Root Trouble installing app to sd card

sushifor5

Is there some secret setting I need to fix to allow an app from amazon market to install on my sd card? I downloaded a free app of day and it wants to install on my sd card and every time I try, it fails. There is no option I can see to change download location for app. Any ideas? TIA much!

What do you mean by it fails? What happens?

Well, it is downloaded on my account, but then when I click the install button, it acts like it is working (progress bar), then I get a message that says "app failed to install." I've had success with other apps from amazon market, but not this one. It wants to go directly on the sdcard, which is why I wondered if my phone is doing something to block it.

If it is downloaded via Amazon, are the APK files from Amazon stored on your SD card? Or are they installed and copied to the Data partition instantly like the Play Store?

Ummmm...i'm going to fail this test, lol. How would I figure that out?

Using a root file browser ( You have one already, right?) go to /data/data. In laymen terms go to the root directory ( / ) then click on the data folder, then click on the data folder.
Let me know which root file browser you have if you still having problems trying to get to the / directory.

I have androzip...i looked and found /data, but there is no data folder inside. ? TIA!

You need to install ES File Explorer. Go into the settings and change the home directory to just \ (delete everything but the first \). Scroll down and enable root. Change the file system to Read/Write (remember to change it back when down). Should hook you right up as AndroZip is not a Root File Explorer.

Ok, I'll give that a try and report back.

Ok, I downloaded it and will set up as you suggest.

Question...more detail please on "change file system to Read/Write, change back when down"? Not following you there. Why read/write? When and why to change back?

Once I get ES File Explorer set up, then what?

Update...i tried downloading another amazon free app of day and it won't install...same fail. Now I have 2 amazon apps in the queue that won't install. These are the only 2 free apps of day I have ever downloaded. I had no trouble with 1app I purchased, and another app I downloaded that was free (but not FAOTD).

EStrongs File Explorer, settings, scroll down to Root Settings, turn on root explorer and r/w.

And set your home directory to / not backslash, Android not Windows. ;)

Ok, all I see under the other options category are: Root setting, Up to root, Mount, and Backup. I clicked on Root setting, the first option, but don't see an option for r/w...and I don't know what the other options are. Thx for the help!

Click all four.

Mount is the one that gives you read and write access to the system.

Have you made a nandroid backup yet?

Not a good idea to tinker under the hood without that.

Have you tried clearing cache and Dalvik from recovery?

You may just have bad installs from corrupted downloads.

You are downloading directly from Amazon only for Amazon apps, correct?

Ok, will click all 4.

Nandroid, yes.

Clearing cache and dalvik from Link2sd, not recovery. Why would it be different? I'll try, just curious.

Yes, downloading directly from amazon...have re-downloaded numerous times to no avail.

Thx!

I have tools to clear cache and Dalvik, but honestly, I only trust doing that from recovery, as you need to reboot anyway right after that.

The Play Store downloads into a cache area, so clearing that helps with bad downloads from there, that was my thinking, maybe Amazon does the same.

But I see under /data/data/com.amazon.venezia that there is a cache folder there, please confirm that it is empty.

I think that is where AndyOpie was headed.

Sorry for the short answer, was in the middle of trying to find and then pick a good security oriented Linux distro.

Here is the low down (actually downloaded it, instead of using my swiss cheese memory).
In the settings:

View: Select Details

Home Directory: Where it shows /sdcard/, delete everything but the first / (thanks for catching my mistake EarlyMon), then select ok.

Root Settings: Root Explorer-on, Up to Root-on, Mount File System-on (off when done)

Thats all for the basic setup.

It looks like the settings menu has been updated since I last used it.
Hopefully that will clear things up for you.

Ok, got it, thanks to both of you.

So, once I'm set up in file explorer, what am I looking for and doing? What earlymon said? Then what?

Thx! Off to bed, will continue in a.m.

Okie Dokie?

Look to see if the other apps that you downloaded are stored here. They should be.

How much space do you have left on the internal storage of the phone?
Check how much RAM you have as well.

OK, for space:

RAM is 189MB free and 235MB used
Internal storage is 149MB free and 30MB used

When I go into the /data/data folder, I see tons of files, most starting with com. I found a com.amazon.venezia, which I believe is the amazon app store. When I click on that folder, I see folders inside: cache, databases, files, lib, shared_prefs.

When I click on the cache folder, it's empty.I don't see the apps I downloaded in any of those folders.

So, am I supposed to be finding the apps in the /data/data folder...not in the com.amazon.venezia folder?

TIA so much!!

Edit: I don't know if it's relevant, but I still use Link2sd...so maybe there's something involved there?

You might be correct. Go back into the settings of Link2SD and turn off Auto link and set install location to auto (scroll down a little). If set to auto already, try internal location.

OK, sorry, LOL...I'm not quite following. So doing that ... what am I looking for/where to find/install these apps? Thanks much!
