I dunno. I think both companies have their downfall. In their attempt to be open, Google is the biggest information collection conglomerate in the world.
Apple may like to control what goes on their device, and how you use that device, Google wants to know everything about you and wants to make sure that eventually they know/own everything.

I think it'll have a heavy impact in California, where I live. Nearly everywhere you look theres an iphone. Its almost ridiculous. But I still want one, I think its a great phone and simple to use with minor issues compared to the problems I'm having with android, so therefore I will gladly dump my Droid for it. I have MANY friends with Voyagers and such that have upgrades, but have been holding out to get an iPhone from Verizon. Sure they could have gone Android at any time, but most of them would pick up my phone and have no idea how to use it, or they'd get too frustrated with the glitchy touchscreen and apps.
OMFG I thought it was just me, I went to Disneyland this past Holiday season and my goodness I thought I was the only one with an Android device in Anaheim, sheesh, talk about over-saturation.....I understand Apple in Cupertino but come on...
Well I just don't understand why anyone would want this iphone when a new model is due four month later. Verizon is upgrading to Lte (4G) so why not wait for iphone5 not to mention this is the first CDMA iphone you can bet folks will have issues..

Do you really think Verizon will have even half the country under 4G in 2 years? I really doubt it.With all that is going on with Big Red and LTE, I do not understand why anyone would want to lock themselves in for two years with a 3g phone, which is what the Vz iPhone will be.
If you have not seen it yet, go to the engadget website and check out the Motorola Droid Bionic (and /or the other three 4g phones shown at CES last week and coming to Verizon shortly). The specs are amazing. The Bionic will be my next phone, unless something better comes along before my new in 2 (20 months, for me) comes up on July 6.
My only serious gripe about Android is the horrible implementation, or attempted implementation, of hands free blue tooth voice dialing. Sooner or later (Honeycomb, maybe?) they will get that right.

