Just wait for someone to post the Update.zip file and upgrade it that way. That's how the professionals/incredibly impatient do it!

if you download from the zip file will that harm our phones in anyway when the update DOES come through? Sorry if my question is dumb but I am new to android and know very little about phones and such lol

I got the update notification when I woke up today, but when I hit "update now" it took me to a blank screen and nothing happened. I waited and waited and nothing. I reset my phone and it took me to a safe mode recover where I reeboot regularly, and now I don't have the update and I don't get the notification anymore. Going to System Updates -> Update Android gives me the same "your system is currently up to date" message that it always has.
Of course. Was I to expect any different from VM?
:(

No. It won't try to update it twice if that's your concern.

You guys will love it! Angry Birds, Tank Hero, Google Goggles are running like a charm :)

I would wait for the official prompt though. Too risky playing with zip files at this late stage...

i got the text message on the 8th so hopefully i will get it tonight...my phone is extremely laggy so im hoping this fixes that issue

I just got it as well
Android 2.2.2

It was roughly 1am EST. Took 10 minutes total.
Didnt have to reinstall any apps. Took my memo app, which I liked.
I dont like to new bar at the top. The App store does NOT look any better.
Dont like the fade in on the launcher to get to my apps.
I LOVE having more home screen space. Dont want an app for that.
I like the new Where app.
I havent dropped and data signal. I would usually surf then, BAM, no data.Hasnt happened yet (knock on wood).
It is snappier IMO
I cant find the option to install to SD. I wanna remove ALOT of apps to put them back on the sd card but cant find the options.

Overall I am a happy camper....so far

Android version 2.2.2
Baseband version S:M910.05 S.EC07
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Build number FROYO.EC07
Hardware version M910.05
I have an Evo, but I just got my wife an Intercept. I use an app called SDMove to find moveable apps and then move them to SD. Also, if you're rooted and have Titanium Backup, you can move many more apps to SD as well.

UPDATE: I spoke to a VM tech representative over the phone, and she essentially told me that all hope was lost. According to her, I won't be able to update. If that's the case, I'm switching carriers.
However, I don't trust her. Does anyone know how I can get the update pushed to me again? Or if doing a factory reset will let me get the update? Otherwise, someone please post the Update.zip file so that I can do it myself.
OR if not, is she right? I'm so confused/frustrated/furious/about to explode that it hurts, please help.

Just be patient for the update.zip file. The reason this isn't as readily available as an update for the Nexus One or the EVO is that the Intercept isn't exactly a "power user" phone, and the vast majority of people won't think to install the logger program so they can get the file server information hosting the file and being able to download it and post it via a filesharing service.

To everyone, I'm willing to bet that this will be available by the end of the work week in a zip file. Just be patient. You've lived with 2.1 for x amount of days. Waiting until the end of the week won't kill you. Be glad that you even ARE getting a vanilla Froyo update. Many phones won't even get FroYo or have to rely on cooked Roms from CM or other sources.

Not to sound like a Negative Nancy here, but I think people need to cool off a little here. Don't barrage Virgin Mobile with requests for the update because the CSR's don't know and more importantly, don't care. As Tom Petty said, waiting is the hardest part.

Same problem here, cannot use "System update" menu to update either. This sucks

Ok, so I just reset my phone to factory default from Privacy menu on phone.

and now just got notification of the update, it's trying to install again...

Heeeey !! it worked that time.

of course I had to wipe all installed apps, but I don't care, got'em from the market anyway.

Good luck everyone else. I'm off to play with froyo

the "system update" pop up message thing was waiting for me when i woke up :)
Took not even 5 minutes I don't think. I LOVE the new lock screen. The only thing I don't care for is the addition of two new apps you can't get rid of "where" and "news & weather"...BUT the ability of moving apps to the SD card so makes up for it's extra crap. I moved all of em over that I could and redownloaded AB Rio & Fruit Ninja (these were huge apps before that slowed my phone down) over to the SD card and every thing is running smoothly :D
I also love the new look of the messaging!!

YAY!

How do you re-download a program you purchased once? I had bought Fruit Ninja, but installed it and when I go to install it, it wants to charge me.

The update hasn't reached me yet, but for all the people whos OTA update failed, the system should start seeing the update in a week or so. You will be able to update it manually after all the other updates for everyone else have been distributed. It may take a while because they are staggering the OTA updates so they don't crash the servers... Then no one will have the update.

just got my update and it failed

Everyone that errors when they go to update, it looks like you're out of space where the installer tries to unzip the update. /cache/ is internal memory on the phone, right?

