Root Upgrade to Stock Froyo 2.2 Guide (Includes Root instructions)

Quick question, if i root my unlocked t-mobile phone, if it goes t*ts up what options do i have, can i take it back to htc or t-mobile?

thanks

If you can reflash your original firmware then you can take it back - although then you wouldn't need to. If you completely brick it, you're on your own.

Lekky,

Here's what I get when I try to access my Settings>Sounds. Any clues? No matter how much I try, I can't get to it. Could it be a Locale Plugin thing? I know that before, some of my Locale Plugins affected the Settings>Applications>Manage Applications (causing it to FC). I wonder - I have so many apps that taking them off one-by-one would kill me.

Also, I get this random message every so often. Any clues? I never got this on 2.1.

And lastly, I was trying the Chrome to Phone app and found that it doesn't work. Does it work for anyone else? I have it registered, downloaded the latest version of Chrome, the apk and extension. EDIT: Chrome-to-phone works, but it only loaded when I got on mobile network (not wifi). Odd, but still can be useful.

I'm abit confused.

I'm currently running a 2.1 vanilla rom after de-branding from orange, but from what I can read I've got to unlock my phone before trying to flash to 2.2? I've got my unlock code, but how can I prompt my phone into asking me for this code before I flash?

Anybody having issues with their optical trackball? Mine works for about half an hour, but then it stops. I don't know if it's program related, but I am trying to monitor that. Just wondering if anyone else had the same issue.

Just saw that any button push will turn on the phone in Froyo. NOT what I want as it easily wakes in my pocket now. Any way to disable that?

Oh, and Chrome-To-Phone works now - had to reboot to get it to work for wifi. There's also a Firefox extension that does the same (yay).

Lastly, I removed the following warning by deleting a few apps - some live wall papers, and whatever else I thought to try randomly. It quit showing up, so that's good. Still have the sound FC, though. No one else has it? Maybe it's some app, then. Will have to uninstall a few to figure it out.

Tim

I tried the 2.0a defrost ROM, but it was unstable. The mic feature kept force closing and the phone dialler application reported it wasn't installed on the system.

Since 2.0c is out, can I just download it and follow the process exactly like I would for 2.0a, or do I need a different radio file?

I am getting the same FC problem with the Settings > Audio menu. I'll have a play around with some of my apps and see if I can't get it to work. I'll let you know if I find out what it is. If it carries on I might flash 2.0b, or I think c has been released now too.

com.google.process.gapps error occurs when I turn off and then on Google Calendar Sync, which leads me to believe that is the problem. I NEED my Google Calendar, so I'm quite concerned about getting this fixed. Gah! My deleting the other apps wasn't a cure after all. Sigh...

Any clues? Edit: Cleared caches for Gmail and calendar apps. Seems to have worked since I went into Accounts & Sync, unpaired Google Calendar sync and paired it and the error doesn't occur.

Tim

p.s. Sorry if I'm posting and then answering my own questions here - just figured that it might be useful to someone else if they are running into the same problems.

Yeah I get the same com.google.process.gapps error with the calendar, and also had the same error when I synched my Google contacts so it seems it is something to do with Google synching. Hmm...

The sound issue I still don't know why that is. I would quite like to be able to change my ringtone etc though so it is a tad annoying. Without individually removing apps to see if this is what is affecting it I don't know what to try. That would take a while and it may not even be an app that's affecting it! Maybe I will try upgrading to Defrost 2.0b or c. If I do I will let you know the outcome.

If you go into the stock music player, you can change your ringtone there. Well, that is if you want a song to be your ringtone. If you hit menu, there's an option to "Set as Ringtone". If you want to change any kind of notifications, go into that particular application (I use Handcent SMS and change it in there, and go into the stock calendar to change the reminder tone).

That's the only way I know how to do it right now. Maybe there is an alert manager or something - I'll look for it.

Did you do the wipe? Select that tick box and flash the ROM again. This can also happen if you use titanium to restore apps. If you do, make sure it dosent restore HTC apps/services.

You should have got instructions with your unlock code?

