Mods The root club [Root only]

I've tried to understand... I really have. But I just can't grasp the alure of rooting. I've taken the plunge and encountered nothing but problems. I was always able to overcome them but there was always another one right around the corner. Never found a single benefit that I didn't already have. Seemed to be purely cosmetic to me. And I just don't lear at my phone enough for that to matter all that much. I'm not putting down the Nation of Root but so far I just haven't been able to fit in comfortably. And believe it or not, that bothers me because I have always been a tech nerd. Maybe one day I'll see the light.

For some rooting is a badge of honor, I guess one could say. One is to get the full freedom of the operating system as it is advertised. The other major advantage is, is backing up your system, your games, apps and such.

Other things is for added features. Imagine my surprise when I got my note II and realized the multi window feature was only for select apps, I sold myself on the device on the multi window feature where I could have both a radar image up and twitter, or maps or what not. I found I could not load my radar map (pykl3) because it is not supported, not sure if it every will be either via the dev or samsungs official image, but rooted, I can remedy this issue because some roms allow me to do what I thought I could do in the first place.

Rooting is not for everyone. At one point I was ready to give up on doing so. If the device works the way you want, then there is no need to root. There is PLENTY you can do with an unrooted android device. No shame in staying stock. :)

I'll be the first to admit that the evolution of Android has lessened the need for rooting in several respects (screen captures, disable apps (not all devices, though), etc.).

One root task that I've posted about several times but I don't often hear other's mention is when you are rooted and install a busybox, you have utilities available to you to allow you to poke-around at the command-line level on your device.

I just hate not being able to use a lot of the (very useful) Unix commands (grep, find, tr, etc.) on my Android devices. I.e., it's not all about custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries, overclocking/underclocking, boot animations, etc. for me (although I've done all of those things), but the freedom to poke-around at will.

To me, root = freedom and choice, while respecting the dangers and vulnerabilities that come with it ;) :).

I recently picked up my first nexus device, the nexus 7. I came to Android from the original iPhone, for root. For control. For options. For open source.
I am not savvy with command line, though I can, and have followed plenty of instructions. But the point is not TO use it, but to be ABLE to if I want to.
This experience with a nexus device has been game-changing for me. I was an HTC fanboy until I realized the beauty of true Google. While rooted, my nexus 7 didn't really need it to be almost all I ever wanted.
Now that I'm rooted, running cm10.1 is fun, but what can I do from here?
Rooting my incredible 2 and my Eris were so liberating! Rooting my nexus 7 was a disappointing venture in a way. I can't find anywhere to go worth the time...
At least I'll get the updates all the other Verizon customers want, but will never see.

I am hiding a terrible secret...I am no longer rooted. It is not because I don't want to be, I was given a new device which can be rooted but unfortunately I think I am suffering from that horrible affliction...yes...rootile dysfunction. I am working through some personal issues to try and get through this so I can once again root with confidence so please be patient with me.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of your affliction. :(

If a Panda can help, let me know.

Thank you brother, but it seems I am beyond the Panda and need to seek the "Unclean Masked Rodent"...

Ah.

If your wayward phone has not crossed over into the version of today, salvation may be yet be yours though the attainment of a number that surpasses all others, and you may yet avoid the unclean one.

My resolve has been strong for I have resisted the evil ones temptation into upgrade but I am at a number that totals 1.19.000, share these wonders that may yet avail me brother.

I will have my dance with the devil to gain my token upon which I will make gesture as appointed and will once again enjoy freedom as the weekend is nigh for I dare not attempt such undertakings upon a weekday where I risk my ability to ply my wares.

Once again you have my deepest gratitude my red brother!

Can anyone here tell me that what actually custom rom is? And is it a modified form of the actuall Os from the company or is it totally different?
And if I need to upgrade my phone from gingerbread to jellybean, where can I find the required custom Rom and does that support multi window or not?

A rom is just customised software. It can be based on something official (see Android revolution roms) or based on stock versions to give a AOSP look (like Cyanogenmod)
I made an article about rooting on Android way point if you wanna read that. I'll post a link later.

I guess most of the users here wil know pretty much everything mentioned, but it might be useful for some newer users.
