Michael Collins was my 10 years old definition of the ultimate hero for staying to orbit on his own. You got the impression even then the whole thing was an untried gamble on mathematics, assumptions and engineering (let alone the cutting edge computing we thought they had).
I thought, living in a large family, to stay on his own and (I think) needing Armstrong and Aldrin to get back and being there to manoeuvre with them was awesome (stupid and awesome).
