Root Trouble installing app to sd card

I think the app you are trying to install needs to be installed to the internal storage (at least right at first). By un-ticking auto link and selecting auto install on the download location you might be able to download.
If not, we might need to move the dalvik cache to the sd card.

Did that, tried to install again, didn't help.

Is there some secret setting I need to fix to allow an app from amazon market to install on my sd card? I downloaded a free app of day and it wants to install on my sd card and every time I try, it fails. There is no option I can see to change download location for app. Any ideas? TIA much!

Well, it is downloaded on my account, but then when I click the install button, it acts like it is working (progress bar), then I get a message that says "app failed to install." I've had success with other apps from amazon market, but not this one. It wants to go directly on the sdcard, which is why I wondered if my phone is doing something to block it.

Have you considered and ruled out that it might be an issue with the Amazon Store app itself first? Are other users for that particular app also having similar install issues? You do have adequate free SD space for the app install? Anyway, you might try a couple of common solutions I found on Amazon customer discussion forums:

1) Click on the [Menu] button, and then <Manage applications>
2) Select the Amazon Appstore
3) <Force stop>, <Clear cache> and then <Clear data>
4) Click on the [Return] button twice to back out
5) Run the Appstore; will have to re-login
6) Try installing that problematic app now

If the install still does not work, then try:

7) Uninstall the Amazon Appstore
8) On Amazon page, de-register your device (your phone)
9) Still on Amazon page, re-register your device (your phone)
10) Download and install the Amazon Appstore
11) Run the Appstore
12) Try installing that problematic app now

I actually did all those steps after chatting with amazon customer service...none of it worked, and they were stumped. So that's why I'm asking here. I have half of a16gb sd card available. Thanks!

Since you hadn't mentioned it earlier and no one else asked, I thought I would checked for the obvious... :) I don't have any new ideas for you, but as Andy had suggested, make sure that Link2SD is not automatically linking that new app when the Amazon Appstore tries to install it. Is the Appstore itself currently linked or moved to the SDcard? If so, maybe try changing back to the phone.

That is a good suggestion, and I actually tried it with no success, but will probably try everything again today. Can't hurt. :)

Silly suggestion. Try restoring your backup or installing a fresh ROM (one without Link2SD installed) and download and install the Amazon App Store App. Then try to install the app. If it install, it is having a problem with Link2SD or where Link2SD thinks it should be installed to.
If it still doesn't install, it's just the app itself and no manner of work will help.

One silly suggestion brings another sillier one...

- Nandroid backup current state
- do as Andy suggested above
- if app works, backup the app & its data with TB
- restore Nandroid from above
- try restoring app & its data with TB

:hmmmm: might worth a shot...

[Edit] NVM, ignore this suggestion if you'll be updating the ROM... :) [/Edit]

They are both good suggestions, albeit requiring time, so will need to wait til I have a free eve, lol!

Also, I'll need to reread about how to do restores from nandroid...I've only flashed twice. I'm all thumbs on this arena. ;)

Thx!

Ok, here's the latest:

I wanted to experiment before going to the trouble of flashing, etc... So, I went into amazon app store and chose a free app and downloaded it, and it installed with no trouble. In fact, it wanted to install itself onto sd card and it did. My link2sd was on auto link and that was no problem.

So, I'm not sure what to think. I'm wondering if the free apps of the day that I chose (both educational games for my children for long car rides) are incompatible with our V? I didn't see a notice on them, but who knows?

Any thoughts? Thx!

That's why I suggested getting a none Link2SD ROM on your phone. It's really pretty easy to flash a ROM.
Go into the recovery and choose the backup option first. Then install the same version of the ROM you have installed, just don't install Link2SD.
Follow where we are coming from?

Don't worry about the title of the thread, it's just where the post with my little tutorial took shape. Start at step 8.

Ok, so put on a fresh rom and don't put back all my apps, just the amazon app store and try from scratch...seems like a good test.

I think my rom, harmonia, has been updated anyway. Maybe I should grab newest version.

Thx!

If you are going to install an updated version of Harmonia and keep it, You might as well backup all your apps. After performing the test on the offending Amazon App Store app you can go about restoring your apps onto that ROM.
I didn't realize there was an update for your ROM when I made the suggestion, I figured you would be restoring the backup.
If you need more help let us know.

I'm sure I could do either...for the purposes of our experiment, what do you think is the best choice? Install backup or update rom?

OK, this is related, but slightly off topic, LOL. I'm going to try to update tonight. I'm seeing that Leslie Ann now has other Harmonia versions. I only ever used 1 (original, froyo) and like it a lot. I was curious about her 2nd, gingerbread version. What major changes can I expect when going to a gingerbread rom? Should I try it considering i'm tech adverse and slow to change? LOL :) I love using Link2sd so I can have 180 apps and lots of internal space left; is that supported in the gingerbread roms? TIA!

