Root Unroot or update ??

teresannp

Lurker
Hi,
I bought an EVo 4g from a guy on craigslist. I didn't think to ask him if it was rooted or unrooted. Right away the phone would short vibrate 5 times and shut down. I took it to sprint. They said it's rooted so they can't help. They put in a new battery. The tech guy there said the latest update would fix that bug, but I can't get that because it's rooted. So, I have googled and researched for hours now on unrooting (so I can update through sprint) or updating the latest updates for a rooted phone. All of it seems really over my head. So, what should I do? I can follow directions--I even started doing the update for rooted evos, but then the guy on youtube said I'd need to know if I used "unrevoked". I guess that's the program used to root?
Any help would be so very appreciated,
Teresa

ok some info will help out where you are at. if you go into phone settings/about phone/software, type in what you see there. also to make sure that you are rooted: power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot screen. what does it say?

with that info we can then go forward. i would not unroot your phone. we can fix this.

Hello Teresa and Welcome to AF! No worries, we'll get you unrooted in a jiffy! Before we get started, I would like you to read the Unrooting section of this guide.

You can also flash a stock ROM that already has all of the updates included w/o losing root. That way you'll have all the updates and still retain the ability to use root only apps such as Wifi Tether (free wireless tethering w/o having to pay Sprint $30/mo.)

Wow, you guys are nice! :)

Okay, this is the software info:

Okay, so go to the ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's guide I referenced above, go to the "Unrooting" section and choose the appropriate RUU for your hboot, in other words choose * PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 2.10 - S/W 3.70.

Download this file onto your PC and save it somewhere you'll remember

Also download the Unrevoked S-On tool

Make sure you have downloaded the files linked above. Do not extract them
Connect your phone to your computer via USB and change to "Disk Drive" by dragging down from the notification bar.
Transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the root of your sdcard (topmost level of your sd card, NOT in any folders). Do NOT transfer the PC36IMG yet. It'll only cause a hassle and make this take longer.
Once complete, power off the phone
reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Depending on what recovery you're using, you need to flash a zip. Select the unrevoked-foreverson.zip that you just transferred and complete the flash.
When complete, power off the phone. Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. If it says S-ON at the top, select RECOVERY and skip to step 9. If it says S-OFF, repeat steps 5-7 Until it does.

◄●If you have NEVER used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Power off the phone and reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard.
EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery
Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen.
It should check the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the update. Press VOL UP for YES
Once complete, Press VOL UP to reboot.
You are now unrooted!

Also, be sure to rename the RUU to PC36IMG.zip (be sure not to rename it to PC36IMG.zip.zip, Window's automatically adds the file ext. and hides it.)

Do you want to stay rooted or do you want to unroot? We can help you get to where you want either way. Your call.

that is if you want to unroot. we can fix your issue without unrooting. there are a lot of benefits from being rooted then not. so like frenchy said you should read the rooting for dummies guide.

before unrooting lets go into recovery and try wiping and see of that helps.
1.power off the phone then press and hold power+vol down
2.select recovery
3.in recovery wipe dalvik cache and cache

then try rebooting it and see if that helps.

Well, I bought the phone used and rooted (I just didn't know it was rooted). I don't think I know enough to care if it stays rooted or not. I'd like to believe the sprint tech who said the latest software update will fix the 5 short vibrations followed by shut down problem.

I'll try the wiping thing you suggested.

I am aware I can do the update on a rooted phone--it just seems very hard for someone who doesn't know what a rom or hboot means.

Which do you think is harder for me to do? What are the advantages to staying rooted? Even though the phone is rooted it still has tons of sprint bloatware on it.

T.

it probably has a stock but rooted rom. being rooted you can get rid of the bloatware you do not want. you can really customize your phone more so the unrooted phones. you can tether for free. there are a lot of roms that are out now that has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. the sense 3.0 rom is very similar to what the evo 3d has, but it is on an evo. it is kind of like you upgraded your phone for free. of course there is no 3d effect and we do not have the dual core processor. also some roms now have the sense 3.0 camera that has panaroma on it.

there is also more ways to troubleshoot on a rooted phone. in an unrooted phone all you can really do is a soft and hard reset or take it in. we have a custom recovery that can do many wonderous things like make a nandroid backup which is like a save point in a game. if you or the rom messes up, you can restore back to when it was working.

lets get your phone to where it is useable and then from there you can decide if you want to keep it that way. either way i really suggest that you read the dummies guide.

