They Didn't Fix The Volum in 2.2

That's funny, because before we did the test, I played sound on mine and we both said 'wow! that's MUCH louder!'. Then we did the side-by-side test and said...'well, maybe it's not'. Unless you are comparing side-by-side, you can't say for sure.

Well I can def tell that my volume is much louder. I didn't do a side by side test, but I know my volume was much lower than it is now. Sounds so much better!

Absoluty louder. My wifes X is still 2.1 and I just did a side by side.

Mine isn't louder. I measured pre and post install with the decibel meter I use in my home theatre, it was identical. I will check again after a factory reset.

Thanks for confirming. Like I said "it seemed louder" until put to a real test. Placebo effect. I really hope the factory reset helps.

Did all the droid x's have volume problems? I mean maybe some of them weren't actually that low to begin with.

this guy wins for most official test. all the rest of you are licking your thumbs and putting them up to the wind....

(*assuming everyone is telling the truth on the interwebz here....)

Well that is what I wanted to avoid, the placebo effect, since one of my biggest complaints was the sound, and I didn't notice any difference with the leaked 2.2. I will check when I get home from work and factory reset. I am hoping it works too.

are you guys speaking on the speaker playing from the back?

Yes, I am lucky I can hear my ringer at all most of the time. If there is noise louder than normal conversation voice, I can't hear it, and I have dang good hearing. I miss calls all the time when driving or if it is in my pocket.

My notifications volume is much louder. Still haven't gotten the first phone call and I refuse to call myself just to see ;)

edit: got a call about 10 minutes later and it seemed louder to me.

I am open to the possibilty of my phone being defective. I do have a new one coming from asurion due to a slightly cracked screen, so I will be sure to check both.

Much louder! I used to miss calls while phone is in the pocket of my jeans; heard it loud and clear this morning with a same volume setting!

Its most definitely louder, I had my phone turned up to the loudest settings and even then had trouble hearing it when it was laying on a table next to me and I had headphones on (only on, nothing playing through the headphones). After 2.2 (the leak for me, not official) I turned all the volumes down and I have have no problem hearing it repeating the same test as above.

Granted its not exactly a scientific test, and I only tested the leaked 2.2, not official, but it most definitely made it easier to hear my phone on even lower settings, which I assume was done by increasing volume in the firmware.

Perhaps not as good a test as many may think. While it is an objective measurement, there are many factors that could affect the levels measured and without knowing more about the process and equipment used this could be an accurate comparison or of minimal relevance.

It should also be noted that overall Sound Pressure Level or SPL (measured as decibels or dB) is not the same thing as perceived loudness (reported as phons or sones). A quick example, if you are measuring peak SPL levels then one could add a peak compressor and 'make up' gain to maintain the same peak level while achieving a higher average level, thus increasing the perceived loudness without affecting the peak SPL levels measured (a trick used in many recordings). One might also apply equalization that affects the perceived loudness without affecting the measured overall SPL level, especially if measuring using weighting filters. Both EQ and compression are fairly simply electronic circuits that may already be integrated in the DX's audio circuitry so it is not a stretch at all to think they may have been tweaked some related firmware or software to increase the perceived loudness without actually affecting the overall SPL measured.

On a more practical basis, I'm not sure all phones had initial volume problems, I got mine later than many and did not seem to have the issues some others have apparently experienced.
