Root Unrooting guide?

Rxpert83

Dr. Feelgood
What happened to the unrooting information in the gingerbread for dummies guide? It got really complicated all of a sudden.

I have the files for getting S-ON and the RUU downloaded to my PC via the prior methods outlined but now it all looks completely different.

I am trying to unroot my fathers EVO. I am doing it over the phone with him which is a PITA but we managed to get S-ON using the PC36IMG file but the RUU isnt recognizing his phone. No problem, I'll send him the other PC36IMG file that does the same thing.....nope. Its gone from the guide.

Any help?

Long story short..... S-ON, RUU wont recognize, need the PC36IMG file. His H-boot is 6.16 and radio is 2.15.00.08.08

yeah i changed the guide a little bit. it seems that for some the hex edited 6.17 file was not working right. it will work better if you have the radio 2.15.00.11.19. i also added the android flasher to it in the hope that it will be easier for some as people get hung up on the renaming part a lot.

and sorry for the ruu. i changed it.

you can still run the ruu.exe as well.

The whole shootin' match in that one zip? Yee haw!

alrighty then, reckon I will pass on that! I'll dl and save it for an emergency though. Thanks!

Just curious about this file. If I were to run it, with s-off as i have, what would it do to my phone?

It will Unroot s-on, stock rom, stock recovery, stock everything before the newest update
Not so. It's just a stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM. It'll unroot you, but it won't affect NAND status.

Yeah, it won't do you any good - See above. Sorry! :)

@Rxpert
The reason the unrooting guide changed is because for some EVOs, the hex-edited HBOOT file alone doesn't re-lock NAND. So, in an effort to have a method that works for everyone, the addition of the Radio downgrade was added, so that, if the HBOOT flash doesn't work, the unrevoked S-ON zip can be used to easily re-lock NAND.

The process actually isn't that complicated. I apologize for the 4shared links, and I didn't realize they require you to register first (though it is free). I understand the annoyance. I'll try and look into moving them (perhaps to Dev-Host, but they were having trouble at the time). I had to move the original links that pointed to my Dropbox, because it got suspended due to excessive traffic.

I've done the process myself several times, and it takes me less than 5 minutes if I have all the files downloaded already. Sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused you :o.

Let me see if i understand that. It does not have superuser, so it won't have root access? But I would still have s-off?

So If I were to just flash superuser again, it would be rooted again with that rom? Just stock?

TIA.

ruu's are basically stock roms with stock recoveries. they do not touch your nand so you will still have s-off. you will not have a custom recovery.

Not a good way to have a stock rom, huh? :p

But, if one had flashed that zip, could they flash a custom recovery and flash superuser and be good to go? Would the stock recovery let you do that?

I never get involved in trying to give advice on this stuff because I haven't ever unrooted. Hope I don't have to. lol. Not THAT bored... :)

I wasn't clear in the OP, the ruu.exe file wasn't working so I needed the one that returned him to stock rom and recovery through bootloader.

Is that the one linked above?

I appreciate the explanation of why it changed. That was the other piece of the puzzle that I was missing. The old guide was very straightforward: download these two things and update through bootloader. I was just wondering why it changed.

that is one way of doing it i guess. you can run the ruu and then flash a custom recovery to get back to stock but be rooted. but it is just easier to flash a rooted stock rom then to do it that way.

I heard that, just wanted to make sure what was going on and what could be done. thanks for the info. I wouldn't go through all that trouble to get a stock rom, don't worry about that. :D
