Update of Android 2.1

I doubt this has much to do with it. HTC must have had the 2.1 release for quite a while now as the Nexus is an HTC device running 2.1. It is probably taking them quite some effort to get the Sense version integrated (which already had a lot of the features in 2.1 such as linking with Facebook accounts).
 
I read that the 2.1 Os has been streamlined to be faster on phones with the 528mhz processor. I think people are assuming that because it has a higher number it will be more resource hungry?

Think Windows 7, a newer operating system than Vista, but runs MUCH better on slower or older machines than Vista ever has...

I don't think the 2.1 OS will cause any slow down. If anything it should be slicker, and personally I can't wait for the update, but i'd personally go the official route rather than rooting my phone.

okay, but:

Performance (as in user experience) is layered
1. machine
2. OS
3. UI
4. apps

to keep it simple

The OS may be optimized for the machine but when you're then starting to run apps designed for bigger machines the performance as a user experience goes down the drain. (exaggerated)
So technically you are completely right, the users are the ones who are kidding themselves.

e.g. W7 runs perfectly on a pentium 4 with minimum requirements, but will Creative Suite 4 perform as well as on a dual core mean machine?
 
While this argument is staying friendly (and congrats for that, no one else managed it yet so far!) it isn't really going anywhere. No one knows how well it will perform (i.e improved speed or reduced) until it actually arrives.

Hopefully we won't have too long to wait to find out! :D
 
Does anybody know if the keyboard will be changed, layout, spacing ect? I posted on another thread that the Hero keyboard is the only reason I'd get shot of my Hero.

I'm really not that bothered about the 2.1 update I'm far more interested in the real Flash 10.

As far as I've read in reviews (and in my personal opinion too) the keyboard is the best part of the sense ui, so I doubt they will be changing it in any way anytime soon
 
The keyboard was one of the main factors that made me get the hero. Never liked them on other touch screen phones but on this its so easy to use.

Er...what? The keyboard is the standard Android keyboard isn't it??

And I believe 2.x has improved the keyboard layout to allow faster typing with two hands
 
Thanks for the replies, my old iphone had a better keyboard, but my Hero is head and shoulders above the iphone I just can't stand the keyboard, in fact if I can get my hands on a Nexus and the keyboard is better I'll change phones even if it means losing money, and I'm a Scotsman!!

Is there any screenshots kicking about of the 2.1 update? I've had a search but couldn't find anything.

I have the HTC Hero and I love it I am getting impatient in waiting for 2.1 I hope this 2.1 will make yahoo messenger better. I would love to see people icon pictures.

Sadly, we're all still on 1.5 and waiting. But given that 3 just got the updated ROM to 2.73.x last week, I wouldn't be holding my breath for a 2.1 Android update anytime soon if I were on 3. Or even anytime soon after the rest of us get 2.1.

I hope for your sake I'm wrong though...
 
Does anyone else think it is unlikely we would get the 2.1 update on the Hero before the new Bravo/Legend handsets are out at the earliest? Surely HTC will be putting all their efforts into the new products, and commercially why would they want to release the latest update for an old product whilst trying to encourage everyone to rush out and get the newer version on the latest handset? I guess there will still be a load of customers who have the Hero who won't upgrade as soon as the new sets are out, but will that bother HTC if there are enough new customers and "must have" upgraders in the short term?

Am I too cynical?
 
Well, according to HTC Benelux, the 2.1 update will be released in mid-March. Whether that is before or after the release of the Legend (also due in March) remains to be seen, but it wouldn't surprise me.
 
Don't ask my why but I actually get the feeling its coming and it's coming soon. Mid - March would suit me fine but I am still waiting to hear about Flash 10. I sometimes wonder if it'll ever show up, considering I bought the phone because I was told it was Flash capable, which is clearly isn't.
