The 'First Impressions' Thread :)

Seeing a lot of stuff about the new phones needing a few days to cache and get up to speed, to to speak. Which makes sense, because i've used multiple demo phones that were all snappy and responsive.

Logic will tell you that the X is going to outperform a Droid..even an overclocked Droid.

Let me put it empirically via Quadrant scores:
Droid: 1481 (OC'd to 1.1GHz)
DroidX: 1195 ("performance" mode)

I suspect X's weaker showing is mostly due to using 2.1 (X) vs 2.2 (droid).

very low volume on my droid. and it has made all my facebook contacts in my phone book. how do i remove them? i only want whats on my google sync

External speaker volume seems very low to me as well compared to the Incredible. If anybody finds a "fix" for this, please let me know. Other than that, phone is rockin.

I played with the Droid X
in the Verizon store i ordered from

the only complaints i have are

It doesnt seem as fast as the incredible(it's not slow by any means) but it just doesnt seem AS FAST

It feels weird in my hand

and i hate the buttons

that said...

I cant wait to get mine tomorrow :)

How well does the Vibrate mode work?... I went from a blackberry to the Eris and it was a big disappointment. I hope the DX has a better functioning mode...

Loving it so far, but sense ui (eris) had a dedicated comma key and you could quickly tap a number or symbol by holding down a letter key which had shaded symbol shown on top of the letter at all times, much easier.

And my earpiece speaker has a loud rattle when the volume is halfway up or more :-( don't want to deal with returning it already for that issue, i'll have to see how it goes tomorrow...

my phone is very much setup. took me all day. i dont really wanna redo my whole phone. its not an issue yet cuz i can just search but im sure it will get annoying

also how do you make custom ringtones for notifications. i seem to only find it with the ringtones

im also trying to find the app that sets all your profiles according to what schedule you set them on
Totally understand. Come to think of it I only did that when I sold my Inc 2 weeks ago on Craigslist for $400. Judging by the way these X's are already selling on Ebay for $600 and up, sounds like it's a better investment than gold right now. There are so many apps on the Android Market right now I can only suggest AppBrain (http://www.appbrain.com/) to help sort out the market. They have the sync installs and uninstalls using their native Android app. Good luck.

I have the exact same impressions.
The only difference is that I will be returning mine today

I noticed the X's speed in the store yesterday as well. I don't place a lot of decisions on that because I also noticed in the past when I would have my Inc in the same store it was not nearly as fast as when I was at home. I happen to live 2 blocks from a Verizon tower and would get blazing fast speeds with the Inc on 3G. Will be curious to run the same tests on Speedtest.net when I get my X today.

Got to use the hdmi charging station overnight for use as my alarm clock. I thought I would give the stock alarm app a try. On my evo I used to use gentle alarm so I could get a custom song to wake up to.

To my surprise the X's alarm does everything I needed the gentle alarm for - shows a clock, offers night mode, and allows you to choose a ringtone or mp3 to wake up to, fade in volume and even offers a backup alarm in case you don't wake up - and it looks better! So it's a much better stock alarm than the HTC's.

Okay well that sucks for you :)

I think in time i will get use to the buttons

I literally played with the phone for two minutes and it is a store demo
so i won't judge the speed too much.....

Overall, I am in lust at first sight with the phone and it is the first time
i actually played with a phone BEFORE i brought it

Loving the Droid X so far, beautiful screen, very responsive, MotoBlur is totally ignorable.

A few questions:

Mine is running very warm, after about ten minutes of use. I can get the temperature to normalize if I open Advanced Task Killer (ATK) and kill the tasks I don't need, but that doesn't totally resolve the problem, and the heat, while not burning, is pretty bad and localized to the lower left hand corner of the device (no joke, promise). Anyone else having this issue? Did I just get a bum unit?

Also, when I open ATK, it's common that I'll see Amazon MP3, Skype, and other applications running, applications that I've NEVER once opened on my own. ATK kills them, but sometimes they come back. What gives? Is that a MotoBlur issue or an Android 2.1 problem? Anyone else seeing applications running they didn't ask for?

Overall, a lovely device, wouldn't go back to the iSore if you paid me.

Startup auditor should be able to keep those killed. Just be sure on ATK or startup auditor you're not killing a system service!

More thoughts - the music player - I like it much more than the EVO's music player. It's not as good (read: as pretty) as the iphone, but it is more functional for me to use when working out. I like how it stays on the songs page so I can quickly change songs without hitting the back button to get back to the index of songs.

However, the sound has way too much boomy bass. I played with the media equalizer, but that didn't seem to make much of difference. Maybe new earbuds will help...?

Another thing I really like, coming from the evo, is the wight of it on my waist. If I jogged on the treadmill with the evo on my waist I felt like it was going to go flying because it was heavy, so I had to hold it. With the X, I barely even feel it on my waist and it seems much more secure.

I went with my g/f to go check out 3 phones yesterday (Droid X, HTC Evo and Samsung Vibrant) to do a fair comparison while still having the user experience fresh in my mind. For the most part, the X and Evo were the two phones that were in the running for me. But that changed once I saw a video review of the Vibrant and decided it was worth a shot, what's there to lose.

The Vibrant surprised me, it is an amazing device. No lag whatsoever. It scrolled and opened apps flawlessly. It also felt really good in the hand. But the clear allure to the Vibrant is its screen. This screen blew me away, especially when I watched Avatar on it. The movie just looked exceptional. I will even dare to say it looked better than in the theater. Anyways, this variant of the phone isn't in the running but if the Epic and Fascinate have a similar experience, this phone is a winner.

