[Verizon] 4.0.4

Don't shoot me, I'm knew to all this ROM stuff...so how long does it take to translate into a usable ROM...let's say by AOKP.

We could see ROM's based off this for the GN as soon as tomorrow imo, as long as it is dropped in a timely manner (by 3pm as stated by Jean)

So when I was running 4.0.4 stock with the Franco 18.2 kernel, my phone would randomly shut off and would require a battery pull to restart again for no real reason that I can think of. So I'm not sure if it was the kernel not working on my phone, or if it was 4.0.4 itself not working. But now I'm running AOKP b28 with LeanKernel 2.7 on 4.0.3 and no issues yet. Is it possible that 4.0.4 was causing those issues, or is it more likely to be Franco?

The only reason I ask is because I'd be hesitant to run, say AOKP, on 4.0.4 again if it was indeed 4.0.4 causing those problems.

Can i just politely remind everyone that new source code will do nothing for the signal issue/reception that the VZW Nexus is plagued with for a lot of users? If you don't have signal problems then this is great news. For those of us that do have them (me) .4 source means very little to me. :)

i'm seriously becoming frustrated with Android/Google at the moment.

you have to understand that the .4 variant you were running before was not compiled from source code but rather a leak that dropped for a device. Source code should clear up a lot of issues that Roms may have had when trying to use that leaked .4 build. Take B.A.M.F for instance they chose to only use pieces of the .4 leak that came out, if i had to guess one of the reasons would probably be compatibility issues.

So basically give Franco another chance? Something I'd be more than willing to do since I did have some good days with it. I guess I got a little hasty and really wanted to run .4 but now that I'm back on .3, I can't say that I'm missing anything from it. ROMs take care of all of that stuff.

yes i would definitely give it another chance. Custom Roms will only improve with each official release of Source. I can't wait to go back and try Redemption Rom after Lou rebuilds it from the new source. Granted i'll still have the signal reception issue but at least i can smoothly navigate through my phone even better than now.

Well... since you asked politely? Sure. :p

(Steven runs)

I sympathize. I guess you have ran the exchange for another phone, replacement SIM card, gauntlet?

You make me feel lucky. I got mine on release day and although sometimes the signal bars are low it has not let me down. 4G has even silently moved into my area.

same here, november 29 built, low bars but never drops calls/data. though 4g speeds have slowly been getting worse, guessing more people using the network now than last year.

i really don't understand how people that have issues with the phone could keep it beyond the return period though

What has you so convinced that the official 4.0.4 release won't address signal issues? Do you believe they are hardware related?

I wouldn't assume that it can't fix firmware problems simply because a 2 month old leaked version couldn't... it still may not, but I wouldn't base my beliefs on what came from the leaked versions...

because it doesnt seem as though the radios were addressed in the 4.0.4 release, it may be something verizon has to get their hands on and take care of...

4.0.4 source that is released is purely that. It's just the updated Source code for Ice Cream Sandwich in general. No extra drivers packed in. It's basically to update the OS. The core of ICS. Every few months there will be a new version of source released possibly. This source is what Devs take to make their roms. It doesn't include radio files especially for the VZW G Nex which we all know has been put on the back burner officially from google.

it seems as though it pays to be on a GSM device... even though the signal is much, much, weaker in some areas we live in