Trackball has been fixed in the latest defrost release, to update simply download the latest defrost rom, and flash the rom using rom manager, its very easy! (Backup current rom before flashing)

Yep, you don't need to flash the radio file again if you have already done it.

I didn't use Launcher Pro when switching from 2.1 to 2.2, so I had to redo everything using Launcher Pro - putting my layout together again (fun, but tedious at times).

Will I have to redo my entire homescreen layout or will Titanium Backup restore it after the flash? Just curious. Everything works right now with 2.0a (finally) and I'm wondering if it is easy to upgrade to 2.0f, or will it involve redoing my entire layout (which is fun, but I've been messing with my phone way too much lately :D ).

EDIT: Nevermind. Went ahead and did it. Everything restored except for one widget. Perfect. Thanks.

Well, i took the plunge, rooted my Desire and flashed the Froyo Defrost ROM. I used the Moadaco R6 (0.80 bootloader) root method and then followed Lekky's guide for the 2.2 part. First of all i want to say thanks for the guide :D

However, i seem to be having a problem in that the stock Messaging app keeps force closing, i tried re-flashing the ROM and clearing the cache/data as suggested if there were problems but to no avail. The stock app works fine until i try to restore all of my data.

My question is, using titanium back up, which option should i be using to restore all of my data? As after doing this restore is when i start to encounter problems.
Also, i performed a full backup with titanium, but alot of my stuff namely settings/homescreen set ups/contacts are missing? Any help would be much appreciated? :)

Has anyone else had any problems with not receiving text messages after upgrading to this ROM? I'm on T-Mobile uk. Could it be a problem with the new radio?

I posted this on the guide to but haven't got an answer so thought I'd post it here.

Lekky, I rooted using Linux Tiny core with the r4 root files, will this guide work for me? Also do I need to install a recovery image using the bootloader by that I mean do I need to hold the power key and back button down when turning on phone or will ROM manager do that for me while phone is still turned on. You can also manually restore the data for certain apps, this is what i do to avoid any complications. For instance launcher pro is one of them.

Be aware about titanium when moving from 2.1 to 2.2, it may try to restore HTC services which will give you FC's all over the place.

those will be missing because you backed up HTC apps (those apps are specific to sense), and those htc apps don't exist on vanilla froyo. See above for problems using titanium regarding possibly restoring htc services.

Contacts should be available via google sync? If problems then restore your backed up rom and then try again being wary of my comments above.

Shouldn't be, check your apn settings

settings > wireless and network > mobile networks > access point names

As Lekky said in one of his posts the FC issues with Audio settings and with Google sync is to do with restoring HTC specific stuff when using Titanium to restore. If you just restore your actual apps that you downloaded from the Market you don't get these issues.

Btw if you flash Defrost 2.0f it no longer wakes on any of the hard buttons, only with the power button and the trackball. :D

I had no issues at all on 2.0a but I spotted f was out so I flashed to that. All still awesome and I am loving this Desire.

Lekky your a star:)

i have just installed this but afterwards i have found that i cannot get onto the market and internet any ideas?

What is rooting?
Should I, shouldn't I ?
pros n cons?

Currently locked to O2 if this helps any.
i have seen some very cool screen pics and set-ups from you peeps but the best ones all seem to be done on rooted Desires. How simple is the transgression?
Oh almost forgot, I have a Mac.

Oh almost forgot, I have a Mac.

I also have a mac and I rooted using this guide [TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) - xda-developers

I have an unbranded (simfree from carphone warehouse) so I used the guide in post 1, as your phone is locked to O2 you'll need to make a goldcard and use the guide in POST 3.

After that I used Lekkys excellent guide at the top of this thread to flash the Froyo ROM.

If you're a noob like me it all looks and sounds more complicated than it actually is but make sure you read up a bit about rooting and what can happen if it goes wrong if you are going to do it!

I only just rooted and flashed to Froyo yesterday by the way! If I can do it anyone can do it :D

Cheers,

Joe

Has anyone running the DeFrost 2.2 found that their Wi-Fi disconnects when the phone is on standby? Anyway to make sure it stays connected even when the screen is off?

settings > wireless and networks > wi-fi settings > menu > advanced > wifi sleep policy

If that doesn't work try reflashing with a clear data.
