Useful torch

If you download the 'instant heart rate' app from The Market, you not only get a jazzy little app that checks the old ticker out but it NOW automatically turns on the camera flash light.

Brill ;)

But this is an actual torch - it turns on the flash, not that flashlight that brightens the screen - unless you are saying there is an icon that does that

The flashlight is an actual torch as it turns on the flash, 3 different brightness settings as well - it's brilliant and so far it has been the best thing about the update

Geordie, is this something you download from The Market? I had a quick look there but most are just apps to brighten the screen and act as a tepid light NOT an actual torch that uses the camera flash of the phone

Flashlight is included in the 2.2 update, no download needed. I think it's way better than any of the other torch apps out there, especially the different brightness settings :)

I haven't downloaded it because I don't need it (I already have an HRM with my Garmin watch) but I'm curious - how does this IHR app work without anything like a monitor strap?

The market description says you hold your finger over the camera for at least 10 seconds, so I can only assume that the camera CCD is being used to detect light changes.......

Thats strange. When i first bought my desire flashlight was a default app that came with the phone, and that was way back when i was still on 1.6. I never realised it wasnt a standard app.

The Desire has never been on 1.6 has it?

2.2 for the Desire came with it, but not with 2.1.

If you happen to use WidgetLock (which is awesome btw) and want a torch you can use from the lock screen, try installing TeslaLED from the market. It's a freebie and there's a WidgetLock slider specifically for it. Very handy! :-)

I've just launched a new app on the Market called 'Pro Torch'. Includes a signal flash, on/off torch and adjustable strobe. You can also set the default start-up mode (e.g. torch on at start). Please have a look and pass on any constructive feedback.

It's not available on the market, but I've found this to be the best torch application out there. It doesn't require root or any special settings, has minimal effect on battery life and won't burn out either the screen or the camera flash by driving it for longer than it was designed to do. Sadly it's not free, but I think it's well worth the money.
