[Verizon] Help with unfinished root!

Lurker
Hey, I am relatively to new to android and rooting (my first time), and I have encountered a problem.

I am trying to root my galaxy nexus using the guide on PC World. I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed clockwork recovery 5.5.0.4 on it. Then, I tried to push the su.zip file using adb push su.zip /sdcard/, but the command prompt is telling me device not found. I tried to reboot, but it loops on the google screen, and I can't manually drag and drop the su file into my phone, because it isn't showing up in my computer.

I am a little worried, given I don't really know what I'm doing, so if any of you could help me at all that would be awesome!

So I can get to fastboot, and recovery mode, but I can't go past that (ie actually start), because it loops on the google screen after restarting. I did install the drivers originally. When I typed adb devices into command line before, it showed a device was present. Now it doesn't anymore

you can't do adb functions with the phone in fastboot mode. Only fastboot functions.

i'm not familiar with the instructions you followed. It may be best if you just start over and reflash back to stock.

once you flashed CWM did you perform a nandroid? If so you could try restoring it to get you to a known working spot.

Ok, so I actually made some progress. I can get to recover mode with clockwork. Next, when I try to use adb as such: "adb push su.zip /sdcard/" I get the following error: failed to copy 'su.zip' to '/sdcard/': Is a directory.

And trophynuts, yeah I didn't realize that you had to be in recovery mode to use adb. Like I said, I am new at this.

Any ideas about the error when I try to push the su file?

Couple things, if you're going to try and push the su.zip, you'll need the sdcard mounted. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work good on the gnexus using the mounts/storage option in cwm. Give it a shot but if need be, try this instead from cwm menu:

-apply zip from sdcard
-choose zip from sdcard

Stop at that point and don't select anything. That action forces the sd partition to mount on the gnex. So then with the phone connected via usb cable and with the su.zip placed in the platform-tools folder of the sdk, try this:

adb push su.zip /sdcard/

or perhaps

adb push su.zip /sdcard/su.zip

Thing is, it seems likely to me that you have an issue with your boot.img. Seems the likely culprit when bootlooping from the google screen. May still end up fastboot flashing stock img's.

More I think about it, you may not get by with the /sdcard location since it's actually housed at /data/media on our device. Fingers are crossed but you may need a shell in which case you need root. :eek:

I'll give it a shot when I get home and verify. I'm on the fly right now so I'm having a hard time concentrating on details atm. :D

Edit:
Yep, so using the install zip/choose zip method to force the mount, it worked fine using the first command:

adb push su.zip /sdcard/

I now have the su.zip on the card. Scary explains it even better in the next post. Just following up here since I said I would.

FYI, ClockworkMod does not mount the /sdcard (/data/media) area until you've selected the "install zip from sdcard" menu option. That leads to the errors / issues you're seeing when you try to push the su.zip file across to the phone.

You can simply navigate to the "install zip from sdcard" without actually selecting and flashing anything (just get him to display some files--that's enough to get him to mount the "/sdcard") so you can push it via adb.

There might also be a manual mount for the /sdcard mount point in the advanced options, I'm not sure, but you can check.

Also, if you don't want to navigate to the "install zip from sdcard" menu as mentioned above, simply use "/data/media" instead of "/sdcard" as the target for your adb push of the su.zip. That'll work, too.

Or, just make sure you've already downloaded and/or dragged and dropped the su.zip file (don't extract / unzip it!) to the /sdcard folder prior to booting into ClockworkMod.

Cheers!

P.S. here's the details I pulled from my http://androidforums.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-all-things-root/469049-how-root-vzw-lte-samsung-galaxy-nexus.html thread:

- next, you'll need to push (send) the su.zip (flashable root package) to your phone's internal memory ("SD card"):

Code:
[B]For MS/Windows[/B]:

[COLOR="purple"]adb push su.zip /sdcard/[/COLOR]       [COLOR="Red"](notice the trailing forward slash)[/COLOR]

-- or --

[COLOR="purple"]adb push su.zip /data/media/su.zip[/COLOR]

[COLOR="Blue"](I included the second version of this command because the first didn't work
for me at times (CWM wasn't always "seeing" the file I just pushed))[/COLOR]

[B]For Mac/Linux[/B]:

[COLOR="purple"]./adb push su.zip /sdcard/[/COLOR]      [COLOR="Red"](notice the trailing forward slash)[/COLOR]

-- or --

[COLOR="purple"]./adb push su.zip /data/media/su.zip[/COLOR]

[COLOR="Blue"](I included the second version of this command because the first didn't work
for me at times (CWM wasn't always "seeing" the file I just pushed))[/COLOR]

###

here's what the output looks like on my Windows PC:

c:\gnex\sdk-tools> [B]adb push su.zip /sdcard/[/B]
[COLOR="blue"]4346 KB/s (1126078 bytes in 0.253s)[/COLOR]
