Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

I had the actual memo in my hand today at Verizon. They printed it out for me to read but wouldn't let me take it out.

It basically said that if you enter a new contract, meaning that if you upgrade your device at the subsidized price, you will lose grandfathered unlimited data. If you upgrade your device at full price or purchase it on your own, you can keep unlimited data indefinitely.

There you have it. That's the bottom line. I saw the memo myself, with my own eyes. I can't do any better than that for you.

Side note: I'm so busy with this af job that I had no idea of the discussion going on here. If you have questions key me know as I'm not around this thread.

Steven
Thanks for the information Steven! I don't really mind paying full price. I paid as much (if not more) for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The real questions are: Will they carry the GS3 and when will they release it? The GS3 is the only phone that I want. And I don't want to wait till Fall. Do you have such information?

Thanks again!

So this is basically contradicting what was posted earlier regarding the comments from the Customer Loyalty rep and confirming what everyone else has already been saying. Were they able to offer any information on when these changes would take effect or how much advance notice can be expected?

I just spoke with vzw underling. They have not officially implemented the "Kill your Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan" uh, plan. But they are going to...soon.

If a friend had a spare 4G phone not on any lines, could I use it to change my plan to 4G unlimited and then reactivate my current Droid X w/ 3G and buy an unsubsidized 4G phone later and keep the 4G unlimited?

So in order to keep my unlimited I have to pay full retail for a phone, which could be as high as $700, depending on the phone i want?

I am not sure about this, the way it sounds to me is if you have a 3G phone and are on unlimited then buy an 4G phone at full retail you should be able to keep the unlimited data...AFAIK there isn't a difference between the 3G and 4G plans currently with VZW

You are correct. And welcome to AF :D

Actually there are different codes for unlimited 3G and 4G unlimited plans, so it could be possible he will need to switch to a 4G phone prior to the change in policy. This needs to be cleared up I think.

Yeah it needs to be cleared up. I wonder if just activating a 4G phone and then going back to 3G only if it will show up as a 4G plan or revert back  I am betting if this change goes into effect prior to the 4G iPhone release there will be lots of angry customers...they would essentially be forcing someone to not upgrade or go tiered even if they pay full retail for a phone...

Lots of angry customers is one thing Verizon doesn't seem to care much about these days........

I'm grandfathered and signed a new 2 year agreement 2 months ago... I still have unlimited data.

If you're grandfathered, as long as you KEEP the line(s), you'll have unlimited data on those lines. New lines will have the data caps.

What I wonder is if I activate a tablet on my current phone line, will vz allow me to do so, since it's not a phone? I might get a tablet if they allow it.

Guess it's a good thing we entered the new agreement when we did. My reply was more to those that said it's being enforced now.

Okay, you are right it is not being enforced currently we should know before it is going to be enforced so people with upgrades can use them before they would get shafted :D

I don't know about permanently having it on but i frequently switch my unlimited Sim into my xyboard. I read somewhere that Verizon couldn't block you from putting your Sim into another 4g device. Something to do with the FCC i believe but i never really pay attention, i just saw "unlimited 4g" and "tablet"

Yea, I figured they'd only know if you popped up on their radar for being a data hog. Otherwise I can't imagine they'd monitor all phones for cell use and txt messages, which would be an indication of a tablet on a phone number/line. I ask, because I wondered how vz sets up a tablet in user accounts... If they're not coded with a phone number like phones, or if they have some fake 555.1212 number. Tbh, I use my phone more as a tablet anyway, so I may just drop the cell line for a data only next time.

So.... is it definitively known exactly what's going down? I have three 4g phones on a grandfathered unlimited plan and one 3g phone still unlimited. Are the three 4g phones going to get tiered? If we upgrade the last 3g phone soon will it get tiered or will it still get grandfathered?

It is not sure what is going on. As it looks now if you upgrade at a discount after this goes into effect you will lose unlimited regardless of the phone you had previously. If you pay full retail for a phone after this goes into effect the 4G lines should keep their unlimited. The 3G line may or may not...we are not sure. We also do not know when this will go into effect either.

This^ I've decided not to take the chance on my unlimited 3G, so have purchased a used Thunderbolt.

After the initial anger and much thought, I've adopted a wait and see stance. I'm not a heavy data user, and neither is my husband, so depending on what the new shared pools look like, it could save us money. But I want to be able to make the decision to give up my unlimited, not have Verizon make it for me.

The tablet gets a ghost number when it is activated.

AT&T is talking about "Toll-Free" Data Plan. They will push the streaming cost to the content providers like NetFlix. It makes a whole lot of sense. And it will ease the concern of the consumers on streaming video and music. I think Verizon should follow.

AT&T Users Could See "Toll-Free" Data Plans In The Next 12 Months, Says CEO Randall Stephenson
I think that's the point of this little venture of theirs...
Viewdini: Could this app be Verizon’s first pass at toll-free mobile data?
