The Long Awaited AT&T Froyo Update Fallout

I bought my Captivate the very day they were released.

In an unbelievable twist of fate, I got one with NO problems. I really didn't think much of it, till I read of the various problems on this, and other forums.

I proceeded to optimize it for 2.1 which made it even faster, even though I had no lag or other slow downs. It remained stable and I get really great battery life.

And the point is?

Well, I'm very hesitant to touch it since it's trouble free, and doing all I want to do perfectly.

Yet that said I'm very tempted to go to Froyo 2.2

I've been playing around with it all day since I updated this morning and haven't found any bugs. Everything is smoother and more streamlined. AT&T took forever, but came through for us stock owners.
 
I say do it. Granted, I have to change a few things back to how I had it, but who cares? Anytime you upgrade a computer you have to do a little tweaking for personalization.
 
OK - so we are all well into Day 1 of the long awaited At&T Froyo update.

Here's my take so far - for what its worth.

We have 2 Captivates in our house - my Cappy and my wife's Cappy. I went to Serendipity custom ROM last week on my Cappy - screamin' demon! Froyo 2.2.1.

Tonight, I updated my wife's Captivate to AT&T's stock Froyo - she went from stock, unrooted
 
I bricked my phone.

I didn't pseudo brick it as others around here seem to have..

My phone is seriously gone..

My phone won't turn on at all..

I am hitting up radioshack and bringing .99$ in the morning..

Sucks..

I wish all the bricked people hard or soft the best of luck.

Seems like an easy fix.. hopefully at&t will be willing to replace/swap out any broken phones though.

I would probably opt for an atrix given the opportunity.

*NOTE* I wouldn't opt for atrix because I prefer it over captivate.. its just I would rather an atrix I know is new than a refurb captivate..
 
My phone is definitely hard bricked beyond repair. I had to fight with AT&T to get them to send me a refurbished phone. This is going to keep getting ugly.
 
i've had problems trying to flash custom ROMs on my phone and hearing this scares me a little bit. do you think that if the phone is taken to a local AT&T store, they might be able to update the phone instead of doing it on your own?

I doubt it. They looked at me like I had 5 heads when I told them how 2.2 was out and what happened to my phone. They never heard of Kies either!!
 
I really dislike the idea of getting someone elses used phone..

I know they are suppose to fix it but, I would just be worried that if it was already brought back once.. there is a reason and it is liable to have that same problem again..

oh really? looks like i won't be going then. man, it looks simple enough.. but i just don't trust myself doing that. i might have to find people who are tech savvy.

yeah, that is a possibility.

i think it might be a good option getting a new phone is sooo expensive and it's better than nothing (at least for me).

Save yourself some trouble and just call AT&T via their 1-800 number. It took some explaining but in the end they agreed to mail me another phone where as the AT&T store didn't even want to be bothered with me.
 
I loaded AT&T's Froyo from 2.1 using mini kie without any problem. But, the only thing I can say about AT&T's 2.2 is it offers too little too late. I now want to root the phone and go with any of the custom rom, but have not able to root because of the e3 recovery prompt. If you don't mind, how do you intend to return your wife's back to Serendipity form ATT's Froyo?

There are two theories to this. The first is what you've posted (possibly not fixed properly) and the other is that it receives more personal attention (QA) since it's not going through a mass production line. As with so many things, YMMV, but it's not necessarily negative.
 
I find it pretty amazing that custom ROMs from 2 months ago are far superior to this "official froyo" when it comes to user experience. For the amount of time captivate owners waited for froyo, I was expecting better. The "official" is very laggy, even with simple tasks, and the browser experience is not good at all. I really don't get it, because the out of the box froyo on my Inspire puts the captivate "official" froyo to shame.

All in all, I am glad I tried it, but I am now convinced custom ROMs are the only way to go with the Captivate.

I've been using a custom ROM since December 19th because I completely lost faith in Samsung. If any of my "friends" here are wondering which ROM to flash after experiencing disappointment with Samsung's Froyo, I whole-heartedly recommend Serendipity. Others have tried different ROM flavors, only to end up with Serendipity as their ROM of choice. Stable, fast, and fully-supported.
 
I will actually disagree with my fellow posters: don't.

With my experience using different custom ROMs, I would upgrade just to have the latest & most up-to-date. Then, from time to time, I would have strange issues, battery life problems, etc.

Now I use an old version of a ROM that gets updated frequently (there have been 12 updates of my ROM after my version). Why? Because it's suprememely stable and sips battery at an almost alarming rate. I have it set up perfectly to work for me. Previous upgrades left me wanting more, so I just keep it with what works.

I've heard that one click root still works after the 2.2 upgrade...have you tried it?

Edit: On the other hand, you don't really have to root to install a custom rom such as serendipity
 
If it ain't broke,...

If you like the way your phone works, and it does everything you need it to, why change? My main reason for upgrading was better Exchange support. Other than that, I haven't found anything that makes it a "must do".

My son asked me the same question last night. I let him play with my phone for a while and he didn't find anything to make him want the upgrade. He loves his phone just the way it is. Of course now that I've said that, he'll come home from class today and want to do it.