(funny how trying to get a couple apps to install leads to major phone changes! ;)

You can expect the same bare bones ROM with room for apps. Plus you have more control over how the system looks and acts.
With it being a Gingerbread ROM you can now use a wider variety of apps and some flash-play is possible.
It's also faster and smother.

Sounds like I should give it a try. So that will be like loading on an entirely new ROM, not just a Harmonia 1 update, right? OK, might brave it, LOL. Just downloaded the froyo Harmonia update last night. Will maybe just try it and see if I can get those amazon apps to install, then move up in the tech world to a gingerbread harmonia.

By the by, I haven't heard back from Leslie Ann on the other forum for the answer to this question...maybe you might know?

The last time i flashed Harmonia 1.7 I needed to use the pica07remix.zip to fix my newer Hitachi "black screen" problem.
LeslieAnn's latest info on the 1.9 update says:
1.87 12June1 Harmonia 1.87 fixed kernel flash issue. removed due to wifi issues
1.9 12June12 Harmonia 1.9 fixed wifi, added Goo.im info

So, I'm wondering if I need to use that pica07 again for flashing 1.9? Did I use it because of the "kernel flash issue?" I'm honestly not sure...I know, I'm terrible! I don't understand what a kernel is, LOL! :)

Also, I used her other program, "prep for new rom.zip," which was awesome. It did all the work rather than me having to do all the wiping and clearing before installing the rom. I'm wondering if I can use that again to do all the wiping/clearing that needs to be done before flashing any other rom?

TIA!

You are correct. You should not need the pica07-remix.zip. She has fixed that issue.
If your going to use the Froyo Harmonia then all you need to do is wipe the "cache partition" and the "dalvik cache"(found in the advanced section of the recovery, hit the back button when done.). Once that is done then go to the "install zip from sd card" option and select it. Then select the "choose zip from sd card" option. Then scroll to your Harmonia.zip and select it. Once it is done installing it will take you back to the "choose zip from sd card" option. Hit the back button and select the "reboot system now" option.

Remember it will take 5-7 minutes sometimes to fully boot the first time. If you did everything right, you will not even be able to tell you flashed the upgrade. All your apps will be right where you left them. You will eventually figure out where the improvements where made, but I don't think Leslie Ann made any changes to the overall look of the ROM.

If I remember correctly you have Titanium Backup.

Note: You need to do a batch backup just before you flash the update. Take the sd card out and copy the data to a folder on your computer.

Pretty easy isn't it?

Now make a backup of that setup. This will make it possible to return to a complete system when done with trying to see it you can get the app to download. If it doesn't then it's the app. Just flash the backup you made to get everything back (this will be a lot quicker and easier then starting from scratch if the app still doesn't install).

Now it's time to do a full wipe and format to prepare for a fresh install of Harmonia.
ROM installation instructions: Now you need to do all these things when installing a new ROM or a backup. Some might say you don't need to do all this for a backup restore, but I myself don't want even the slightest bit of residual data left behind.
A. wipe data/factory reset
B. wipe cache partition.
C. wipe dalvik cache(advanced section)
D. Go to the mounts and storage section. Format all these options: boot, cache, data, and system (be careful not to accidentally wipe the sd card)
E. go to install zip from sd card
F. go to select zip from sd card, select the Harmonia.zip. When done hit the back button once.
G.,When all this is done select reboot system now.

It will take 5-10min.for the initial reboot.

Now you can go to the market app and click on it and sign in to your google account.
If you can now download the app in question. Keep this setup and restore your apps thru Titanium Backup once you have downloaded it from the market.

OK, I did everything you described to flash the 1.9 update. When I rebooted, my phone wasn't like it was before...my Link2sd didn't work. So I "recreated mount script" and am rebooting... So, the update wasn't as smooth as we assumed, but I'm sure I'll figure this all out. That's just "step one" in this grand experiment to get a couple amazon apps, LOl!!! :)

OK, this isn't working. entire system is now wonky, apps gone, phone "low on space," unresponsive. i think i need to do something more drastic, looks like i'm in for a full wipe and flash?

This is about my Link2sd, so is there some special step i need to do when flashing an update?

edit...ok, all apps are showing up, and Link says that everything is linked to sd card like it was before, but my internal storage space has gone to only 2% remaining. i had 85% before flash, so it seems like the Links aren't working and everything has gone to internal. but when i open Link2sd, it says all is linked. rebooting isn't helping.

Please help? TIA!

OK, I restored my backup and back to square one again.

If you have any insights on flashing harmonia update and Link2sd, let me know. I'll do some reading as well. TIA!

Not to worry, you have always been a great help to me.

And, it gave me a reason to read and learn how to restore my backup, something I've never done. :)

I think for the purposes of figuring out my app install problem, I just want to flash a bare rom anyway, as per your initial suggestion. So will do so tomorrow.

Question: I'll need to access my sd card after flashing the new rom to install the amazon app store. Do I need to sign in to google play to grab a file explorer to do that? I wasn't going to put back my app s from TiBu until after trying the troublesome amazon apps.

Thx again!
