I just rooted! 
I was scared at first but there's nothing to it it's like going to the doctors for a shot.
I did this to root my phone.
How To: Root the HTC Incredible (Unrevoked Method) Updated 09.20.10! | TheUnlockr
It was pretty easy. I'm backing up my phone now using the clockworkmod recovery
edit:
It backs it up on your SD card under clockworkmod - make sure you have like 800MB free on your card.

You can still add some of the programs like setCPU that can help with battery. And you can do nandroid backups as a just in case.

I just bought Titanium Back up pro (root required) and there's an option there to to remove bloatware.
I'm still playing with it and so far I'm hoping it backs up my contacts. That's all I really care about.

Well I just installed the business gingersense ROM v1.5 and It's pretty sweet. So I already have gingerbread now with sense 3.0 Yes 3.0 and it is pretty cool.
The only confusing thing about the ROM is that it says I have 78MB free RAM but when i go into settings, applications, running apps it says I have 334MB free RAM. It runs fine tho so *shrug

I finally got sick of waiting and Rooted and Loaded Cyanogen 7 up yesterday. Was very nervous, took my time, went step by step and so far it has been great!
I just rooted!

i want kingdom for my phone lol
I'm currently rooted and running senseless revolution 1.0. I haven't "upgraded" yet because I haven't found another rom that gives me one of the main functions I like about senseless revolution which is a pull-down from the top bar that gives me access to GPS, wifi, 3g, blutooth toggle switches. Anyone know of another more current rom that offers that?
I have noticed that lots of people posting to this thread have given up on the official upgrade and have taken to rooting their phone.
If I were to follow the same path would I be able to fix the out of space issue with a rooted phone?
To be honest that is my main concern at this point and it does not look like the official upgrade will do anything for me in that department.
Yes, if you root you can deal with the low on space bug. You can install/setup and apply called Not Enough Space which moves app data elsewhere on the phone. Also many roms are less vulnerable to the problem.
