us galaxy s3 will get no key lime pie

Too early to determine if I even care or not. Jelly Bean sounded great at first but I don't even use Google Now anymore which was the main update. But still, this is pretty annoying not to have the option and I'm already thinking my next phone will be a Nexus.

no the main feature of 4.1 was project butter, google now was just a new feature. the sgs3 will get KLP just not right away

In my opinion, a device should be fully supported firmware-wise until it stops being officialy sold!
I know a lot of people disagree with that though lol :)
i suppose it depends on the consumer.... would YOU rather pay say $100 extra for a device for it to be officialy firmware updated for say 2yrs? Most people on here would probably say YES but then, we arent the average person lol... average person Eats desserts ;)

Well, this is not true for computers and remains not true for smartphones. Lenovo keeps supporting Thinkpads that were produced a decade ago with driver updates. Of course, Google continues supporting the Nexus phones and so on. In fact, I would say that the S3 would likely disappear from the shelves in less than 6 months. Samsung does not need it as the "low cost" option, as they would be releasing a number of other phones in this category. There would be even oversized versions of the S4 and so on.

The reason that Samsung will update the S3 has nothing to do with them being "nice". Samsung is trying to create a "Samsung" experience and it would like the S3 owners to hang around for the S5 and the S6. Updating the S3 is an investment in their brand. They do not need to do so with the carriers. They can update through Kies (as they did with the S2).

We are now in the ridiculous condition that the S2 Skyrocket (AT&T) runs 4.1.2 and the S3 AT&T runs 4.1.1!!! Obviously, this is not something that Samsung desires. I think that the complexity is not only with the carriers but also with support in these carriers. If a new update is released, AT&T would have to train hundreds (or even thousands) of support persons and issue extensive technical manuals. It is not a small effort for a phone which is now a "low cost" option.
