Root Updating Question

RickDod3

Newbie
Ok first off let me start by saying I am a total NOOB at rooting...

Anyway, my question is:

I just rooted my phone using Gingerbread, I have NOT installed anything to the phone since then (No roms, etc.)... So from the knowledge ive got from reading that means I have a Stock Rom (I Guess?) So I was just curious if it was safe to update my phone?

the update says:

System Upgrade 4.54.651.1- This new software contains an important security update. HTC strongly urges you to immediately download and install the update.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can install a new rom and not have to worry about it. The update erases the apk that allows apps to look at emails, messages, and social networks.

Do NOT accept OTA's.

If you want the new update, there is already a stock rom with the updates built into it. You simply flash that.

Or...

You can flash a custom ROM that also already has the updates built in and you get the free hacked hotspot and other perks such as upgraded sense versions and removed bloat.

If you want to dabble in this I would suggest checking out MikG 2.59 found here: [ROM] - [MikRoms] - [10/17/2011] - MikG v2.58 - Re-Engineered GB Sense 2.1 + 3.0 - xda-developers

If you look it over and decide it is something you would like to try, let us know and we can walk you through the proper steps to flash it.

So basically I should ignore the update and just install a new rom?

As the previous poster mentioned do not accept OTA's anymore. You should have that unchecked if you ask me. I would just update it to a new rom because you get all that bloatware off your system, gives you more space for your own apps, and much more customizable. Also I'm a flashaholic so I know the steps for putting a new rom on the phone. I always switch between CM7 and MikG because they are the best (my opinion). Plenty of people here will help you through the process. Plenty of youtube video walkthroughs that can help. It's all your choice but remember to do a backup and save all your apps and messages with either Titanium Backup or Mybackup root.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so when you root (via unrevoked or revolutionary) you are basically using an exploit to get your phone's security turned off (turning s-on to s-off) so that you can unlock your nand and gain permission to read and write onto your system partitions (flashing, mods, and themes). with out that exploit you will never gain root.

so what happens when there is an ota? well an ota has the potential to close the exploit, change the hboot(boatloader), or even unroot you. and the problem is if you are unrooted then there is a possibilty that you will have to wait for the devs to find a new exploit.

like when the gingerbread update was out, many people accepted the ota and they had to wait (i think) 3-4 months before the devs was able to re-gain root. and from what i read finding it was not as easy and it could get harder as time goes by if the revolutionary exploit gets closed by another ota.

fortunately this ota from what others have reported does not change the hboot or have any effect on the exploit. but just to create good habits, lets not accept this ota. just flash a rom that has it. or like rxpert says flash the mikg2.59 rom.

and one last thing this will apply to all phones. so if you move on and get another phone and you plan on rooting it, just refrain from accepting the ota's.

I've decided to go with MikG V 2.9...I like the fact that it is somewhat stock and it still has the hotspot which is the only reason I really wanted to root my evo in the first place

Let us know how it goes.

Do you know the flashing procedure?

Nandroid/backup apps

Wipe Dalvik Cache, Cache, Data at least once each ( I'd suggest 3x)
Flash Superwipe (optional)
Flash ROM
Flash Kernel (optional)
Reboot

Everything went smooth, I used the tutorial on here it went very well!

yeah mikg is waaaaay better then stock. i really like all of his roms. you should also check out his mik3d rom as well. it is full sense 3.0 that just rocks!!!!!! and it is out of beta finally (though his beta actually could really be called a final as i never had any issue or bugs on that rom).

Flashed this tonight and its really nice! I've had issues in the past with 3.0+ ROMS getting very laggy after a fwe days so we will see how it goes. So far I'm really liking it though. May have finally found a daily replacement for MikG (even though essentially theres not much difference)
