I picked up a D2 today. I have been waiting for my NE2 date in Oct to enjoy the $50 discount. I have been reading the forums and going by my local store to play with DInc, DX and D2 since they came out. My intention was to wait tll Oct, see what else came out and make a decision then. My daughters both have had Eris's since February, so I do have a basis of comparison since I keep those running well.
Unfortunately, my old warhorse bb storm1, running the latest hybridOS from lyricidal, has stopped functioning to the point of barely at all. I squeezed all I could out of that sucker. I really had no issues with it till lately.
So, I decided to go ahead and try the D2 to check out the keyboard, swype and such. I have 30 days to decide to keep it or swap for a DInc , DX or whatever might come out (Fascinate? Probably not within 30 days, not a samsung fan anyway).
Bonifides aside, The D2 is much nicer than I was expecting. The size is very good, screen is very good and it is fast as heck. Much faster than the store demo model. There is very little lag. Sound is good from the earpiece and speaker, and through my Plantronics Voyager Pro BT ear piece. It "Does" everything advertised and more, so far.
Most importantly, call quality is superb and it holds a signal and call better than any phone I have ever had. Well my old Moto w385 was the best at holding onto a call until now. In my daylight basement, the further I go back to the underground part, the worst the call quality becomes. The calls are usually dropped when I get about halfway back. The D2 held calls in every part of my basement, even in the rest room, which is in the deepest part of the basement. This is a test I have done with many phones over the years, and this D2 has beat them all. That is just what I was hoping, going back to a Moto phone. There is Corp of Engineer land behind me and lack of towers back there has always been a problem with no solution. My daughters Eris's will hardly hold a call in the basement at all. Dont know how the DInc would do. I assume the DX would also do well. It is Moto, after all.
The keyboard is good and works well, though the top row crowds the screen frame. I just slide my fingers up to the frame and I know I am at the top row of buttons. The screen landscape keyboard is roomy and easy to use. Even the portrait keyboard functions pretty well. Swype is great, even with MUCH practice to do. I see using it a lot.
The UI doesnt bother me at all, although I do like Sense on the HTC's. I have my stuff arranged like I like it on the home page and may try out LPP at some point.
I have been a google and gmail user since the lab and invitation days. All that is superb, as well.
So far I really like the D2. We will see how the battery does and make a decision in 28 days, or so. I can actually imagine that this one might work out. Again, we shall see. VZW will sell lots of these to new smart phone and vzw customers. Especially those that might be suspicious of screen only kb's.
