Root The Ultimate Guide: S-Off, Recovery, Root, & Jelly Bean

Quick question, before I start this...can I use the boot method from the root without overwriting recovery/kernel method thread to accomplish the same thing?

The idea being to boot cwm from the laptop instead of the phone and then flash the rooted rom to the phone? After that is done and the phone is working, caches cleared, phone reset, then I can flash the twrp recovery to the phone afterwards then make a nandroid backup? Will this method work or not?

Also, about the degrading boost signal, could it be due to the prl on the rom that is being flashed? I have prl version 31101 if that makes a difference

As Irishhobo mentioned, the prl will not be affected since it is on a protected partition.

You have the option of changing the prl to one of your choice. There is a thread here that will help you if you decide to go this route.

Here is the link to his thread..

If you are using Win7 64bit, here are the diag drivers that you'll need. It is an installed that I found and is the easiest way to install them.

Hi,

I am unable to install the Universal Naked Drivers. I uninstalled the previous drivers on my laptop w/Windows 7 and proceeded to follow the instructions installing the UND's by right clicking them and then install but I get an error stating that the INF file I selected does not support this method of installation. Can someone help please. Thanks in advance.

As I've stated in several posts.... I never used the naked drivers. I installed HTC Sync. The drivers and Sync are actually separate installs even though they install at the same time. Once the installation is done you can go back and look in your programs. There you will see HTC Sync AND the HTC drivers. Just remove the HTC Sync and you should still be left w/ the drivers. ;):D

Yes I know, I have accomplished what the op and the tut has provided with my phone w/o the UND's but still want them installed as I have multiple Android devices and think it's great to have them functioning on my PC. Thanks anyhow...

Yep. Already left. I have my nexus up and running on metropcs and I couldn't be happier :)

Good luck with your new phone and network dude.

I remember when you and I were one of the first here, along with a handful of others, excited to get our brand new HTC One SV rooted, following the development here and on the XDA thread. :eating::thumbup::five:

Thanks you guys! I do like this phone. I just couldn't deal with the service in my area anymore.

i2f, thanks for the guide.

I guess my question then is for anyone familiar.

Starting with a new SV, JellyBean out of the box.

Given that moonshine is supposed to install root (su binary and superuser.apk) and busybox - is the last step - restoring the stock rooted JellyBean nandroid really necessary??

Edit - or is that to replace the boot.img that moonshine used?

2nd edit - I checked with the #moonshiners - their boot_unsecure.img is used by their tool only, not retained in the image nor a concern for users.

I think then that's unnecessary with a new JellyBean device. :o

Either way, I'll be going for SuperSU and Stericson's busybox (sort of my favorites on both of those).

Thanks! :)

Almost sounds redundant IMO

So I got up to the point of taking the fully stock backup and CWM is choosing to tell me that it "Can't mount backup path" now. I have an 8 GB SD card inserted (freshly formatted I might add) and it won't work.

Might have an idea as I formatted the SD with cfdisk on Linux

EDIT: formatted with the phone now and backup is in progress

EDIT: Got S-off and have SuperSU installed

Thanks for this information. I have one question, though.

I'm not totally new to rooting and rom flashing. I have just enough experience to be able to mess things up BIG TIME. My phone with 2.3.5 has root but still has S-On. I'd like to be able to experiment with a variety of roms but it seems that I need to get S-Off. Is there a way to do this without having to unroot and then re-root?

I had a devil of a time getting rooted in the first place and would hate to do something that might unroot the phone and set me back to a stock unrooted device. The instructions posted here seem pretty clear and foolproof but I'm always leery when things look simple. They often aren't, and I've managed to be enough of a fool to mess up on supposedly "foolproof" instructions.

Thanks.

You mentioned 2.3.5. If that's the version of Android you have, what phone is it? I believe S-Off methods may vary by device and so if you could post back with your device, I can move this somewhere where you will likely receive better assistance

Quick question before I attempt anything. Over on moonshines site the latest file for windows is moonshine_k2_cl_2.06.653.5 I like a dummy went ahead and took the update on friday and my software version is now 2.06.653.6 710RD is this going to be a problem or should I just wait until this gets updated? I like a lot of people seem to be running into the low phone storage problem. I keep uninstalling apps but I keep getting that error. Thank you for any help before I do anything.

The hboot is still identical and so is the kernel. I don't think you will have any issues. As long as you read and follow instructions.

NOTE: THESES ARE MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS AND NOT INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOU TO TRY ANYTHING. IN THE END, THE CHOICE MADE IS ALWAYS YOURS AND YOURS ALONE.

Good luck with your choice.

And if you choose not to try, the only difference of not having S-Off is that you'll have to fastboot flash kernels when changing roms, i.e. from jb to ICS and visa versa (unless you are a developer) or wish to be for this device. And most developing doesn't need soff anyway.

Meaning Rom building and kernel development is still very do-able with out soff

I recently sold my HTC One SV, so I would like to delete whatever files I have for it on my dropbox. Right now, I'm hosting 2 things that are linked in the instructions - the adb/fastboot files and the jelly bean nandroid. If someone could host them elsewhere and give me the link, I'll update the post.

I'm going to keep the files on my dropbox for at least another 24 hours.

Cheers!
