

First, I post regularly on Android blogs, and I love Android...would never own an iAnything based on marketing alone.

So with that said, I love the Droid X...the screen is phenomenal...but here are some weird and sort of unplanned (by Motorola) software issues (f#1 is not good)

1)I made sure all of my contacts were in the Droid from my other phone, and then about 3 hours later, I was going to send a text and guess what? I have about 15-20 people in there whom I did not freaking know; "Grandma Lois"?!?? LULZ

My supervisor has a droid, and he uses both wifi at work (I was not connected to it at the time), and push notifications. I didn't get a chance to ask him if he has a Grandma Lois before he left :( Anyways, WTF?? I had to delete them all.

Minor
2)I installed Handcent (SMS) 3rd party but best in the market; you can customize it all day long. I tried to save a pic on my phone as the SMS background image. Well, the phone makes you crop it, and when you click save, it changes the wallpaper on your PHONE, not the SMS app, lol

3)I tried setting an alarm on the phone, and when I clicked one of my MP3s, I already had my music player going, so I pulled the dropdown at the top of the phone to stop the song playing via music player. Wellllll, when I tried to get back to the MP3 playing through the alarm tone selector, there was no way for me to TURN IT OFF...lol, geez. I had to reboot the phone. Volume control didn't even work on it.

4)Holy crap, has anyone else looked at what application services are running in the background even if you aren't using them? there are at least 4-5 that I will not use, but I think they are causing application lagging (for instance opening up an app, while playing Slacker).

5)External speaker is not very loud :( but you can customize the sound

#1 and #4 are big deals to me, but *I STILL LOVE THE PHONE* and I'll hang out until they're corrected or explained just like I did with the Droid.

Also:

The camera is WAY better than I thought it was going to be, esp compared to the original Droid. I
f you don't like Moto's widgets, you can just remove them.
Voice quality on both ends is much better than the Incredible, which doesn't have noise cancellation (sucks walking outside on even a slightly windy day). I had one person tell me I sounded as if I was standing right next to her.

(try the SLow motion/Fast motion setting on the 720p video...HILARIOUS!:)

The wrong phone is named "Incredible." If Maximus Decimus Meridius carried a cell phone, it would be the Droid X. That's how awesome this phone is...a phone fit for a bad@ss.

Shazaaam, I just went there.

Had a Droid with 0.4BB OC'd to 1.1GHz. The Droid X is a bit of a disappointment performance wise. The X browser (3G) is significantly slower than my customized Droid. The X has LAG, even with launcher pro. The old Droid is so smooth...like butter. The X, like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.

Nice display, but it's just a scaled up version of the Droid's screen/resolution. So, same amount of info on the screen, just bigger.

Moto has added some cool features like talking caller ID, incoming caller area code, battery/power profiles (kinda like SetCPU profiles, but much simpler). Stuff you could obviously get in the market, but nice to have baked in.

Seeing a lot of stuff about the new phones needing a few days to cache and get up to speed, to to speak. Which makes sense, because i've used multiple demo phones that were all snappy and responsive.

Logic will tell you that the X is going to outperform a Droid..even an overclocked Droid.
