Root Upgrade to Stock Froyo 2.2 Guide (Includes Root instructions)

Hey guys! I just got my desire 5 days ago and I'm now "addicted" to it (this is the reason why I am here researching stuff ;)). I just have a few question since I am really a noob on Android.

Background:
I bought my Desire from a local HTC dealer here in my country. All warranty claims (if any) will be undertaken/handled by the local HTC distributor directly. The phone is not "locked" to any mobile network carrier. Phone is now running Froyo 2.2 this was done via automatic software update when phone was connected to the internet. I guess it's safe to assume that it got the update from HTC directly and not my carrier.

So my questions are:

1. If I decide to root my Desire will it void the warranty?

2. The current bootloader of my phone is 0.93. The rooting how-to's I've seen here so far are for bootloaders 0.80 and lower. Can I still use these and apply to my phone or should I wait for an updated rooting how-to?

3. My main interest on rooting is I want the app2sd function (Froyo allows this but not to all. Still, some apps can not be moved to sd) and customizing themes etc. Considering this, is it worth it to root at all?

Thanks guys!!! Hope somebody out there can help me out. :D

I am in the same Boat so I think I can answer that ...

1. If I decide to root my Desire will it void the warranty?

Yes ...Simple

2. The current bootloader of my phone is 0.93. The rooting how-to's I've seen here so far are for bootloaders 0.80 and lower. Can I still use these and apply to my phone or should I wait for an updated rooting how-to?

No, 2.2 with bootloader 0.93 (same as mine) can not be rooted yet .....

So wait or install custom 2.2 rom (that can be rooted) or Downgrade to 2.1

3. My main interest on rooting is I want the app2sd function (Froyo allows this but not to all. Still, some apps can not be moved to sd) and customizing themes etc. Considering this, is it worth it to root at all?

As said official 2.2 can not be rooted yet, so to get app2sd either get custom 2.2 rom or downgrade to 2.1 and root .....

As I said even i am in the same Boat, when I got my desire i had 2.1, I rooted and was enjoying the device, untill I decided to use custome 2.2 rom with which I was not satisfied, I downgraded to 2.1 and did an OTA official 2.2 update (thinking that 2.2 can also be rooted) but it cannot so i am stuck as I do not want to downgrade and I am liking the stability of Official 2.2

sam9s,
your reponse is very much appreciated!
i've decided to just wait and use the official froyo in the meantime.
have good one!

hey guys
I have just rooted my desire which is orange branded, its gone fine without any problems and has removed all the bloatware that was on it when i purchased the phone. However im having trouble understanding ROMS and the technical part of it all. I tihnk im running the 2.1 ROM but im up for updating it to the 2.2 froyo one which is what lekky has put up but it says i need an unlock code for my phone , is this essential. Also with the ROM i have now is there any way i can save apps to SD? this is one of the main reasons for rooting it but i cannot figure out a way at all. any help would be great. thanks a lot

I'm not sure why this is presented as an upgrade to stock froyo, when it's an upgrade to a custom ROM based on froyo, but certainly not stock.

Guys Official 2.2 is rooted, Unrevoked 3.21 is officially released after a break and supports all HBOOTS and all Screens. I rooted my OTA 2.2 with HBOOT 0.93, SLCD with this tool. It went smoothly and works perfectly

You can get the latest version here ..... unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.21
.......

hello after I followed all the steps it is all very well except that I can not connect to wireless-phone shows that it scans and then stops scaning then start over again .Any ideea?

You can use ROM manager to create the partition i think. Open rom manager, let it download and install clockwork recovery, then reboot into recovery and there should be an option to partition.

Don't think Clockwork partitions for you. I believe Amon-Ra does.

The easiest way for partitioning would be to use Gparted Live CD.

You're right again as always! :) I've seen that option but had never gotten it to work. Now it does though..

Still it gives only three size options for partition 128, 256, 512 Mb..Not a wide choice. I've partitioned my ext3 to 1.4 Gb
