Help Updating T-Mobile G2 firmware

Have you checked what speed the router is using (needs to be b or g). Are you sure the SSID is not hidden (the laptop may already have settings and is therefore able to see it). Are the router settings for security limited to only send SSID to pre-defined list of devices?
Why is your hero on Android 1.5? version 2.1 may help?

I have got T-mobile G2 touch. I think I am on 1.76? Have you got an insight where I can upgrade to 2.1?
Many thanks,
S

Me too. Mine updated months ago to 2.1 update 1. This is an OTA or Wifi update (but I guess OTA is your only option right now :(). Go into your menu and prompt an update search (yours may not be set to check regularly by default)

Thanks dca860, Do you know where on the phone I can ask the phone to look for the update? My apologies for being so unfamiliar about this? Actually, I enabled auto download firmware update but nothing has happened? Can I ask it to do it immediately?
Many thanks,
Solar

Can't recall exactly as my menu is now different but pretty sure it is as per manual and there is an option to 'check now' somewhere in the same bit as your auto update selection.
It is a 2 stage update (ie: down part 1 and re-boot, then download part 2).
Make sure your contacts directory is google based and not just on the phone or you'll likely lose it.

Hi there,
The firmware on my phone say 1.5 and I don't see any option of 'check now'. Will check the manual at home.
Thanks,
S

Not sure!
In my phone (BIM it is 2.1)
Under 'About Phone' I have a list of options starting with System Software updates.
I click System Software updates and get one option for Scheduled check with a tick box but at the bottom of the screen there is a smaller button with 'check now' on it. I'd swear I had something very similar before too.

Thru other posts, I came across this- T-Mobile - Help & Support

Seems mine can't be updated thru air?
Thanks,
Solar

If yours is a Touch 2 (T-mobile version of a Hero) then I doubt you have different software to others. The link you included is not relating to this phone
Short of physically looking at your phone I'm not sure I can assist further. Worst case, you can download via the update USB and then install.
Good luck and update the forum

Just reset the phone to factory setting. Still I don't see anything to update. Very frustrating.

How can you do this- 'you can download via the update USB and then install.'

Has your phone been hacked in any way?
Assuming not, read this one:
HERE

I still cannot fathom why you cannot follow this though. Something looks like it is not standard. I am now wondering if you have had an after-market hack to enable use with other networks and this has intentionally blocked updates (preventing the lock from becoming re-introduced).
The following should be available to you:
##

Update your software

To update your Hero over the air:

Go to All Applications
Tap Settings > About Phone > System Updates > HTC Software Update
Select Check Now
Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update
Note: If the HTC Software Update is not visible on your phone, continue to the computer download instructions below.

_____
To update your Hero through computer download:

Important Note: Installing the 2.27.651.5 update will delete all the data and information on your phone. You will lose contacts that have not been synced to an email account, text messages that have not been forwarded, saved voicemail messages older than 5 days, voicemails older than 20 days that have not been listened to, and call history. The calendar and email settings will also revert back to factory defaults. Pictures, music, videos and files are stored on your microSD memory card, which should be removed before updating your phone.

Before you start the download, make sure:

You back up your data
To save important text messages, forward them to an email address:
Tap the Applications tab and then tap Messaging
Select the text message you want to save and hard press it; you will see a menu to Forward the message
Any installed applications downloaded from the Android market must be re-installed. To re-download applications:
Tap the Applications tab and then tap Market
If prompted, sign in with your Google account credentials
Tap My Downloads
You will see paid applications in the list shown
Take note of the free applications on your phone, as they will have to be searched for again and downloaded manually after the update
Your Hero has a fully-charged battery
You have the USB data cable that came with your Hero
You have closed all running applications on your computer and disabled standby and hibernation modes
You have installed HTC Sync on your computer
Go to HTC's support site
Click on the Download link for HTC Sync
Select Run in the dialog box and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation

To download the update software, go to our HTC Hero download site
Download the RUU ROM Update Utility and save it to your computer desktop
Double click the .exe file and click Run in Windows XP or Yes in Windows 7
On the Welcome Screen, be sure to read the caution message and Read Me file; check the box next to I understand and click Next
On the next screen, follow the steps listed and click Next
You will see the message Verifying information on your Android phone. Please wait…
Once the verification is finished, you will see current information about your Hero such as model ID, image version and language; click Update to proceed
The screen will show information about the update; to continue, click Next
You will receive a confirmation message that you are ready to update your Hero and the approximate time it will take; click Next to begin the update installation. Note: It is very important that you do not remove the USB cable or launch any programs during the update installation.
The update is complete when you see the message Congratulations! Your ROM update has been completed. Your Android phone is now ready for use.; click Finish to exit
Your Hero will reboot and be ready for set up

Guys,

(a) You only get a "Check for software updates" option with Android 2.1.

(b) To receive FOTA updates from 1.5 to 2.1 your handset needs to have the most recent 1.5 firmware installed. See here.

Thank you, will update the firmware as both of you have suggested. What does FOTA mean?
Many thanks,

Firmware delivered Over The Air.

i.e. You download the firmware from HTC via the phone, rather than having to install it via a PC.

You sure?
I updated mine manually - but then again I think I may have been on 1.6 so perhaps that had the prompt available?

There are four OTA updates available once you have the most recent 1.5 RUU installed. The first was still 1.5 and introduced the check for updates button. The second was 2.1, as 1.6 was never available for the hero.

Mine 1.5 seems to be oldest then. I don't see any update option and in 1 year 3 months, I have never updated or was prompted to update. The phone was bough in Nov 2009.
Thanks
Solar

OK, I updated and it said congratulation etc on completion
I used the http://androidforums.com/hero-suppo...053-current-rom-builds-versions-gsm-hero.html

Firmware still 1.5
Build number 2.73.110.26

Now, what does this mean? Am I on the latest android -2.1?

I still don't see the option to 'system updates' for OTA?

Can somebody help please.
Many thanks

Very hard to assist without an 'eyes-on'.
If you do not have a 'check now' option at the bottom of the Settings > About Phone > System Updates > HTC Software Updates screen then I am struggling too.
Again, if you can download the latest firmware on to your SD card via the sync lead, you can manually upgrade to 2.1 in the same way you have already updated your 1.5 (apparently).
If you get really stuck and wish to post it to me I'll take a look (PM me) but I'm sure that shouldn't be necessary as this forum is full of tips and the chances of you being alone with any problem is remote.

Hi mate,
Where do I download this 'download the latest firmware on to your SD'? Is it not the same as the one I already did from here HTC Hero - ROM upgrade for HTC Hero (T-Mobile G2 )

This is what I downloaded and applied. This has increased by build number but not firmware number. I assume upgrading firmware number is upgrading Android?

Now, can you please help me out with this ?
Many thanks,
Solar

You're still not on the latest which is
Android 2.1
Build 3.31.110.1 (the 3.31 being the build and the 110.1 being the customised T-Mobile bit).

I have seen on another site, your option to check for updates may be here:
GOTO SETTINGS>DEVICE INFO>UPGRADE> SCAN NOW.

Thanks, Device info doesn't show up once I go to settings? Is my phone really weird?
