Root unrevoked question

Hey guys...i've recently become absolutely infuriated  with my evo and it's horrible battery life. so much so that even though i know nothing about rooting - i'm willing to take the chance and try it.

I read this tutorial and everything seems super easy...i mean it is called idiot proof haha but I just have a question - the thread is locked so i dont know where to ask this except to start a new thread so i'm sorry if i'm breaking a rule or being annoying here..

reading through the tutorial...if i just stopped after installing unrevoked and backing my files up with titanium (right before section II kicks in) ... would I still be able to freeze my bloatware for now? I know installing a new rom and kernel would be ideal for battery life improvement purposes but I just dont know enough about them right now to try it.

any advice would be awesome and greatly appreciated! :) i know there are some very intelligent, friendly people in this forum.

Welcome :). You can ask questions in the "ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's" sticky for future reference, but asking here is okay too. When you say "stopped after installing unrevoked", I'm assuming you mean after you've rooted, correct? Titanium Backup is a root only app, so you have to be rooted to run it. You can backup your stuff prior to rooting using App List Backup (It will save a list the currently installed applications from the Downloads section of the Market and save them to your sd card), SMS Backup and Restore (performs a backup of your SMS messages, and AppBrain (syncs and manages your apps using your google account); your contacts are also synced through your google account.

Once you're rooted, you can use TB to freeze unwanted bloatware. Make sure they are in the "Apps Safe to Freeze" list, provided in section 2 in the "After Rooting" part of the guide.

If you have any questions about the rooting process or unsure about anything and need some clarification, we are ALL HERE TO HELP. Welcome again and see you around the forum.

As long as you follow the Rooting For Dummies Thread you should have no problems and like Frenchy said we are all here to help. Good luck.:D

so i rooted with unrevoked today and i was feeling pretty confident so i decided to attempt to do a nandroid backup as well....but the part in the tutorial that i linked above ^ where it says

I'm not sure what you're referencing exactly. I went to the tutorial you mentioned earlier and I would recommend you checking out "ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's", it's put together a bit better. Check out section III in the "Rooting and Backup" part of Matlock's guide.

sooo i did it! with unrevoked and correct me if im wrong in saying this, haha but i installed Rom manager, made a nandroid backup with clockwork recovery.....

now does anyone have any battery saving suggestions? I havent really researched ROMS and Kernels enough to really understand which is best for this or even how to successfully install one lol.

but yeah, if anyone has any apps or suggestions now that i've rooted to improve my battery life - i'd really appreciate it! i've installed SetCPU and edited the settings but it hasnt seemed to work like i had imagined :(

thanks again guys! :) i wish i were as savvy as you all when it comes to my evo.. haha

To use setcpu, you'll have to flash a kernel that supports overclocking and underclocking.

I recommend the rom and kernel in my sig, fast, stable and good on battery life:)

oh man...i'm so new at this! haha thanks for your help :) i'll check them out for sure.

i read somewhere that not every rom and/or kernel work with unrevoked..is this true?

just to save you some trouble, i would not recommend you use rom manager. it is way to buggy for me. also it didn't flash a couple of roms correctly and my nandroid backups never worked properly. i would do everything in recovery. get to know it so that in the event that your rom is broken and all you have is recovery you will be familiar in what to do.

in ref #2 of my sig is a list of kernels and roms and other goodies that you can take a look at.

also in ref#3 of my sig you can read up on kernels.

you need to have a custom kernel to really use setcpu.
also use http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html to understand it better.

As long as the rom/kernel that you are trying to use is for the Evo, you should be good to go. Unrevoked itself only unlocks the security on your phone. After that, everything else can be done manually if necessary. The rooting process from Unrevoked also installs a custom recovery(clockworkmod) and roots the stock rom. Make sure that you make backups before making any changes to your phone and make sure that the files you try and flash are intended for the Evo and you should be good to go. You will be a flashing addict in no time! ;)