So before you do the update take some time and delete the bigger apps you got from the Market. You can get them right back for free after the update. (They'll say Purchased on them instead of Buy or whatever. The one guy that's getting double charged, I don't know what to tell ya.)

The lack of free space on the internal memory is what's causing your error. That's why resetting the phone to factory default fixes it. It opens up the space you need.

Now as far as the people that can't get another update after the first one crashes... check out your sd card because I have a feeling you have the update.zip there. I'm new to this but it would make sense to me that if we're able to install updates from the sd card manually, maybe that's where the automated update stores the update.zip before it unzips it. Considering all the more space we have available internally... I would say that's probably the only way it can work.

If you find the update.zip in the root of your sd card then you know the simple way to run the update again (after you clean out the apps taking up space), right? I found it on this forum somewhere. Turn your phone off. Hold down Volume Down and the Green Send key as you press the Red Power / End key. Once you see Samsung you can let go.

That'll take you to a screen where you can select to update from the update.zip on the sd card. From there it should work this time.

btw no txt from VM yet and no update. been a customer since nov. intercept owner since dec.

this is pretty lousy. why can't this just update across the data connection from a samsung server or google server that's too bulletproof and well-funded to even be close to crashing? 5000 a day... terrible.

We're updating android... so the part that updates should come from google, right? And if we have drivers that need to play nice with 2.2 then they download from samsung. and if vm wants to add more bloatware they just pile it on top after the other two are upgraded. right? kind of like windows on an hp with bloatware norton on top of it. get rid of norton, and get the important updates from ms and hp.

does upgrading somehow become that much harder because it's a phone and not a pc? why is VM in charge of this? they're just a data connection in my eyes. it's not like they have any customer service capabilities to speak of. so why even pretend? this stuff should work correctly from samsung... or I call the hardware manufacturer

So I received my update at 5pm central time on april 12th and I'm not very impressed because my phone semems sluggish due to the fact z4root no longer works with means my root tweaks aren't working. Will edit when I make it to a pc.

edit - The update has some good and bad points so far. First of all I haven't been able to root this thing yet (z4root just hangs) but my easytether is working fine which I'll still have to buy a better cable because I can't rely on it recognizing my cable every time. The install froze on installing phone modem twice and I had to remove the battery. If you'd like to watch the progress during install just press the home key at the loading screen.

Other than that, my phone just says virign mobile instead of all the notification icons that turned on silent, vibrate, wifi etc. Is there another way to access that button menu that I'm not familiar with in 2.2?

Also the phone just seems slower, there's a new bloat app I didn't ask for that is uninstallable (with no root) and the response time for typing in the default browser crawls. I'm sure if I can get it rooted I can wipe most of this lameness out. I do like that you can now move apps to the sd card. And finally I've noticed that the messaging color screen and notification bar changed. All in all, I should have waited but the message popped up and I compulsively pressed it. I'll just have to check some things out.

do you have any idea how much internal memory you need to install the update?

I just uninstalled a bunch of apps so I should be good.

internal memory: 109mb sd card: 7.34gb

JuanCharlie,

I have an intercept with the Sprint DF27 baseband with inxanes' recovery. I had Sprint 2.2 version on my phone but went back to VM 2.1 to get the official install from VM.

I am able to get the phone to download the update after I do a factory default reset. But the phone does not appear to be saving the update.zip to the SD card since I do not see the file there. BTW: update still fails with same cache error.

Any ideas.

Thanks!

If I save all my programs to the SD card using file expert, shouldn't I be able to reinstall them from there?
Anyone know how I would do that?

And as a follow up question, can I save the data so I do not have to restart Angry Birds?
Not without 3rd party tools. The "easiest" way is to just use Titanium Backup, but you need root access to do that. Google around a bit and you may find a tool. I just flashed a new ROM on my phone and I just did TB and it worked flawlessly.

... but my easytether is working fine which I'll still have to buy a better cable because I can't rely on it recognizing my cable every time. ....

I have this issue with easytether too and I don't think it's the cable. Try this,
with easytether running,
close the keyboard,
hit end talk button to turn off screen,
then plug in the cable.

this works every time for me to get the usb and debug icons. HTH
