[Verizon] New Galaxy Nexus user, System update

stealthrt

Lurker
Hey all, i have rooted my Nexus (Verizon LTE) and everything went well. However, it keeps popping up "system update" and its the ICL53F update (10.7mb). I tried telling it to update but it just loops at bootup when it does and i have to use CW to restore back to factory.

How can i update to the 4.0.4 android version? Whenever i read the tutorials it says you must have version 4.0.2 before doing it. I have version 4.0.1.

I used WAG's rootkit 1.3 to root my phone.

Thanks for your time,

David

You can't flash an OTA update unless you have the stock recovery. Lulicky, it's pretty easy to flash the update with Clockworkmod.

The easiest way would probably be to just flash this ROM:

[ROM]IMM30B 4.0.4 Stock,rooted,deodexed,zipaligned,busybox,insecure boot + mods zips - xda-developers

Just download it to your phone and boot into Clockworkmod. IT'S ALWAYS RECOMMENDED TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU FLASH ANYTHING. Then, it says wiping the davlik cache is recommended but since you're coming from stock 4.0.1 a factory reset is not required. Then install from zip and you should be good to go.

Also, FYI post in this forum in the future since you have Verizon:

Remember: You can't take official updates if you don't have stock recovery installed.

I have rooted Nexus LTE and it says I have 4.0.2. When I tried to update it gave me a little man with Red Box. I took the battery out and reboot and it restored old phone but now I am getting System Update msg every hour. Am I in the same situation with 4.0.1 user?

Can I install stock recovery on rooted Nexus? How?

Also, can I unroot - get system update - root again?

Judging by your quote below, you are rooted? Do you have Clockwork Mod Recovery installed? It will block notifications of OTA by default.

You can install the 4.0.4 update without unrooting. However, I believe it does break root which is quite easy to re achieve.
You can download the update from here:

I would still ensure, after flashing CWM that you have a nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong.

Thanks for the info. I installed Clockworkmod Recovery Manager as you've mentioned but I'm still getting the notification. Do I need to do anything else?

it is possible you flashed the clockwork recovery, and then rooted, but the recovery didnt stick...

and that would be why you are seeing the update reminder

I've been rooted for a long time. Just installed the recovery mgr and was able to do Nadroid backup using it. But still getting the notification. Would it stop if I go to 4.0.4 ? Do I have to root again if I do 4.0.4? I use wifi tethering. Do I need to reinstall tethering after the Root?

What's the recovery mgr? You will need to decide what your goals are first. Do you WANT to move on to 4.0.4 or would you rather stay on your current configuration? Updating would stop the notification yes. You may have to root again, it depends on which route you take to load 4.0.4 should you choose to do so. If you have a custom recovery such as Clockworkmod, you can also just flash a rooted, 4.0.4 rom (based on newly released code) and be on the same thing while keeping root the whole time.

For your last question, you would need to reinstall any standalone tether apps if that's what you're using. I might add that many custom roms have tethering capabilities built in. Otherwise, if you use Titanium Backup or similar, you can back up your apps & settings now and then restore them all after you are on a new rom.

So bottom line, there are multiple ways to get there if you want to update in the first place. There are also ways to stop the update notification if you want to stay on your current configuration for that matter.

I have something similar. I'm at 4.0.2, rooted, and with ClockworkModRecovery. When I reboot into recovery mode I get the Android guy standing up icon for about one second, then I get the icon with the droid lying down, panel open, and red triangle with an exclamation point. At that point I have to pull the battery. I can't even boot to the recovery menu. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the AndroidForums, Larry!

Sounds like you've still got the /system/recovery-from-boot.p file on your system which makes Android re-flash the stock recovery upon each shut down.

Try using my app (Android Root Toolkit) to make the recovery "stick" (it just renames the aforementioned file) and then re-flash your CWM recovery.

That should fix you up.

Cheers and glad you signed-up with us here at AF :).

*snip*

Are you sure about that? My phone on 4.0.2 stock ROM was giving me 4.0.4 update notifications every few minutes (never timed it, not sure what the interval really is), and I did indeed have Clockwork Mod Recovery installed and working. I'm now on a 4.0.4 ROM (deodexed and the like), and if I flash back to my backup of my 4.0.2 ROM it'll still get the notification.

Yeah, a custom recovery will block the auto-installation of an OTA, but a stock Android will happily keep seeing (and downloading and nagging) about an uninstalled OTA.

My Xoom's been doing that to me for several weeks now, LOL ;) :).

You've got to do other things to keep the OTA from being checked and/or downloaded (don't exactly know what they are for ICS on the GNex (I could tell you for the DX, but that doesn't help here ;))).

Cheers!
