Help Using the Desire as an MP3 Player

Can I get rid of the music that was already on the Desire?

I really only want this as a phone & for email, & I'll never listen to this!

Bear in mind I'm not very technical................................................

I love the phone though & am gradually sussing it all out, and if I ever do put music on it, will read all the things here!:D

matttye: Desire microsdcards are not hotswappable--you have to remove the battery to swap. Otherwise, though, you are quite right (although a number of phones for some time allow you to cut n paste in the way you describe!!)

True - I guess they're just swappable not hotswappable!

I used my (soon to be swapped for another Desire as I receive calls) Desire today for the first time as a MP3 player, I've got to say compared to my normal Ipod Touch it is really good, sound is nice and volume levels more than high enough, the navigation of my 6 albums was easy too.

Finally got this test done! No idea what super knockout boxing is doing there, i had downloaded it so think it was probably running in the background!!

This is witrh intensive usage too, as in the screen was pretty much on the whole time as I was browsing the net/newsroom/twitter etc

Im having abit of trouble with transferring mp3's to my 32gb sd card. I connect using the USB cable select disk drive on my ph, click and drag folders that are albums and watch it go over. I open the folder and its definately all there... Now i unmount the usb by using the windows thing that stops the usb connection and my ph starts reading the sd card. I go into music and there not there. When i reconnect my ph via usb the folders are no longer on my ph.

would someone mind helping me with a small problem that I have encountered. I have noticed that my tracks are not listed in alphabetical order in the Desires built in Music Player app, even though the tracks are numbered 1-13 and they are in perfect alphabetical order on my computer. What should I do to fix this? thanks in advance

Battery life as follows:

8am: Phone off charge, mild use of phone for 30 mins
8:30: Heavy use of phone begins, together with BT headset to listen to music
10:35: after 2 hours of continuous BT music play, and heavy internet use (ie screen never off)

= Battery 48%

Amazing. That's around 5 hours of music from full to flat on BT streaming.. I hope my battery performs the same...
Thanks for the tests Lekky.. :)

It's probably the easiest and quickest way to add music I've ever had in a phone. No need for bloated software, just mount the phone as a disk and copy/paste your files to the device just like you would a floppy or USB flash drive.

You must be from the Apple camp.. :) I've been using this feature on several phones (SE, Motorola, Nokia) for the past 3 years at least.

maybe offtopic but is see a couple of people on about ringtones.there is a fantastic app called ringdroid that lets you create mp3 ringtones from any mp3 on your phone.its so good ive been doing some for workmates and then bluetoothing them to their phones.ive now got a 3 sec drum beat from madness's the prince now as my email notification :)

Yes, ringroid is a must-have. :)

It's sad. I haven't used my iPod once since I got my Desire : P
Sp@tify all the way !

Also, ringdroid won't open up my mp3s. It keeps saying they're corrupted or something >.<

IMO i think is was a daft idea to change the USB. The number of times ive ended up crashing at friends and forgot my charger for my phone is cronic, but i was safe with the Hero because i could use any standard mini USD lead to charge it (PS3 charger lead, average digital camera lead, everyone has one)! Can't now...

a mate of mine has a hero and i thought oh he could use my ctr charger whe he was in my car but the hero has a different connection to the desire

A lot more, when i meant heavy phone usage, i mean 2 hours of the screen never being off, internet browsing and possibly some gaming.

Not sure if this is helpful now, but I've been playing with doubleTwist et all today...

The best way I have found to sync music (correctly) to a HTC Desire is to use Windows Media Player. The music is synced in the same format as if I had copied the individual folders direct to the SD card i.e. compilations are not split into multiple folders like doubleTwist....

Personally I used a playlist in WMP to sync. Unfortunately this 'playlist' file does not get synced, but once you copy the .wpl file to music directory it gets picked up by the stock player..... then you get the coverflow to work once you select the playlist.

You can of course create a playlist directly on the phone, but for some reason it randomises the tracks when you select an album, which is quite annoying...

Hope this helps..

Yeah that's a good question.

for now, i just download my music from a program on the App Store, and it just stores to the SD card.

I'd like to add a question to this:

Can i transfer my music from my Itunes library to my Desire? The thing is, most of my music is purchased, so is 'locked' within itunes, but i know there's an easy way around this, so i can play them, without limit on my phone.

any help?

guys, I don't know if this is the right place but I'm desperate so I'm gonna ask you here. for example, just to explain it better, i have a song Crazy by Britney Spears, with the album cover attached to it. and this is fine. but the problem is that my HTC Desire uses that album cover for some other songs to, like for example for some songs by Black Eyed peas or U2. i don't know how to fix this?

I use a program called "Mp3tag", free to download.

With it it's easy to tag mp3s with the album art you want, as well as the info you want regarding artist and album names.

As all my music is in lossless FLAC format I downloaded an app to play that and use this rather than convert to MP3.

Is anyone else slightly annoyed by the soft ticking sound there often is in the background when playing music using the stock player?

It seems to be earphone dependent, i.e. the supplied 'phones have the sound whereas my Sennheiser HD580s don't.

Yeh I get this with Shure SE210s. Annoying. It IS headphone dependant, I've another couple of pairs, stock HTC ones, MS Zune Stock buds and some real cheapies. Only does it with the Shure!

Just found this thread. So I am not too sure if your questions have been answered but I will add my 2 cents worth.

I use a freeware from Maniac Tools called Free M4A to MP3 Converter to convert all my iTunes purchases to MP3 format. I then connect HTC Desire via USB as Disk Drive. In the folder (on SD Card) called media, I have created a folder called Music. I then transferred all my converted iTunes purchases to this folder on the SD.

I do use my HTC Desire as an MP3 player. Quality of the play back is quite good without being brilliant. I find your choice of headphones will determine what your experience level will be like. I have a rather expensive headphone which has bass boost etc and with this headphone, quality is almost as good as my iPod Touch 3G.

The biggest downfall in using the Desire as a media player is the battery. The media player drains the battery like you wouldn't believe. That is why I have a charger in my car, at home and in the office. Oh! And another one is that the Desire cannot play FLAC format which sucks.

Apart from that, I have not problems with using my HTC desire as a media player and if you can afford to have multiple chargers (I only had to buy my car charger as my wife has a Wildfire which uses the same charger so her charger is at home, mine is in the office and the purchased one is the car charger .. don't know where you are but in Australia, the car charger sells for ~$20 but the HTC chargers sell for over $50), I recommend it to anyone.

Hope this helps.

PS: Try out other Maniac Tools software. They are good and reliable. Also checkout Koyote Software who also make some rather useful free tools. :)

PPS: I use HTC's native media player but there are some rather good ones on the market.
