Verizon iPhone: How Will It Affect Android?

AT&T terrible service?? AT&T works great for me. Much better than non-existent Sprint or T-Mobile.
Verizon doesn't work in my house where I need it. AT&T is the best choice for me AND it has worked, flawlessly everywhere I have been.

Really, the anti-AT&T stuff is getting old kids.

You know Baldi, a lot of it just depends on where you live. Where I am in Scottsdale, AZ ... Verizon has much better service than At&t. And my Cricket works as well. In two months of owning this phone I have never had a dropped call even one time. The coverage is great.

But in other places....forget it. It's not so hot.

I have had At&t service here a few years back and it was terrible. And I never hear anything good about them from my friends here who have high end phones. Not even those with iphones.

So I don't think there is any anti-At&t conspiracy going on. I'm sure it's really dependent on where one lives. After all At&t is still the number two carrier in the country.

:)

Anti-AT&T? Of course I am!

Speaking as someone who has had service from 3 of the 4 major carriers, I firmly believe that AT&T is terrible. The phone service is terrible, the customer service is terrible, and the majority of their phones aren't that great anyway, unless you're into Blackberries and iPhones.

I much prefer T-mobile. I get decent signal almost everywhere, the customer service (both over the phone and in person) is amazing, and I have a wide variety of good phones to choose from.

Oh, and by the way, I get pretty good signal in Delaware.

Obviously all of this boils down to preference. Some people are going to be more likely to choose the iPhone just because its so easy to use and much more friendly when it comes to everyday business use. I personally have an Eris right now and I will switch to the iPhone as soon as it comes out simply because a MacBook and would like to have everything be more easily compatible. And even though the specs of most android phones are equal to or are better than that of the iPhone people just want the most simple and elegant phones.

The #1 reason that the Verizon iPhone is a big deal is because of AT&T's network being unsatisfactory for so many of the iPhone users. If your service is good, then that's a good thing for you and may not be a consideration when you choose your carrier and phone.

...But it doesn't detract from the inferior service many current AT&T customers have habitually complained about for the last several years. And if it wasn't a big problem, little to no AT&T iPhone users would be jumping ship to Verizon.

Case rested! Great post, UBRocked!!! :D

Thanks :)

Just to be clear...this is not "carrier bashing". It's just what many iPhone users have complained about. There are probably a ton of people who have AT&T and are completely satisfied with their service. But many metropolitan cities have had connectivity issues affecting many users.

Really? T-Mobile might, MIGHT cover 15% of Delaware and there is NO roaming with AT&T.

T-Mobile is second rate at best.

There's no roaming with T-mobile either. I've been through West Virginia (where T-mobile is non-existent) and never been charged a cent for roaming.

I've been to Delaware multiple times. Driving through the state I averaged 2 bars out of 5, Dewey/Rehoboth area averaged 4, and I got between 4 and 5 bars at Bethany, depending on if I was going towards or away from OC.

That's because you stayed near a road. Once you get off of a road, street or town, you can kiss T-Mobile coverage goodbye in DE.

I missed the first half of the discussion so I'm sorry if I repeat something but I think it's important to point out that Apple has had a lot longer to flaunt the iPhone and tell everyone how great it is and they can't live their life without it than Google, or any of the companies with Android on their phones, have. I'm not saying the iPhone is a bad phone. Not by any means. BUT a lot of the people buying it are getting it for the hype it has gotten over the years. As a Verizon authorized retailer I can't tell you how many people come up to me saying "do you have that i.. phone.. something like that?" They don't even know what it's really called or what it's about and they want it because one of their friends said "look what I can do" and now they want it, too. They definately have no idea what Android is. Once Android gets more time to get their name out there and has people talking about them, then we'll see who does better, but the iPhone has a definate headstart.

When the iPhone comes to Verizon tons of people are going to switch to it, and all the iFans are going to go touting about how much better it is because now that one little phone is dominating the smartphones, but once people that aren't really tech savvy learn what Android is, then we'll see where everyone stands.

Considering the rate Android has grown I think its fair to say that people that arent tech savy already know what Android is. Thing is, the reason why so many people love the Iphone is because of the interface and the fact that it just works. Android people dont care for it because its not as customizable, but thats one reason why the non tech savy love it... because they dont care about that. They dont care about rooting, roms, etc. I think sometimes people on these forums dont realize that we are in the minority.. not vice versa.

^You dont have to root or run custom ROMS to customize Android. Android can be customized a great deal just from non root apps from the Market.

It just works....I will repost part of my post from the previous page:

About the iPhone being so easy to use, software functioning seemlessy and polished...read thru here:

iPhone Tips, Help and Troubleshooting - MacRumors Forums

One topic I saw:

Stuck on Shuffle - MacRumors Forums

It turned out to be an easy fix. But read the last 2 posts in that thread...Thats for the ppl that say the iPhone is so easy to use, the software is so seemless....

