UK iPhone 4 owner has had enough!!!

Hey all, Just joined and this is my first post. Am getting tired of my IP4 and the IOS OS. Its jailbroken and yes it does allow a bit more freedom and free apps, but have a few mates that have recently got HTC Desires and after having a quick look... I think I'm now on my way over to Android.

IP4 has a great screen and is lovely, im just getting fed up with IOS and its restrictive nature (notifications, integration etc...) Desire interface with widgets and all just seems more user friendly and informative. Yes I do value the IP4 internal storage for movies and music etc, and the HD video recording is great as is the camera... and if there was a way that I could wipe the IP4 and have a fully running Android ROM on it, that would be the perfect solution...

So, is there anyone who currently owns a Desire that has an iPhone 3gs or 4 and can help me understand what im going to miss the most from the IP4, but love the most on the desire?

Thanks.

Once you root, you'll understand the full capabilities of this awesome device! ;)

Welcome to a brave new world! :)

inb4 widehead fanboism.

But how does a novice Root?

I have had my Desire for 8months but will soon be upgrading (probably to the Samsung Galaxy Sii).

I am tempted to root the desire but it seems you need to have a lot of techie knowledge to do this - I know there are some guides but is it really easy? And what are the real gains (other than being able to put more apps on the SD card) Will it run smother with nicer UI (I currently use ADW but that is laggy and lots of force closes)

By the way (more related to this post) I used to hae the iphone 3gs and much as it is a great piece of kit, I agree that it was just too restrictive - I like to be able to set up the phone the way I want and be able to change the UI from time to time. I have never looked back since ditching the iphone- Android Rules!

Well, rooting won't make up for the huge downgrade in multimedia capture; loudspeaker quality; available apps (especially, but not only, games); onboard memory and the slight downgrade in screen quality.

Rooting doesn't make the Desire magically better than the iPhone4. Either you're invested in Android and the Google cloud or you're not.

The fact that you want Android on your iPhone4 is interesting. You need to decide if you value hardware over operating system.

And really, seriously check the Desire's photo and video capture before you buy. Oh, and listen to the loudspeaker.

thanks for the reply...

I have jailbroken my IP4 but to be honest I only ever use the jailbreak to add tiny tweaks that are probably already present in Android.... I'm not into totally hacking my phone and turning it into a bespoke OS just for me...

All i want is something I can tweak easily and get same performance as my IP4 (movies, music, web browsing, good quality photos and HD Video recording, facebook updates, email, text.... all pretty standard stuff I guess).

I know IP4 is a beast when it comes to multimedia - never found anything to come close to it - I just HATE iTunes with a passion!! Thats a massive bug with me, only being able to add items to the phone on my macbook and not just plug it in to any PC and add what I want.

Am thinking Desire S though in a few months - you lot think it will be of similar power as IP4, I dont wanna buy a last gen phone for 24 months lol

I have a desire and my wife has an iPhone 4 and they are both brilliant phones and very much suited to both of us.

The desire will be appreciated very much by the tech/gadget lover. There seems to be an endless amount of things that you can change, alter and mess around with.

The iPhone does all the same basic things as the desire and on the face of it probably is a little slicker and is a bit more "polished" shall we say. But this slickness and style comes at a price, if you happen dislike the way the iPhone does a certain task "tough" as I will only do it that way and that's it because Apple ain't gona change it for no one.

The iPhone is made for people who want there stuff to "work" with no messing tests probably why the OS can be a little restrictive in its adaptability for the techie minded user.

Me personaly I love the desire and Android, but I a few months back I might not have said that as I'd only used the iPhone but now id never change.

I switched from a 3gs 16gb iphone to an HTC desire in January. My experience of both would be:
Apps seem a bit more polished on the iphone - very slick and smooth.
Desire is more customisable - more "tinkerable" Big let down on the desire is the sound quality for me.

Oh, and I loathed itunes.

Overall I prefer the Desire, but I came from a 3gs not a 4. But they are both great phones in their own right.

Hmm, wonder why people get a desire and download apps such as keyboards or go sms so they can mimic the iphone?

What about the desire HD, or maybe wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2 motorola AtrixLG Optimus 3D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdryfiLJkR0

These are the main next gen Android phones that I have seen and they will be out soon (apparently this month) though I know the Atrix is out now.

They will all have better;

Camera
Speaker
Battery
Screen
Storage
Speed
etc

than the Desire. Lets face it, the desire is getting on a bit and while its a great phone it is starting to show its age (over a year old now!). I for one am looking at the Atrix or Galaxy S2 for my next phone in the next few months.

Having said that, the Disire can be gotted for a decent price if you look hard so it depends if you want to spend more or less really.

Final note, the beuty of Android is the MEGA choice of hardware. So have a look at all the options and see if any wow you enough to part with the iphone 4.

If you have any more questions just ask away!!!!

i guess, it's just because they can and some small things make a big difference.

you might not like 99% of what the iPhone has to offer but that last 1% would be very nice to have. i've used Handcent and i really liked the speech bubble look but i went back to stock after a while because i was bored.

that's the beauty of Android.

Welcome to the power of Android. Enjoy your freedom. The desire S looks very nice indeed, unless you want to wait for the dual core androids :)

thats the truth
its not black and white, you dont need to side with one or the other
there are things in ios i like and things i dont
android allows you to customise and as such i can take the things i like about ios and implement it on my android if i so choose

i dont choose android because i dont like iphone. i choose it because i think its better at doing the things i want it to.

Thats a massive bug with me, only being able to add items to the phone on my macbook and not just plug it in to any PC and add what I want.

If you disable sync mode you can drag and drop on to your device from any computer (at least that used to be the case)

You may be disappointed with the HD (and SD, for that matter) video recording. It seems to have quite a low framerate, so that shots with anything but very slow movement have significant blurring. Changing to a class 6 card doesn't seem to make much difference so it appears to be a hardware limitation of the phone.
There's a tip in the Tips & Tricks forum that suggests setting the sensitivity on the Stills setup to 800ISO. This does reduce the blurring during video, but it's still noticeable.

If you're interested, here's a couple of videos of me waving my hand about:

Note that WMP won't play these but Media Player Classic will.

or move to a custom rom where its fixed...

Really???

Ooh. Might be the final shove I need to Root. Any particular recommendations for ROM's that fix this issue? I'm liking the look of the Oxygen battery life.

I think because Apple is so restrictive, it makes sure that the 'basic' is done 'right'. For most people, it's all good and dandy, they don't want to have to search for a note/task app or voice recorder (stock Android).

The beauty of Android is the choices available to you to pick what suits your needs. You are allowed to customize your phone 1000x more than an iPhone. If you put a dozen Desire phones side by side, they will all be different and reflect the owner more personally than the iPhone. Just check out this thread and you can see some amazing work from our Desire members.

Google does not force you to use their apps and only their apps. My Nexus One (the Desire's big brother) came with the bare bones of apps. I had to search and research for the right apps that suited me best. This is where some people prefer iOS to Android. They think 'Apple just works' why doesn't Android. They don't want to go beyond what is required to get 'basic' apps and to make their phones work for them. These people are the ones that usually 'hate' Android.

I know leedroid have drastically improved the camera performance on sense roms
miui rom has great 720p recording which is extremely smooth and jitter free

gingervillain is great for vga 30fps recording but does not support 720p recording yet due to limitations on 2.3.x on desire atm

Miui makes the camera perform a lot better and sharper + fixes the bluetooth issues.

Thought I saw a link to the miui camera in the GV thread to flash. Not tried it myself though, not sure on its limitations.

Cheers Guys, will go and have a look. See you over in All Things Root when I cock it up!
