Root Unrevoked question (validation error) please help

Okay so even though I don't have SU acces in my stock rom right now I can flash a custom one and get it, when I went into terminal emu and typed "su" the prompt didn't change.

Sorry urge I'm not trying to jack your thread Ive just been following your thread along with mine cuz we have the same exact problem..I was wondering how to flash a Rom even though we don't have su permission also if its possible where can I find a stock tom that's rooted

No... I didn't unzip it... I tried it several times naming it both PC36IMG and PC36IMG.zip just in case windows was hiding the file extension... In hboot the file above PC36IMG.zip (I think it is called PC36DIAG.nbh or something similar) said "no image or wrong image." I don't know if that is relevant or not...

What are the differences between clockwork and Amon ra? Should I try the latter instead? maybe it will have more luck...

PS I really appreciate your help and time. Thanks!

You can try a different one if you like, but some else is likely going on. I know for a fact that they all should work. By any chance are you using a different SD card other than stock?

BTW, you won't be able to use SetCPU with the stock rom... Unless I missed it, I didn't see that point mentioned in this thread. It requires a Custom Rom.

You can use setcpu with the stock kernel; you just can't overclock. You can disable perflock so that you can use profiles and underclock, etc.

Right, so all you guys need is S-OFF showing in hboot, and a custom recovery. It doesn't matter if you have CW or RA at this point. Just make sure you don't have CW 3.0.0.x. Assuming you have new phones (sw version 3.70/hboot 2.10) here is a stock rooted ROM:

[ROM] RUU SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense - Deodexed & Odexed Version - xda-developers

You will need to wipe data/cache/dalvik, then flash it from recovery. The rooting for dummies guide has instructions. Despite not having su in the ROM, you can still make a nandroid backup, and most definitely should. The only part that's annoying is that you can't really back up all your apps easily to transfer to the new ROM.

Well assuming you're on 3.70 already, and have the latest radios, you can either stick with stock:

[ROM] RUU SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense - Deodexed & Odexed Version - xda-developers

Or you can pick from the many custom ROMs out there. The list is here:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

Here's a thread discussing some of the more popular ones:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/250161-poll-vote-your-favorite-rom.html

If you're not on 3.70 yet, you'll need to update to the latest radio. There are instructions in the rooting for dummies guide.

I have been looking at a couple of them, I have been thinking about Myn's or going to going all out and getting CM

Myn's, and also mikfroyo are great ROMs. Others will have their own opinions. CM is great if you don't care about 4g, HDMI, or any Sense modifications.

Okay so I have RA on my phone, the instructions in the guide are for Clockwork are they the same or is there something else I need to know to flash in RA. Also what ROMs have SU as a built in app because I can't get it to install from recovery or do you just recommend downloading it from the market? Also how hard is it to install the google apps for Cyanogen because I think that may be the direction I'm going to go or I'm going to try out myn's haven't decided if I want AOSP or stick with Sense based.

Also I don't really care about not being able to back up my apps because I don't really have that much on it since I wiped when rooting.

1) The process is basically the same between RA and CW. The only difference is where the menu options are. For RA, you wipe data/cache/dalvik all under the wipe menu. Otherwise, all the concepts are the same. Make a nandroid backup, first. It's the backup option in RA.
2) Unrevoked is supposed to install Superuser, but when it gets screwed up like this, and just gives you S-OFF only, the easiest thing to do to fix it is to just flash a rooted ROM. Almost all rooted ROMs come with Superuser already installed. Almost invariably, you won't have to add it manually. You can safely assume this is the case 99% of the time.
3) Flashing Gapps is really simple. Whenever you flash an AOSP based ROM, just flash it like any other ROM. Once it is done, boot up once, then reboot back into recovery. Wipe cache/dalvik and flash gapps like you did the ROM (difference is there is no need to wipe data). Boot up, and you should be good. The download link for whatever AOSP ROM you want should have a separate download link for gapps.
4) You can backup some stuff with mybackup pro without a rooted ROM. It just won't be quite as complete.

About how long does it take to flash a ROM through recovery? Also before I do a NAND backup should factory data reset my device to make a clean slate for the backup and if I do a factory data reset will it affect anything that would mess up what I have already done? And finally when I flash a ROM do I also need to flash a kernal?

1) It takes about ~2 minutes to flash a ROM. Sometimes more; sometimes less.
2) You'll want a nandroid backup of your current ROM (custom or stock) before flashing a new ROM. Don't wipe data until after you've made the nandroid backup (unless you want a nandroid backup of a stock ROM, but that's a lot of space for something that can be done by just flashing the ROM again).
3) A factory reset will wipe all user data (apps) and settings. It takes you back to the currently flashed ROM the way it was when it was flashed.
4) Almost all ROMs come with everything they need to run, including a kernel. Most of the time it's just the stock kernel, but not always. Read the documentation for a ROM for what kernel it includes. If you want to flash a different kernel afterwards, you can. You should probably give a ROM/kernel a couple of days or a couple charge cycles on stock before trying another kernel.

Okay thanks and I think I will do a data reset so that I have a clean backup to make sure nothing is wrong with any of the files, the only bad thing is it is going to be a backup of a non-rooted ROM although right now there isn't anything I can do about that.

I'm not positive what is causing that either, BUT I've seen it a time or two, and it's pretty easy to get where you need to be. Verify the following:

1) S-OFF (you already did, so...that's good)
2) From hboot, select the recovery option. Do you have clockwork?
3) Boot up normally, and verify that you have the superuser app. If you don't, install it from the market.
4) Search for "terminal emulator" in the market, and download it. Open it, and type "su" without quotes, then enter. If the prompt changes from $ to #, you're good.

Let me know which of those things work and which don't. We can decide from there how to get everything where it should be.

Okay, so I'm new to this forum and I am having the same issues. Some of the language here is over my head but I have done a lot of the stuff mentioned in the thread.

1: S-OFF is off.
2: I do have clockwork. I didn't at first but I flashed it yesterday. (2.6.0.1)
3: I downloaded the Superuser app and Terminal Emulator and it does switch from $ to #.
4: It still wouldn't work so I flashed a stock ROM (Deodexed Version)
5: I did do a Factory Restore before any of this in hope of fixing it but that was a negative.
6: I think I mentioned everything.

I am still getting Validation Error: Backup CID is missing. I'm open to anyones input on how to solve this. Like I said before this is my first go arund on something like this besides when I jailbroke my iphone when I was with the darkside. Thanks for any input.

If the prompt switches in TE then you are good, you are rooted but if it doesn't change is when you are not rooted.

Like he said..you are rooted. You verified this by checking for s-off and running terminal emulator to get the #

there is no reason to keep running unrevoked.

akazabam is going to try and do some tests over the weekend if he has time to try and figure out what is going wrong.

it appears that there is a corrupt unrevoked file floating around, or that the newer phones are having issues but no one really knows yet why it completes on some phones and not on others.

Hey guys. Sorry, been out for a couple days. sharps, you do indeed have root. Basically, the point of those checks are to verify the three things that unrevoked is supposed to do - Give you s-off (the ability to write to system and a few other things), grant you root permissions in your current ROM, and give you a custom recovery. If you have all three (even if you had to do part of it manually), you're done. No need to get unrevoked to finish.

Mr. Ed, I think I'll be able to try some stuff this weekend. I'll let you know if I find out anything interesting.
