Root update stuff yet again

in a previous post got this advice about updates:
"Never accept an ota because it could seriously mess up your phone. You are rooted so all you need to do is flash an updated rom."
not sure what flash an updated rom means? something like get the latest rom that would 'go' with an ota update, and by flashing that would give me benefits of an ota update without the downside risk? I have been to the rom page and its not real clear which would be the rom to flash for my phone and its current versions? and how to evaluate what rom would be good/worthwhile to flash. my phone is evo sprint 4g flashed to boost 3g, i did not do the flash to boost. currently at 2.6.35.10 build 4.54.651.1 which I rooted myself
also
per the previous post i turned off the auto htc update but still get these update messages, there are 3:
1. CHECKING FOR FIRMWARE UPDATE PLEASE WAIT
2. THE FIRMWARE UPDATE COULD NOT BE COMPLETED .....ERROR CODE 1012
3. ERROR CODE 67 UNABLE TO ESTABLISH WIRELESS CONNECTION.....
they are getting to be annoying, evidently these are not the HTC updates I turned off? anyway to tell what they are for and how to turn them off as well as the HTC?

i would just flash another rom. most custom roms have the update checker turned off.

as of right now the latest ota is 4.67. if you really want to be current (you really do not have to be. you can be on froyo if you like.), then you just need to flash the any rom that has been updated to 4.67. mikg3.1 just got updated to the latest ota but that is found in a different section of the rom/kernel download page under gingerbread 2.3.3 + sense2.1.

however you are flashed to boost so not sure really how all of that will affect your phone. but i think it should be ok.

Unfortunately, I am not flashed to boost and really do not have a whole lot of knowledge as to what issues you could run into when flashing a new ROM (I've identified it as a place of improvement, I'll be following this thread in order to hopefully learn something).

I can explain a little bit more about OTA's though.

OTA's do more than just update your ROM. They have the potential to update your H-boot and also your recovery. When HTC/Sprint updates an H-boot they ususally close off the vulnerabilities we use in order to gain root access. If you accept an OTA it could unroot you and you are not able to root again unless someone finds a new method.

HTC has given us a root method for the newest OTA, but theres been a LOT of people on here recently who tried to accept the OTA and had various issues as a result of doing so.

You can simply flash a ROM with the updated pieces (someone else put the new files from the OTA in it without it affecting your H-boot) and you maintain root that way.

Dang, ninja'd by ocn :D

I am assuming that the error your getting is that the phone is rooted so the firmware won't update. Or it has something to do with boost even though its on the sprint network I'm sure they have something that tells them what "company and phones" should be Legal on these lines and since your EVO is not under Boost authorized phones its probably giving an error for that.

You should be safe to update the ROM as it does not mess with the Radio's that were flashed for you to get on the boost portion of the network. However I'm not sure how they flash it over if its ROM and Radio's or something else added or not.

Please keep us informed :)

hi all, thanks for all the replies, have been to flashing site and still wondering how to pick any given flash? just read the details and see if it sounds good and/or adds something I need or want?
no way to really check say if for this kernel, with this build, etc that it is ok?
I liked the features of the [ROM][2.3.5][4.67] Nitrous v1.3.5
if the new rom has problems or just not what I wanted I should be able to return to current rom from my backup?

If the new Rom has problems you can go to your backup if you make a Nandroid.

The Nitrous Rom seems nice. A Member here liked it a lot and said it ran very well with good battery life on the stock kernel.

So just make a Nandroid in Recovery and be sure to wipe your Cache, Dalvik cache, and Data before flashing the new one. Alos running the ZZSuperwipe is a good idea.

yep nandroid backups are your friend, remember that. always perform one before flashing or doing anything to alter your evo that way if anything goes wrong or if you do not like what you did then you can always go back.

i have not tried nitrous either, but it does look good. and yes just read the op for each rom as there might be special instructions or tips. it will also show if there are any known bugs or issues. and if you can try and follow the thread as well though that can be very tedious as there can be 1000 posts or more. but, you can sometimes get valuable info on the rom as people may find major flaws in the rom. let us know how you like this rom.
