Root Unroot, reflash, re-root?

Ok, my rooted EVO (HBOOT 2.10, running rooted stock 2.3.3 at the moment) has completely stopped vibrating despite flashing a couple different ROMs and doing full wipes each time. My Sprint store says they can probably fix it without replacing the phone, so I'll be taking it there soon.

Obviously I'm assuming that I need to unroot and reflash stock OTA before then just in case they see S-OFF and decide to not help me. I'm also assuming that it's possible they'll still simply replace the phone and I'll just have to wait along with everyone else that has HBOOT 2.14. However, if they DO just repair the phone, I'm thinking the following procedure should let me re-root the phone right away since I don't have the newer HBOOT:

1. nandroid backup
2. Run Unrevoked S-ON
3. Flash latest 2.2 OTA (3.70.651.1)
4. Turn automatic update checking OFF before heading to Sprint
5. If they repair the phone (and hopefully not update it) run Unrevoked to get S-OFF back
6. Restore nandroid?

Would someone care to check my work on this? I've been through the Rooting for Dummies thread so I'm assuming this should work. Thanks in advance.

why not change step 3 to "flash rooted 4.24"

don't give them a reason to update it... and they won't update it

don't forget to wipe your sd card ;)

I have had two techs actually look through my sd card for root apps

Wouldn't the presence of the Superuser app draw some attention? For that matter, can I even flash a rooted ROM with S-ON?

you remove su from the rom prior to flashing it, flash the rom, then flash s-on

looks like they have it already packaged up and ready to go in the link provided above

Thanks for all the advice, but I ended up sticking with my original plan. Unrooting took a little longer than I anticipated since I didn't realize I had to downgrade my radio before running the Unrevoked S-ON tool. Once I did that, S-ON worked on the first try and I was able to flash it back to 2.2. They did give me my phone back and I rerooted, restored my Nandroid, and reflashed the newest radio without issue.