The iPhone has issues just like ANY smartphone. If it was so easy to use, so seemless, this section wouldnt be so large. Its just like ANY smartphone.

I will agree ppl like the iPhone cuz of the interface, fine. But taking a peak in that troubling shooting section, its like any smart phone.

Maybe it just works more than other smartphones, I dont know. But it doesnt just work. I think its safe to say thats one of the biggest myths about the iPhone...that it just works.

I disagree with the bolded part of your comment. People that aren't technical don't buy the iPhone because of the interface or because "it just works".

They buy it because they can't go wrong with it. They may know 10 people that have iPhones and they don't know enough about phones to make an informed decision about what phone is best for themselves. For $200, they can buy a device they know nothing about and haven't really even heard of...or they can buy the phone that that have heard of and know other people that have them. Interface, customization, capabilities, etc. don't really come into play for most of them. It's just an easy decision that they know they won't regret (and realistically, they probably won't).

For those who think they know something about the iPhone before buying it...they are probably still buying it based on what their friends have, and what they have seen on TV. Their commercials aren't filled with specs or much information at all. One word descriptions followed by one finger operation makes them think it's simple...but they don't have a clue. If you look at the 1 thing that Apple is best at...it's marketing!

How many people bought a LG Dare cause they saw the onslaught of commercials (I didn't buy one but I still remember the "mission impossibish" commercials with the guy jumping off rooftops in pursuit of whoever he was chasing LOL)? How many people bought a Motorola Droid for the same reason? I bet most of the people that bought a Droid didn't understand Android before they bought it. But the Droid did put Android on the map because eventually, everyone knew people that owned one and loved it. That is the best marketing a company can get...and the iPhone is the #1 selling phone on the planet.

Nice post, UBR.

Only to add that many, many iPhone purchases are made in the same vein as those who were purchasing the first "slide phones," and the first phones which featured a camera, etc: "they're cool, and Sean and Todd and all my other friends are getting one." ;)

iPhone hit the market hard and it was one of the first products of that type to be mass marketed before it was in the stores; anticipation had masses of people committed to it before having one in their hands.

It had to be good to succeed over the long haul. Almost four years later and it's just now getting more than one carrier. ;)

They're doing something right.

That's exactly what I was trying to say, you just said it better =)

Long term...depends on how Google/Apple innovates more than ever now. Google has to show former Android users what they are missing, and Apple really has to prove that their OS is better. Right now I feel a lot of android users are speculating on how "awesome" iOS is compared to Android...we'll see how they truly feel in a few

In my eyes, Google is already doing this with Honeycomb and beyond. Honeycomb is already making iOS (ipad) users ooh and ahh (I frequent iPhone forums as well). Bring it to a phone and you have a winner.

I'm hoping and praying Honeycomb makes it to phones. It looks very nice. That would be the UI redesign Goolge mentioned and most ppl were expecting with 2.3

Well then that's just your area. I'm a Verizon Customer and I only get 1 bar at my house, in town I get 5, It just depends on where you live...Relax dude, we get it, YOU SEEM TO LIKE AT&T, That Isn't going to suddenly change all our opinions :p

I kind of thought about trading in my Samsung Fascinate for the I=phone next month but probably will switch to the Droid X. One thing that concerned me with the iphone was that I don't have an apple store in my area. The Verizon sales person told me if I have any issues with the phone that I can bring it in and they will try to trouble shoot it but if it's anything they can't fix, I would have to take it to an Apple store. Probably not a deal breadker for most people. Sounds like Verizon is just a sales outlet for the phone and won't be providing a whole lot of tech. support.

Or you can wait for the Bionic - supposed to be around in a few months.

I see a lot of iPhone users around the net saying on forums and making comments about jumping ship to Verizon once they start selling the iPhone.
Not sure why people would jump ship for the previous generation device.
IMHO, the iPhone is already gimped... I can see all the iLoyalists buying the Verizon iPhone and when the iPhone 5 comes around 3 or 4 months later buying that, increasing sales for Apple.

To Apple it's a numbers game.. how many they can sell at that massive markup per device thus driving their overly speculated stock up more.
They will make a killing selling devices but I bet it doesn't increase their userbase much.
The iPhone 4 did not really help them in this department, and all this Verizon not having it that the iFans tout is hyperbole, at best.
It will go up, but I doubt their userbase increases much.

Actually, I just may do that. I think I will just return the SF and go back to my Droid 1 and wait and see what comes out in the next two months. I know they are coming out with some new 4G phones but I probably won't have 4G service in my area for another year or two.
