Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

So Verizon has released information on the unlimited data plans, current news being you can keep your unlimited if you purchase a new phone at full value aka $600+, but (posting on behalf of my gf) what about the 150mb old plan? yes yes I know "zomg wtf how can someone still have that plan this day and age???" and the answer is my gf lol. she will be upgrading her phone this summer and would like to know if she will have to be getting a new tiered data plan or if verizon will let her keep her 150mb. why anyone would want to have only 150mb is beyond me. I feel I use that in a day, not a month.

Merged this with the existing discussion of the Verizon unlimited plan ending. Thanks for understanding. :)

My wife also has this plan, she is at home most of the time, so is almost always on wi-fi. I honestly don't know, I but I would assume that this would also end upon an upgrade. Another thing for me to think about too :p

haha ok, I looked at my threads posted and saw it was gone and had a :dontknow: moment. but its all good. I would also expect they would have to go to tiered as well.

ok I searched the internet up for the 150mb plan if they will be forced to switch and couldnt find anything. so I just went onto verizon wireless's chat and this is what I got:

Morris: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Me: I had a question for my girlfriend and her data plan. She is currently on a 150mb data plan and will be in need of an upgrade phone this summer. will that 150mb plan go away when she upgrades to 4g?
Morris: yes it will
Me: I'm sure you prolly don't know the prices of the new tiered plans yet right?
Morris: We have plans of 2gb for $30, 5gb for $50, and 10gb for $80.
Me: but those will be changing come summer when the new tiered data plans are released right?
Morris: There has not been any information released at this time about any data plan price changes.

That is really as expected since there hasn't been any announcement of changes other than the vague releases we've seen posted in this thread

It appears to me, the best method of keeping unlimited data when and being able to upgrade to one of the new phones they are holding out on is to.....

1- Go to Costco and do a renewal on whatever phone they have out on the last day before the new tiers go into effect.

2- Go back to Costco and exchange your phone to the new phone once it is released.

I've seen claims going both ways here that people say it isn't possible and some saying it is. I called my local Costco Wireless Kiosk and they said it is possible. If the kiosk itself tells you, "No", you go to Costco membership desk/ returns desk themselves and demand an exchange (of course you need to pay the difference).

All done. It's highly doubtful Verizon would be waiting 90 days to bring out new phones between when the new tiers start and when the next high end phones come out.

I know the above prices are for the current tiered data plans but I hoping the the (sometime in the future) shared data plans will cost something similar. This seams somewhat likely as the same amount of data for the same price would not be "out of the ballpark" pricing.

But, time will tell. Best of luck to all of us, :)

I would think they will do something similar to the current tiers but require higher tiers based on the number of smartphones on the plan.

But if they require higher tiers because of the number of phones, what's the point of shared data?

They don't require you to sign up for higher family minute plans just because you have 5 phones on a family plan instead of 3.

But, who knows what they'll do. As always we wait and see....

If you've got a minute, go sign the petition at Change.org started by someone at XDA
In this day and age, we have to be extra careful when giving out information. I am not saying this person will, but how can I be 100% sure the information will not go to marketers?

If I were the person, after you signed this list, I will know many facts about you: I know your real name. I know where you live. I have your email address that works. I know you are a Verizon Wireless customer with an Android phone and you are not happy with the upcoming tier data plan. Wouldn't such information worth a lot of money to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint?

Furthermore, why is this person partitioning the CFO of Verizon Wireless? A CFO does not make operational decision. If you are partitioning VzW, you should send it to the CEO and the Chairman of the Board instead of the CFO.

True, which is why it seemed unusual that it was the CFO that publicly announced the new data plans, which is in turn probably why this is directed to them.

I think the CFO was so eager to please the Street that he "accidentally" unveiled the plan. I don't believe it is an "official" Verizon Wireless company announcement. It is definitely not a "Press Release".

I'm not familiar with the current individual plans but IIRC the lowest tier minute plan available on an individual plan is lower than the lowest available tier family minute plan

FWIW there is a 300mb plan for 20 bucks as well. Girl has it on her Incredible

I had the actual memo in my hand today at Verizon. They printed it out for me to read but wouldn't let me take it out.

It basically said that if you enter a new contract, meaning that if you upgrade your device at the subsidized price, you will lose grandfathered unlimited data. If you upgrade your device at full price or purchase it on your own, you can keep unlimited data indefinitely.

There you have it. That's the bottom line. I saw the memo myself, with my own eyes. I can't do any better than that for you.

Side note: I'm so busy with this af job that I had no idea of the discussion going on here. If you have questions key me know as I'm not around this thread.

I thought you said they canceled this?

At this point pretty much all that has been confirmed is once this goes into effect you can keep your unlimited data if you purchase upgrades at full price, if you elect to get an upgraded phone at a discounted price for signing a new contract you will lose your unlimited data. We still do not have any dates of when this will go into effect so there is no reason to use any pending upgrades yet if none of the current phones appeal to you.

I went into a VZW corporate store today and upgraded my line and my daughter's line, both from the DINC to the Droid Razr (price dropped to $99). I received my final $50 discount (new every two) on my line and was charged $30 per line to upgrade. The rep confirmed that, sometime in the future, I would have to pay full price to keep my unlimited. Before activating the lines I stayed on the phone with a VZW rep that could see my account and confirm unlimited data and $20 Talk Text and Data promo discount. As each line was activated, she confirmed that these were still in effect, and my final print out showed that this was true. I will now be putting away $20 a month minimum so that I can pay full price "sometime in the future" when I want to upgrade.
