You can make a nandroid backup. Which will backup everything on your phone. Settings, apps, data, literally everything. That way when you do flash a rom if something gets messed up you can always reflash it back to how it is now. Its a HUGE step twords where we want to be and means if a rom were released right this moment, you'd be able to flash it and go back to how it is now if needed.
I suggest anyone that is going to try out roms from here on out to grab titanium backup and buy a license for it. You'll use it to backup all your apps and settings prior to flashing a new rom. Once you flash a new rom your phone will be cleared of all the apps, data and etc. So once you reflash a new rom you'll just fire up titanium (after you've created backups of everything) and reinstall all your data, apps, etc. This will get you back in the game much faster than trying to download each file one by one in the app store and this way you won't lose your contacts or any game/app data/settings at the same time.