One thing thats good with Verizon getting the iphone is that AT&T will be forced to get better top end smartphones in for their customers. I know about a year ago I left AT&T because they had a crappy selection of phones and it seemed like they was trying to force the iphone on to me.
I see many iphones users leaving at&t just to finally enjoy a 3G network. As a lot of the US dont even have 3g service from AT&T. I laughed when AT&T announced they was starting 4G service. Guess they forgot many of their customers still dont have 3G in their area( like me).
I hope many android owners moves to this ViPhone. Maybe I can get a top end android phone for cheaper![]()
I would disagree into the whole "i've bought into the android eco system."
Most of my android Aps are free or cost less compared to the iOS counterparts. Its much easier for me to switch to Apple (I still think a lot of android users will), than for Apple users to switch to us.
I would miss the Google Experience apps, but I don't know if people realize they will, hence my point of you dont know what you have until you lose it.
I think we will see a good number of people switching, the question is will they come back.
In my mind, the bottom line is always based upon functionality, performance, form factor and cost.
For the higher end smartphones, the costs are pretty much the same. While different smartphones may do things differently, the functionality is pretty much the same.
So the real differentiators are form factor and performance.
When it comes to performance, I beleive much of the software on the Android is a mess (I could go into great detail, but that could be for another post) . In addition, I use the Droid X and the 3g performace of my Droid X pretty much sucks, although this is probably a Motorola issues and not an Android issue. While the Android platform allows users a lot of flexibility and customization, I feel this is very much overrated, expecially if you are not inclined to root your phone. It's fun to change your screens look and feel, but it gets old after a while. In addition, how much flexibility do you really have if you can't even delete "Need for Speed". The IPhone software functions seemlessly and is very polished. If putting the IPhone on the Verizon network addresses the deficiencies of the AT&T network, the IPhone will have stellar performance.
Form factor is very subjective. While I love the screen size of my Droid X, the IPhone is a very appealing piece of hardware.
One of the other posters said that they thought the explosion of Android users was because it was the only smartphone platform offered by Verizon, so if you wanted a smartphone on Verizon, that's what you bought. This is very true in my case. I didn't want to leave Verizon, so I had no other choice but to pick an Android phone.
In my mind, when you add it all up, the manufactureres using the Android operating system need to improve the software real fast if they are going continue to compete. In addition, the hardware supporting the Android phones needs to improve as well.
Well...isnt that considered the Android eco system? If one decides to go from Android to iPhone, the apps they invested money in with Android might cost more on the iPhone. You think it will be easier for someone to go from free and low cost to higher cost?
Based on what u said, it should be easier for iPhone folks to switch to Android if you factor in cost of apps.
lol...I dont know why ppl say this....the old Win Mo is still there, Blackberry is still there. Palm is still there. Android wasnt the only smartphone on Verizon.
Ppl chose Android over those for a reason....when you mention the software and hardware for Android....why did ppl still choose Android over those other platforms?
It wasnt about BOGO, deep discounts. Those things were offered with the other platforms too.
Ppl chose Android on Verizon for a reason.
Short term, I think its bad for AT&T. Apple has done a fantastic job of making sure AT&T remains the sole whipping boy for most of the "negatives" around the iPhone. Until the antenna fiasco with the iPhone 4, it was considered heresy to consider that some of the issues with the iPhone were related to the phone itself, not just AT&T's crap network. Well, kids, we're about to find out if it really was the network. If it is, then AT&T loses out short AND long term. If it the problems continue to surface on VZW's network, its going to be hard for Apple to quietly point the finger at AT&T.
As far as Android, it will not be dramatically affected. The iPhone is available internationally with no exclusive deals like here in the USA, and Android has no problems competing with the iPhone.
For us, the end users, its a win all the way around. Android will have to step up its game and quicken the pace of improvement, especially if the iPhone sells as well at
VZW as it does at AT&T. You'll definitely see a renewed focus if they see numbers that show android sales dropping in favor of iphone sales. Competition among the manufacturers is good, especially since we can't get it among the providers, at least not in the USA.
Think about what you just said, Winmo, palm and blackberry are still there. Three OS that are barely selling these days and generate little to no interest. Palm, the pre? Its safe to say that hardly anyone wants those phones. Pretty much all of the SUPERPHONES to come out on Verizon have been Android.
So what are you saying? Those OS's started dying because a better option (Android) was available?
And if that's what you are saying, do you think that Android will die off as well because the iPhone is coming to Verizon?
I'd agree with the fact that Android phones rule Verizon as well as every carrier with the exception being AT&T. AT&T basically ensured that would be the case by carrying a very limited selection of quality Android devices.
AT&T had a vested interest in making people think that the iPhone was the greatest device on the planet because they were the only ones that had it. Now that you can get the iPhone on a better network you will see AT&T pimping out their Android and WM7 phones like never before. Verizon isn't going to ditch their Android lineup because of their newly acquired iPhone.
Verizon's goal with the new iPhone isn't the same as AT&T's goal was. AT&T NEEDED the iPhone to keep them from going under several years ago. Verizon simply wants to take more market share from AT&T.
It's been reported that there are 15 iPhone users to every 1 Android user on AT&T. You will never see those kind of numbers on Verizon's network.
As an AT&T customer I am looking forward to this. AT&T works fine in my area but having a bunch of people off the network couldn't hurt.
However being a really big fan of the iPhone, and Apple products, I am really interested in the Motorola Atrix, I think this phone has some potential. The one thing that has kept me away from Android based phones is how they take a nice OS and mess with it and put features, apps, and extras on the phone that you can not remove. If I could buy one phone with a clean OS and decide what I want to do it would be better, not that the iPhone truly lets you do that, but it is a smooth not cluttered iOS.
i personally dont think its an iPhone announcement still. But if it is then all will do is help android in the long run. Google advances at a much faster rate than apple with their OS. then not to mention the hardware manufacturers that use android. if verizon gets the iPhone it will take a small chunk out within the begining but then android developers and manufacturers and going to kick it into overdrive and pump out some unbelievable hardware.
The Nexus One and Nexus S are designed to be exactly that. I haven't used one, but the reviews clearly point to that.

Why do you say that? The specs are competitive with other phones on the market, but I see nothing about it that makes it stand apart from anything else out there.

From an Android POV, I honestly believe that the winner out of all of this is going to be T-Mobile and Sprint. This is going to force them to put out better phones to keep up with the masses of iOs lovers who will jump ship to go to Verizon since most waited for a better option other than Att.
) Wouldn't it be better to wait for the iCrap 5 to come out for AT&T, then jailbreak it for T-mobile? Then you're still avoiding AT&T's terrible service, all while sticking with the convenience of GSM.
