Tip - "HOW DO I" Settings with Android

OK...I have one for you (Android noob). Seems like I don't have a "favorites" widget. Any ideas? Also, I was wondering how to "star" someone. Can't seem to find it in the directions or anywhere else. Thoughts?

Your talking about the favorites? as for as contacts?

Click the + then Widget/people/ choose the style you want then select the group you want to display. If you don't have the group you are looking for you can add them using the computer too in GMAIL on your browser.

Not sure on the stared thing. I know in the browser you can use it. Not sure on the phone.

OK, first Android phone:

1. How do I set the backlight to stay on while on power?

2. Do I have to go thru android market to get new apps?

I'm sure I'll have more! Thanks in advance.

1. Menu>Settings>Sound and Display>Brightness

2. No. Look online for apps also.

Here was the correct response http://androidforums.com/tips-tricks-evo-4g/90404-tip-how-do-i-settings-android.html#post863780:

1. Menu/Settings/Applications/Development/Stay awake. You can check this too keep the phone awake.
OR
Menu/Settings/Sound & Display Then browse for Screen Time Out.

2. You can download apk files and load them to the SD Card and use astro filemanager to install Directly. I would recommend the Market though. You can uninstall from there as well.

Thanks for jumping in though.

Slayer, there is a folder called "starred" when you hit the "+" key. Do you know how to add contacts to that? That was what I was getting at. Sorry for being obtuse, and like everyone else said...thank you for taking the time to help.

AAAhhhhh ok....those would be whoever is listed in your Favorites group. So you can create and add users in the people application.

Open Up People, Select Groups, Select the group you want to add contacts too. You should be able to add contacts from there.:D

1. Wallpaper? = Seems that is not available in this build of 2.1. In others I have used you could. If you or anyone else finds this to not be true let me know. As of right now it seems the same wallpaper for the home screen works for the lock screen as well.

2. Games Folder? = You created the folder on one of your home screens correct? If so make sure your focus is on the home screen with the folder, bring up the all programs window (up arrow in bottom left) and find the game you want to add. Long press on the game and hold. You will see your games folder and home screen. drag the game to the games folder.

DONE

How to you name the folder?
EDit: found it/ Long press on the top of the folder.

Oops. Had my mind set on brightness sorry.

Hmmmm should play to the head set once its plugged in. I just plugged mine in and the music player played to the head phones by default. Maybe make sure they are pushed in all the way? I saw somewhere on here that someone had issues with it and just needed to push harder.

Got it in one. I thought it was in all the way, but it had a bit further to go.

Hello all! How can I save my battery life? I worked Sat. and by 1pm by battery was dead. So when I got home I changed some settings and today while at work (12hrs) I was able to get through the day and then some. But I am so confused by what's running:I went to Settings-Applications-Running Settings, I have to idea what these services mean. For instance ObexService, Agent Service, HtcDmService..to name a few.

Well when working do you need internet all the time? If you just need calls and Text you could turn of mobile networks and that will save you lots of battery. You can also see whats using the batter by going to:
menu/settings/about phone/Battery.
You can also add a short cut to this by hitting:
+ /shortcut/settings/Battery Use

another thing to make sure of is that you don't have mobile networks and Wifi on at the same time.

I have both of these widgets on one of my home screens so that I can switch them on and off quickly when needed.

Add Settings Widgets:
+ /Widget/settings/ Add Mobile Networks and Wi-Fi (if you are in a 4G network add that one too).

Try going through a day with these off and watching the battery usage. The battery usage would be the most helpful to us if you can get that data. Thanks and Good luck.

Also Did a lot of people play with your phone at work? ;)

Is it possible to set exceptions for contacts like you can with Profiles on the Blackberry. For example have the phone in silent mode but have it set for a specific contact to ring normally and have it easily changeable.

So if I want my wife to ring through if she is out of town and I have the phone on silent at night. However easily changeable so she would also be able to be silent like all others if I have my phone set to silent while at work.

Damn man that sounds like a kick ass feature to have. We should send it in to Google as a suggestion. I don't think we have that power right now. Once you silence the phone it's silenced. I do know there are ways to silence notifications, ringer and media sounds separately, just not sure about the contact level. I will keep my eyes open for that.

Yeah RIM got that feature right. It is pretty slick being able to set exceptions based off a specific contact or contact group.

How do I sign out from Talk? I want to sign off and sign on using a different id. Sign off from the menu does not work :(

Ok, I tried this out. It looks as though it is using the Google account you are using with the phone. So to change it you may either need to log out of the account on the phone (not sure how to do that) or set up the second login in gmail. Maybe then you can change.

trying to set up the hot spot and get:
error CODE 67 .Registration error. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.
with a dismiss button at the bottom.
i have setup a hotspot name as well as a password for it, my laptop does reconize it but i can't sign on.
any suggestions?

Ok so Android has some crazy options is what i'm learning fast with my new EVO. Is there a way to make it so that Facebook doesn't dump each and every friend's birthday into my calender? I'm fine with the ones I have in my phone book already but I really don't want all of them.

I'm not an expert on Android, but I have found that you can edit each contact and change what they are linked to. You ought to be able to unlink from Facebook those who you don't wish to show up.

Well I have to say I didn't subscribe to the sprint hotspot stuff, I didn't feel as though I would use it enough to warrant a $30 charge per month. Hopefully someone else here is using it and can help out. I have rooted my phone though and did play with the other wifi tether apps. It does work well if you want to know how to do it I can point you to the right posts.

On my palm pre, I could make a call on the phone while I'm driving and transfer the call to the bluetooth of my car by selecting a button.

How can I do this on the EVO? While I'm driving all incoming calls go straight to my car but sometimes I may just want to transfer the calls back and forth from my car to my phone?

hit the menu button and in the menu you'll see the option to switch back and forward.

Google Talk? I have never tried it. Guess there is a first time for everything.

OK, I got this one! Look in your apps list for "Talk" and open it. Then hit the menu button and go into the settings and sign out. I think you can also set it to not sign in automatically as well (to conserve a little more juice).
