Root Unrooting EVO

if i understand the unrooting process correctly, it's just like flashing a new rom. you will loose data but, apps stored on your sd card will remain and contacts will be there also, as long as you sync with your pc and/or gmail... just re-sync after unroot... BTMK... :)

EDIT - by "just like flashing a new rom" i mean you'll loose data, as you would flashing a new rom.. that's the similarity i was going for...

yeah not sure why you want to unroot, but yes you will pretty much loose everything. data will definitely be wiped. your apps and its data will be gone but you can get app list backup and it will keep a list for you so that when you unroot you can you that list to download them from the market again. and as far as your contacts go as long as they are synched with google rather then your phone then you are good to go. once unrooted just log back into google and your contacts will be back.

but seriously why do you want to unroot. if you need help understanding something we can help you out.

I used Unrevoked3 and now I want to do the OTA update. My phone locked up while trying to do the update. That is why I want to unroot, but I hate to lose text message history and apps. What else is stored on the phone and is there a way to back up text messages and other data prior to unrooting?

You do not need to unroot to update to the OTA rom. You will have to do it manually though so you do not lose root. You can use SMS backup and restore for sms messages(I use it) and Titanium backup for apps if you are going to stay rooted.

You can find the latest rooted stock rom here. Download the odex version.

If you are set on unrooting, you should know that once you accept the OTA and it upgrades your hboot version, you may not be able to reroot at all. There is currently no root exploit for the Evo 4g with hboot version 2.16. To unroot, follow the directions in the Rooting for Dummies guide under "after rooting"

what rom are you on right now? if you are a stock rom, i believe that you can just flash the gingerbread rooted ota and all you need to do is wipe dalvik cache and cache. that way all of your data will be saved and you will be updated.

go sms messaging will save your messages to your sd card. and yes all of your data in the apps as well as you apps will be gine. however you can download them from the market again by using app list backup. but if you stay rooted you can use titanium backup pro which will backup your apps and your data. however, it will not backup your messages or your contacts.

also just so you know, the gingerbread ota is not all that it is cracked up to be. just check the support and troubleshooting forums and see what people are thinking about the ota. we have way better roms that have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. these are things that our evo's will never get. i would start out and try mikg2.41 and synergy rc2.

Oh man, whatever you do don't unroot and take the ota lol, well lemme rephrase that. Do whatever you like but be aware of the fact that its ill advised lol so many people have had such bad experiences with the new ota update that it leads me to believe that HTC is seriously rethinking the new ROM they released
