Root Unroot question

Hello All,

First off, I am new to rooting. I have been reading up on it for a few weeks now, but still have a limited understanding and feel like I'm reading a foreign language. I just purchased an evo that is already rooted. Its running the Mik Mik 2.3.5 w/ Sense 3.5 Beta 4. I want to unroot and activate the phone. I have read the unroot for dummies, but before starting and running the risk of bricking my phone, I want to make sure this process will work using a Mac. I should also point out that the SD card is wiped and there are no files on it. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.
 
Unrooting is not computer specific. You only need a computer to download the files and put them on your hard drive. I would highly suggest following the instructions in either rooting for dummies guide depending on the guide that pertains to your Evo's H-Boot (turn off phone and power +volume down)

Post your H-boot and ask if your unsure which guide to follow

You do not need to unroot your phone to activate the phone. You can flash a stock rom and Sprint will be able to activate the phone.

I believe all they need to activate is the esn#, then they update prl and update profile update. Then the phone is ready to use
 
Thanks for the quick response guys. I'm going to try to figure out how to flash a stock rom because I would prefer to keep the root if possible, if not, I'll take a look at the h boot screen to see if I can follow the unroot for dummies method.
 
Its pretty easy. I'd suggest making a nandroid backup first

Download the stock rom (ROM & Kernels download page)\
Download VZZR superwipe ( gingerbread for dummies guide
Put them on your SD card (on the root aka not it any folders)
Reboot into recovery
Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Data/Factory reset
Flash superwipe
Flash your ROM

Reboot :)
 
I'm having problems with unrooting. I followed the instructions on the Rooting for Dummies guide. I have S-on back, but when I went to do the second update for the stock rom and recovery it is telling me the file can't find the update. In Hboot its loading the pc36img but not finding the update in it.

I tried running that, and it says it cannot find my phone when hooked up to the computer. I can still flash roms in recovery like when rooted. I flashed the stock gingerbread rom but superuser is still on which I dont get.
 
I get the message

ERROR [170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR

The ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your Android phone. Please check that the USB cable is connected properly between the PC and your Android Phone.


Meanwhile it's connected to the computer and the computer recognizes it.

make sure that you have usb debugging turned on.
 
USB debugging was on, as I am right now with the stock rom and S-on. Would I be alright going into sprint and having them change my number over to a new phone? I'm adding 2 lines onto my plan and changing my number over to a new phone and giving my dad the evo. I still have SU on the phone so obviously it still has root access.

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but I have downloaded the PC36IMG file and loaded it to the sd card. I used file manager to confirm it was there. However, when I open the hb boot, it reads wrong file and will not work. Any suggestions?

If not recognizing it as an update file it must not be named correctly. Can you please double check this?

PC36IMG.zip should be the whole file name. On a windows computer you just need to type PC36IMG and windows adds the zip itself.

Do not name it PC36IMG.zip.zip
 
For the second file on mine that does the rom and recovery. It loads the PC36IMG.zip and then it checks it and goes straight back to the Hboot menu. Is the file on the rooting guide corrupt or missing something? I have the file named correctly, so idk why it's not working
 
I had the same problem thats why I had to use the RUU.exe. If you can't use that I'm not sure of another solution.
 
Yeah I think I bricked it. The unroot method would not work, so I attempted to flash the stock rom. I went through all the steps in the rooting for dummies guide (ie: superwipe, clearing the cashe's, and flashed from the sd w/ Odexed). I followed all of the steps and now the phone won't boot. It boots twice and goes back into recovery on the second boot. Tried to restore w/ nandroid and it says "couldn't open directory. Am I screwed?

ok so what hboot do you have? and do you have s-on or s-off? power off then press and hold power+vol down.
 
yes ok you have amon ra as your recovery that is good as well. so go into recovery and

1.wipe dalvik cache, cache, system, and data. do that 3 times just to be on the safe side.
2.next select flash zip from sd card.
3.locate the superwipe file and flash it
4.locate your rom and flash it.
5.reboot

you may want to start with a fresh new file for the rom you want to flash.

Okay. The superwipe file is saved as "META-INF/" I select that and get the option to select "com/". After selecting that I get "google/" then "android/". After selecting all these files it does nothing reverts back to "Choose zip to apply menu"? Not sure what to do from here.

sounds like you extracted the file. anything you flash needs to stay zipped and not extracted.

All I did was download and drag and drop from my downloads to the sd. But its possible since I have no idea what i'm doing. BTW, the ROM file does the same, it opens everything. If I were to remove the sd from the phone and put it in a PC could I delete the old files and try the process over? Any other suggestions to fix?

yes you can delete the files and start over.

what computer do you have? if it is a mac ( i do not have one) but i think that they automatically unzips the files.
