Root Updates (removing root, etc)

Hey guys....

Been a good while since i've tinkered with my HTC Evo 4G at all...

Last I know, I ran a root utility which went through the motions of rooting my phone, etc.

I've been having issues with the phone lately...and have constantly got messages about updates being available for the phone, but I cannot download or install them...

The following is what I get when booting with power + vol down..

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
Oct 15 2010,12:07:00

I'm not concerned too much about rooting, or unrooting...I just would like to be up to date on software updates..and hardware too if there has been any...

Any sort of advice/guidance on how to get up to date will be extremely appreciated.

I've spent the last 8 hours working on an engineering design project and my head is so fried I can't figure out what all I need to do from the forum posts I read through.

Welcome to the Forums!
If you get anymore OTA update messages, do not accept them.
You can flash a rom that will have the updates in them...
Let me take a minute to move you on over to the root forums where there will be more help ok.?:)

Well if it won't bother you to lose root I say go for it.

On the other hand if you want to keep root, don't accept or it will break root and you will need to re root all over again.

Well..the issue is - it won't let me download the updates.

My assumption has been that it is because of the root process I went through..

Don't want to just download something and go running it on the phone if it is going to brick it...

What kind of ROM can I download/run on my phone? There seems to be so many I have no clue what to even attempt to try..and I don't wanna go losing my contacts and what not...

Again, thanks for the advice or guidance..much appreciated.

Here is a list that has another list of roms made for our phones.
Some roms are not made for our phones and will surely make your phone act funky if you tried.
If you need some more assistance with info about flashing a rom, no problem.
If you follow directions carefully, your rom flash will go nicely.
It is not as bad as you think about bricking your phone...the surefire way to brick it, is to pull the battery while flashing radios...which we rarely do.
Do you know what recovery you have?
You can find out by going into your bootloader screen, then highlighting the recovery option and selecting it.
Amon ra or smelkus recoveries are the best and recommended here.
:)

Edit: crap..didn't post the list link...sorry

yes as a genral rule for rooted devices:
never accept any OTA's. they could have adverse affect on your phone. usually new ota's will patch any previous exploits that was used to gain root on your device.

if you were to accept the ota, it could unroot you and thus leaving you with no way of re-rooting the phone. you will have to wait til the devs come out with a new way to root it. and with each new ota, rooting will get more complicated. luckily with the last few ota's, this is not the case.

the other thing that i have seen it do when people accept an ota, is that it could keep root but you will have s-on which is a weird state to be in.

so never ever accept an ota. all an ota is just updated software which is what roms are. all you need to do is flash a rom that has the latest ota cooked in. the devs are pretty quick with coming out with rooted stock roms based off of the ota's so never fear about not being updated.

Welp, seem to have scrooged myself one way or another.

I installed the stock 5.07.651.1 ROM as mentioned in the thread...

I had errors with "force close" apps...and anytime I tried to type a txt or anything else..it would just put out q's instead of anything else.

So I put recoverymod back on and tried to use another ROM (cleared data, cache etc...)

And now I can't get any ROM to get me past the first white screen with the htc EVO 4G logo on it...that or it gets to that screen then keeps rebooting back to it repeatedly.

Anyone know what I can do to fix this? :/

What recovery do you have?
What are you wiping prior to the rom flash?

I am using ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.2

And I am/was doing the wipe data/factory reset...cache partition, as well as dalvik cache...

Well, from what I have read here over and over, clockwork stinks at wiping properly. So for now, to get your phone up, I would wipe boot, data, system, caches, sd-ext, sd-android_secure (or something like that), factory reset, etc, and wipe it all 3 times. But...DO NOT WIPE THE SD CARD ITSELF....I know, caps but it is important not to wipe the sd card....that's where the rom to be flashed is.

So, either try to flash that rom again, (after wiping alot), or we can try another rom, nice rom, such as MikG3.11...

After all is said and done, we can change your recovery.:)

Thanks for the guidance...

I went ahead and did as you advised and wiped everything multiple times...

Trying to flash the ROM again..we'll see what happens...

Well, a super big thanks to you sir!

I guess like you said, it wasn't wiping properly...

I flashed the smurf mod rom and it is up and running..will try this out for a while and see if I like it.

Thanks a million!

Freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!
I just tried that rom when it just updated! but have not since his last couple small updates!!!
Just to let you know there are some things that don't work on that rom such as 4g or front facing camera and I think Netflix...not sure, but just read the op..:)

Yeah, I saw those issues....which really don't affect me...

I've never used 4G..don't think i'm really ever in an area to get it..

Front facing camera i've used once since i've had the phone lol...

Netflix...nope :P

But thanks for bringing those up - so far I like the ROM.

Appeals to my eye and seems to be pretty fast.
