Root Unlocking the Bootloader???

No the recovery will allow you to FIRST make a backup. THE NEXT THING this will allow you to do a wipe data wipe cache and etc. Doing this will allow you to put either a custom rom or mod the device . But first make a backup when you unlock the bootloader and put a custom recovery or cwm .

Also its apps such as titanium backup that will allow you to back up settings contacts and sms / mms. This would need to be used once you root and can be found in the playstore. Use this tb before you make a backup through cwm or custom recovery .

Dam i just learned something didnt know kush has something else out how is it working good or bad .

That may and maynot work its blacked out on the lg esteem and droid razor max

It's comprehensive so you have to take your time the first time through, make sure that you're selecting what you want - like anything else lol.

Needs a matching piece on your PC, and he provides for Windows, OS X and Linux, so I'd rate it very good.

Just a quick question before I pull the trigger and install Helium and backup and look into rooting;

Does it backup Contacts, Apps and App data, and settings? I looked at the app in the play store and it did mention app and app data, but I didnt notice anything saying it would/wouldnt backup Contacts or Settings.

Afaik, you can't back up settings without root.

It does do contacts, apps and app data, call log and SMS.

Or go to the Gmail web and export all contacts to a vCard file. If your contacts are on the phone only, do the same export via your contacts app.

vCard files transport easily and can't be beat.

Looks like segv11 is prepping his BootUnlocker app to work for the N5.

[APP][2013-03-08][root][GNex/Dev] BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices -- version 1.3.1

edit: beta .apk posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47305830&postcount=274

Apparently, the N5's /misc partition mirrors the N4 in the byte responsible for indicating the bootloader's lock status.

So, if you are rooted and find that you've "accidentally" re-locked your N5 and want to unlock it without wiping/losing anything (or having to use the fastboot oem unlock command), you'll be able to use the BootUnlocker app (soon-ish) or, if you are brave and adb savvy, you could type a specific dd command to unlock or re-lock your device.

:)

I apologize for the noob question but I've been reading and studying everything I can before I receive my N5. I plan on unlocking bootloader and rooting my device but my question is should I do that before I take it to my carrier to activate my service?

It shouldn't matter one way or the other.

I'd just suggest doing the bootloader unlock before you spend a lot of time getting everything set up just right because unlocking it will perform a factory reset

I don't think it should matter, Hunter :).

You probably just want to have your bootloader unlocked before you put anything on it that would get wiped when you do unlock it.

Nexus devices are a blast...my son has the N5 and I'm likely to get one (or three :)) myself before the end of the year.

Cheers!

edit: LOL, ninja'd by Rxpert :)

Rxpert & scary alien, thank you both for the quick response. I'm super excited to get my N5, just ordered today. I have a Nexus 7 but this will be my first Nexus phone. Thanks again!! :D