Hello All,
I have a situation that is almost the same where I bought a phone off of ebay that was rooted, and once I got it I did not realize how extensive being "rooted" can be. I also have the EVO 4 G and quickly realized that I need help. Like her, I went to the sprint store where they couldn't help me so I went to the Geek Squad at Best Buy and this was their suggestion. I am going to read the rooting for dummies now, and was hoping to get help with my phone. I am not having any issues, I just want to be able to customize my phone add ringtones and apps but because it is rooted I do not have the market. Where do you go to get these apps? When I go to my manage apps in the "all" category I can see that I have apps but the data says 0.00 so it leads me to believe he just deleted the files but the phone still thinks some of them exist (Archive Viewer, Data dashboard,) eect. Please help me learn the basics of what I need to know!
I apprecitate everything thanks!

Do you want to stay rooted(I would suggest it) or do you want to unroot? MikG has just releases the latest version (MikG2.3) that you can download and flash. If you are going to stay rooted, I would suggest reading the Rooting for Dummies guide so that you can learn some of the basics to having a rooted phone and what you can do with it. The market should be included in the software you have unless for some reason it was deleted.

You can try and go here and see if you can download and install the new market.

Thank you Extreme for the fast reply, I do want to stay rooted, but unfortunately the market must have been deleted I will try to get the newest market app now!

Download it, put it on your sdcard, in the phone use a file explorer to find the file on your sdcard, tap the file and it should ask if you want to install it. Let it install then see if you can access the market.

Was I supposed to dl the first attachment that said update new market or the vending.apk? I dl it on my phone and now it is in my downloads as .zip, and when I press menu i have an option to extract all. Do i need to manualy save each to my sdcard? ex: cert.rsa, cert.sf, manifest.mf, update-binary, updater-script, vending.apk?

ok now that I have correctly downloaded the application after going into the market it keeps giving me an error message saying the application Market has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again- Over and over and over. So now that your phone is rooted where do you go to get your apps to customize your phone? Please help me I didnt know what I was getting myself into when I bought a rooted phone. I am going to read the rooted for dummies (thats exactly how I feel right now). If anyone has any suggestions they are greatly apprecitated. For instance I use B of A, Maps for navigation, and I need new ringtones and music. Thanks for your time!

Sorry. Got pulled away to get some yard work done. You are probably going to have to wipe and reflash the rom. Before you go much farther, I would read the Rooting for Dummies guide to familiarize yourself with the process of rooting and the procedures for backing up and flashing. You can find the latest roms here.

So you understand a little more about what rooting is, basically all it does is unlock the security on your phone to allow you to make changes. You should have access to the same apps, ringtones, wallpapers, etc that the stock phones have access to.

dont be sorry, thanks for all of your help. I got the phone already rooted and I have no Idea where they even rooted it to begin with. I am trying to understand all of the tech language, but my phone only has a few apps that came on it when I got it, not the typical ones that you would normally see such as Google Maps, Facebook, and others, so I do not have access to all of them, with your help I just got the market- and all it would do was foreclose. but there are others that show they are installed, but there is no data and nothing I can do with them. So you believe that I will have to wipe and re-Rom in a sence. and to do so I should start from the unrooting instructions on the page?

I would download VR Superwipe and Mikg 2.2 to your pc. Transfer them to the root of your sd card. Reboot to recovery(which one do you have btw?), make a nandroid backup of your current rom(CWM does all by default, Amon RA you will have to select wimax, cache, and android_secure).

Let me know what you see when you get to recovery and what version it says you have. Once you get a backup, we can go on to wipe and flash the rom

Like Extreme said downloading a new Rom and flashing it will more than likely fix your problems. I run MikG 2.2 at the moment. Once I get the time I'm going to flash 2.3.
I personally love being rooted you can do so much more!
Please read the rooting for dummies guide at the top of the forum. It will explain a lot! You'll actually understand what you're doing not just how. It's not that complicated once you understand the terminology. :D
Read through the guide then post back when you're ready to move on to the next step, we'll help. ;)

Edit: oops Extreme snuck in there. :) follow his instructions MikG is a great Rom.

Ok I have now downloaded to my pc I believe I transferred them to my sd card correctly, but I am not sure how to go to the SD card to see if they are there. I taped sd and phone storage and it says the total space, avail, and the option of unmounting but not whether the files properly transferred.I have the option to do a hot reset, bootloader, and recovery. When I did the recovery earlier today it did not tell me the one that I have. I will look that up right now after selecting recovery this is what it says:
Android system recovery
-reboot system now
-backup/restore toggle
-flash zip from sd card
-wipe
-partition sd card
-mounts
-other
-power off
and at the bottom it says build: RA supersonic -v2.3 is this the information you are refering to and in about phone this is the software information:

I do see where to do the nandroid backup.

Ok. Select Backup/Restore, go to nandroid backup, the first three options should have an "x" in them. Select wimax(your 4g keys), cache, and android_secure. Then select perform backup. Wait til it gets done then we can go to the next step