After we saw the Vibrant, we went to go check out the Evo. The Evo is a solid phone that is definitely in the top running. I won't go far into this since I have played with the phone before, and not too much has changed of my opinion about it. The small touch input lag didn't bother me but if I decide to get it, root is in its future without a doubt to hopefully enhance the experience.

Now to the X, I was really looking forward to the release of it and expecting to really like it. But to be blunt, I was exceptionally underwhelmed. The screen was nice but it wasn't much better than the Evos. Don't get me wrong, the screen is nice but nothing to gloat about it except for its 4.3 inches of goodness. The motoblur UI bored me as well as I didn't find it all too interesting or exciting. The widgets are just bland. I was really hoping that the speed of the phone would lift up my spirits but I was sad to see that it wasn't anything special. I was hoping for very quick scrolling, similar to the Incredible but that wasn't the case with my first impression. To round it out and I know i'm being kinda harsh but these were my first impressions, it just did not do it for me. I was very disappointed to say the least.

Maybe i'll try it out again and give it another chance, who knows.

OK well my first 5 mins is simply awesome...coming from a D1 back to a curve then to a ARIA then back to a BB8703e(my goodness talk about brick)..and even a iphone3g(for only a day hated the os after being use to android os)

Size..not an issue at all...see 8703e the dx feels so great compaired...I am 6'4 258 lbs. My wife is 5'4 120 and is use to a BB tour and this phone fits her well... so size really don't matter;)

Physical keys IMHO are simply GREAT they look good IMO and function very well. I was constantly hitting the searck button on the aria and incredible when I didnt want too. SO coming from months of using the D1 and 3 weeks now with the htc aria and playing with the incredible in store The buttons are very welcome.

speaker sounds just great to me...pandora going as I set here... Blows the HTC aria out of the water and as memory serves sounds as or almost as good as the D1 i had did. plenty loud and clear...really blows the aria out of the water here

screen response seems very good to me on lag issues here...the only lag is the slide to unlock and I kinda like that...may keep me from pocket calling anyone...did happen a time or two with the d1 with the lock button pressed before going into my pocket

pocket fit ...just fine like the weight compared to the d1 and BB devices I have used in the past year.

hump on back no issue no where near as bad as in the photos and fits my finger just fine..great design if you ask me

camera not interested in...sorry I use dsl's with very high quality lenses this dinky camera would never impress me so I wont give any thoughts. I am sure for those spur of the minute shots I may anap of my sons it will be just fine...the video camera I will play with but way later

Favorite thing as I set here looking at the screens as they are set up the third page to the right has a news release of steve jobs holding up the iphone it says Apple to discuss iphone4 antenna.. I really LOL'd at it for some reason as my x is on the desk and i just can swipe my finger across it and press anything without having to pick it up to ground it...LOL

EDIT***** only dislike on first round that will be a pain is the sd card removal...I hate having to take the battery out to change sd cards..I dont do it often, but come on. They have it on top why didn't they just put a spring loaded slide pop up applicator there of some sort ... no real biggie

well time to start playing

those are my real initial thoughts

will they change...

time will tell

but I KNOW this is the BEST opening thoughts of any phone I have played with..or used in a very long while

Sweet phone!

Great screen and case, very quick, and yes there is a definite upgrade in call quality and wi-fi capability. Loving it!

My phone is being dumb. The touch screen becomes unresponsive alot so i have to turn screen off/on a few times, it keeps freezing. Also, the touch screen goes out of wack, it just clicks on whatever it wants when it wants too. and the market isn't being that reliable either. Hopefully this goes away.

My phone is acting absolutely perfect, I feel quite lucky. This phone is insanely nice, now to figure out how to remove facebook from indexing contacts, and some other nice features ;)

I had a iphone 3G (at&t) and then an EVO (sprint).

Iphone had a pretty decent wifi signal throughout the house, the EVO did not at all.

The iphone got a signal in pretty much every room, but it did drop calls like crazy, especially if I was talking to other At&T people! The EVO got literally no signal, just an X where the bars should be unless I was right by a window. If it matters, my house is 4200 sq ft.

The X is getting a very good wifi signal and service in all rooms. Happy so far about that especially since I don't have a landline!

I'm in the same boat as you. Had an iPhone 3G. Hated the crappy service and dropped calls. Switched to Sprint last week for the Evo. Great reception everywhere except at home, where I have to stand by a window. Sprint won't send me an airrave to fix this. I love the Evo, but w/o a landline, I need a phone that works. Going to look at a Droid X in person after work.

I can't even explain how amazing this phone is. I've used most of the new phones (IP3/IP4/etc) and this is such a treat. My main business phone was a blackberry tour, and I was able to synch all emails up, and getting instnat notifications which is critical to my business. I could not be happier with this phone at the moment, and this is with the stock launcher (only appearant lag is unlocking, which is no big deal). The browser is very fast, the phone quality is sooo much better...wow..just wow.

My X showed up about an hour ago. I ravaged the package and soon as it was in my hands, and haven't stopped touching it since it was first activated! Seriously, I can't believe I put up with the Storm as long as I did. I love me some Android!

I never was able to mess with a demo unit before my purchase, and I was a bit fearful that the device was going to be TOO large, but the size, feel, weight, and overall build quality are absolutely fantastic. To be honest, I lost faith in Motorola awhile ago (particularly when their hit the Razr showed up) but I can honestly say my faith is renewed with these masters of smartphone technology.

I honestly don't see how one can checkout every feature this phone has in a 24 hour period. It's going to take me at least the entire weekend to see what this phone is capable of, but as it stands right now, I am absolutely in love with this device.
