Root [Verizon] Galaxy S4 Root?

Destroh

Lurker
Hello!

I am new to the forum and I have been googleing for hours a day trying to find an effective root for the Samsung Galaxy S4.

I have been unable to find a root that works for it. I have SCH-I545 With the following security updates:
MDF V1.0 Release 3
VPN V1.4 Release 2

Running 4.4.2 software.

I need a working root and fast for this phone.

Side note: it was originally a Verizon Wireless phone, but I bought a SIM card and switched to Straight Talk.

Is there root out there to get this phone rooted?

I have a feeling towelroot works for that phone. Do a search for towelroot.apk
If that doesn't work you'll need a PC

4.4.2 is a lot trickier and there is the danger of tripping Knox. What firmware is on your handset?

Here is the rest of ALL of my phones info.

I moved this thread to the Verizon Galaxy S4 All Things Root subforum. :thumbsupdroid:

I also found this thread over at XDA - can't promise that it will work, but it may be worth a shot. :)

I'd rather the thread be were it was. Ithink will likely not even get a post past mine now that it is moved. as it has notime gotten a helpful post since you moved It. Please get rid of dead forums. If no one views a topic, then it is useless to have it.

Destroh,
Moving your thread here will benefit not only you (as others with your device can help) but others who are in the same boat you are;)
Have you read thru that link that shadow and CS posted?
I quickly skimmed thru that thread, and it seems towelroot will work once you ODIN to a different kernel. (step listed in the OP)
What I am not exactly clear on, is if the kernel flash will mess with your ST flash. (I don't think so, but...)
Also, be sure to read carefully through that whole thread (sorry, I did not have time to do that) so you can see issues others have gone thru so that you are prepared:)
Now, yes something could go wrong, just bear that in mind when rooting.
Also, it may be a good idea to have a way out. What I mean is, having the firmware version for your device ready to be flashed via ODIN just in case something goes wonky.

The NK1 kernel is unrootable via Towel Root or any one-click method. Sadly unless you have a laptop or computer you're screwed. i am not sure i even have one running MS Windows (required for ODIN sadly) anymore since switching to Linux.

I am very concerned about that hideous new TouchWiz that's packaged with Lollipop infiltrating my S4. I really like TouchWiz as it is now, and if anyone is familiar with SDM.APK you'll know it's relentless and will eventually grey out the 'install later' and force the update. can't do away with that unless you are rooted.

Does anyone know if the dev behind Towel Root will update the app to support the latest kernels? Or if there is a method to get ODIN or an alternative to run in Linux?

Read some rumor about Mobile Odin. does that work anymore?

I have the same exact problem. With the exact same phone to the T. I have used my laptop with ODIN and am still having problems. Yes any help on this issue would be great.

I just flashed old kernel via ODIN and towelroot worked fine, then flashed back NK1 and still rooted. i highly recommend V6 SuperCharger if you hate apps reloading or redrawing (TouchWiz is relentless and refuses to keep more than 5 apps in memory.)

None of these are working for me. I'm not worried about Knox, the phone is 4 years or so old and there is no warrenty. Does anyone have a good root? I don't really care about how complicated it might be.

Rooting won't trip the Knox fuse, only unlocking the boot loader will. Mine is rooted, shows a 'Custom' with unlocked padlock icon on boot (don't know what that means, it's not unlocked nor is the boot loader ) but Knox status is still 0x0

How can I get attention s4 to T-Mobile safe mode won't go away

what you want to do is first download odin and flash the nc5 kernal, then use towelroot, then after that flash back the nk1 kernal. (as the nc5 kernal is slightly unstable and your phone may shut down randomly, if this happens just keep trying until towelroot gives you the "your phone is now rooted, no shutdown nessisary" message.) when you flash back the nk1 your phone will be stable and have root.

I have tried the Odin flash method (running 4.4.2), and the NC5 kernel soft bricked my phone (stuck in a boot loop, couldn't even open Towelroot to try and make it ra1n). Had to do a factory reset. One S4 has already been "upgraded" to Lollipop 5.0.1 (d*mn you, VZW), and this method doesn't work at all now. Odin fails every time with a FAIL! (Auth) message. So I have a 4.4.2 NK1 that soft bricks upon flashing and a 5.0.1 OC1.
Does anyone have any workarounds for either 4.4.2 boot looping and/or rooting 5.0.1 at all?

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!! Just root Verizon S4 OC1 with Kingroot 4.1. It was in Chinese, but just hit some buttons and you should have root in your device for now! ENJOY!!!!!
