Root [Updated 11-20-12][BOOTLOADER][Windows][VS920]Bootloader Pwnage Tool for the LG Spectrum 4G

I have personally never had to do a cab flash so I wouldn't be able to do much good for you on a step by step for noobs... sorry.

That's OK, it really is. Anything anyone can tell me helps. It is just that I have read the post with all the links to perform a CAB flash. Evidently performing a CAB flash deletes your recovery partition. THAT can be a problem, I imagine.
I am NOT an expert by any means. However, if that partition disappears, I imagine I will end up with an expensive paperweight. Thanks for your reply, and keep in touch.

I've been flashing ROMs on this phone for over a year, probably at least weekly, and have only had to CAB once. Didn't even really have to, just wanted a clean stock install. Honestly I wouldn't worry about figuring that out at this point, if you're thinking you might just want to go back to stock at some point because you prefer it to the custom ROMs then just make a backup in CWM first. Then you can just restore that and still be rooted and unlocked.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I want to learn everything I can, and record the instructions/place all the needed files on my PC. I am just a security blanket kind of guy. Want to be prepared.
I understand what you are saying. But I am not even sure of the steps for flashing a ROM correctly, although I feel I can figure it out. It seems easy. And believe me, I REALLY doubt I will ever want to go back to a stock ROM. (LOL) But it can't hurt to know how. My phone is my daily driver, and I never want to brick it. Need to have it working, but I can't stand the stock ROM. I would just hate to go through procedures for the PWNAGE tool, and end up stuck with no alternatives. Know what I mean?
Before I jump off the cliff, I want to make sure I can swim. :D

HELLO EVERYONE! I feel better now, ran the tool, it was FAST!! Fastest install of a program on ANY OS I've ever worked with. Doing .TAR backup right now. Thanks to everyone for putting up with me these past weeks!!! NOW, onto a custom ROM. I think CM10.1.2 looks good to me.

One question for anyone out there listening. When I flash CM10.1.2, which version of GAPPS should I use with it? I've looked, but don't really see anything except that I should install GAPPS. I didn't realize there were several versions of it, and want to make sure I flash the correct version. THANKS AGAIN!!! Talk to you soon.

Thanks so much, downloaded the suggested version of GAPPS, put it on SD card, did checksum on files, ready to go!
One thing I've noticed since running PWNAGE. Whenever I turn on or reboot the phone, the system interrogates (checks) my SD card, and it takes longer than ever to do so. Could that be a sign of a problem? I wouldn't think so, but it seems a LITTLE weird. :confused:
And like I said previously, when I turn on GPS, it looks for and finds satellites QUICKLY, whereas before running PWNAGE, I couldn't get ONE satellite. (not complaining). For a while I thought I was never going to get a GPS fix; read in many posts about the Spectrum having a GPS problem, but my problem seems to have been fixed somehow.

That happened sometimes on stock, shouldn't happen anymore on a custom ROM.
 
Yesterday I checked out the zip file but it seemed to be incomplete.....thought maybe I needed to join the forum....but today the server page with the zip file will not load....just hoping I am not alone.....must be a server issue..

OK....I went through with this....guess I have cm10.1.2 and I suppose Gaaps 4.2....but I'm not sure... I have a screenful and a couple installed apps...I figured this was the result of the Gaaps install....I wiped the phone during the rom overwrite...
So I am kinda stuck now..... So there isn't a playstore icon and I have navigated to it via web but the installs don't seem to take....kinda unsure where to go at this point....would like to get back to getting a few of my apps back...

Close 60 years old and reading that rom flash info with bifocals isn't easy.....lol...
 
Hey I tried this and it seemed to work but now my phone won't turn on. It's black. I can't go into recovery, and it won't turn on.

Turns out I tried this on my Lucid. How do I unbrick my phone?
 
Hi Everyone,

I had rooted my phone earlier and then used the LG Update tool to reinstall stock on it. I just had a few questions. Last time I rooted the device, the tool broke 4G. Does that still happen? If so, how do I avoid losing 4G, but still have an ClockwordMod Recovery?

On battery, is the battery on cyanogenmod 10.1 or 10.2 good? Also, what would the best 4.2 rom be for stability and for battery?

Root portion of this worked for me after second attempt (I shut down and disconnected all PDAnet stuff, I think thats what caused it to not work first time). When I moved on to the second portion, it keeps getting hung up on "remounting /system".

I wasn't sure what to do because I did not want to stop it or remove the phone if there was some sort of transfer still occuring. Ended up having to and have tried it multiple times same result. Seems to have broken my ability to USB tether and to turn on Wifi.

I'm going to keep trying to run it until it goes all the way through the script.
 
In case anyone else was having same issue I resolved it by factory resetting first before doing this script. I think by not having any tether programs installed it worked perfectly the first go around.
 
Quick synopsis on what has happened:

LG Spectrum VS920 - stock 4.0.4 with ZV9 update.

Extracted to C:\, configured the android for debug, and internet → modem, then plugged it in. Ran the .bat file, everything seemed to go fine, and it rebooted a few times. The .bat file started over again, so I thought at the time that it was done. I unplugged, checked around, and saw that Super User was successfully installed. Switched on Root Explorer in ES File Explorer, and it did prompt for SU access.

Downloaded Rom Manager, and it did not detect CWM installed. I read through this topic again and found out I should've run through the .bat file again, selecting YES when it asks if I am rooted.

Did so, and it did run through the rest successfully. There were 2 errors at the end where it said it could not find a directory, not sure if that is normal. I got the message at the end with programmer info, I hit the "any" key, and it disappeared. Figured at this point, it was now complete.

I launched ROM Manager again and it still said I needed a custom recovery. This time, I selected the option that I already had it, and chose the 3.X+ option. It then seemed to detect my version, but not very accurately, see screenshot below.

I am able to use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery. SU gave an error that it suddenly stopped right before shutting down, but I was able to get into recovery, backup using .tar format (which I read was more stable), and reboot the phone.

My question is:

ROM Manager shows that there's a newer version. I do believe I've seen both comments in this thread: to use ROM Manager to install CWM, and not to. With this screenshot, can you advise if I should allow ROM Manager to try and upgrade?

You typically need to run the batch file once to root, then once to unlock.

If it's not detecting CWM on the phone, run it again and tell it that you're already rooted.
 
Tried that, and it does show that 5.x.x.x is installed. It shows there's an upgrade to 6.0.4.5 available, wondering if it is safe to install it through Rom Manager?

I've attached a screenshot of it.
