Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

After talking with my brother (currently owns 5 Wireless Zone VZW franchises) he said that the unlimited plans will go away but he actually prefers the new plans because they did away with the 29.99 data plans and you just share data for all phones on your plan. This is good bc I can activate my gt7 and just share 8gb months between my wife and my smartys. He basically eluded to having as many data lines as you want just have to share the data. If this is accurate it will actually be better cost wise for my monthly bill.

Not trying to be rude at all here, but what do expect your brother to say? As a VZW store owner he has to try to polish this big turd that VZW just gave him to sell. He has no other choice but to say it's better.

Prove it, please. I started a thread asking people making these statement to show us the savings. I think you will find you are wrong. Because, yeah, they did away with the $29.99 data charge and replaced it with a $70 charge, which is how much you now pay for two phones sharing the exact same amount of data as two $29.99 lines. So I'd like to see where your savings is coming from. Or did your brother put you up to posting this?

We (me, wife, father-in-law) will save 30$ per month off our present bill by switching to the new shared plan (would lose unlimited data which we presently have on all 3 phones). On the new plan we'll have 6GB data between us 3 (which is fine we've collectively never gone over 3 GB), but will now have unlimited texts and talking. We presently have 1400 minutes shared and 3 different text plans that match our usages and have gone over on talking minutes. Not saying it's a better plan, but 30$ is $30. I still think their prices are too high and it's a bill I dislike paying each month. Almost as much as the cable bill, but not quite

I've already pre-ordered my S3 and was eligible under the "new every 2" promotion. My wife needs a new phone but is locked in to her Droid Pro until at least next January. The guy at the VZW store told me to add a line for $10/mo and I could purchase her the iPhone for $199. So I did. I can transfer that phone to her existing phone number and keep unlimited data. But the third line will require data package since it's Droid, correct? Is the solution simply to find an old VZW flip-phone (no data package required) and swap that w/her Droid pro on the new line? Thanks!

Do you have an old dumb phone you can put on the new line? That way you won't have to carry data on it. This is what I did. So looking forward to my new GSIII!

This plan is ideal for heavy talkers who all have smartphones but use light amounts of data. Light talkers, or family plans with even one dumbphone, this is not a good value unless they NEED unlimited talk.

We use a ton of data, but we use it on WIFI :p

But I agree

he meant with the way some people are getting ship dates 5000 years in the future that is how it would be the longest thread.

But we have 700+ years according to the estimated shipping dates ;)

Just checked my order status and its still saying not available. Im starting feel a little left out of this whole having a 700 year expected date thing. :dontknow:

Oh I see now LOL I had another Gulf War moment there

At least you guys HAVE a ship date (albeit 700 years from now)... mine's still saying "no estimated ship date"...

Actually mine has now gone back to saying "Not available at this time." Every now and then if I check it, it will show some other ridiculous date. Hopefully they fix this soon and get us some real ship dates.

By my math you save $20, not $30, but I guess that's still savings. $90+ $10(1400 min/3 lines) + $30(text) + $90(data x 3) = $220 vs $120(3 smartphones) + $80(6gb data) =$200. $20 savings. The savings is less if you aren't paying for the unlimited text(like I pay $5 for 250 texts/month, which is long gone), and could go away entirely. Did I forget something?

So there IS someone that these plans work for.

Cable bill! Don't get me started on that one.

Share Everything Calculator - Verizon Wireless

Here is a calculator that Verizon has up on their website that tells you what is the best plan for you based off your usage. Not sure why they put this up? Just reminded me again of how we are getting screwed.

Yeah and the LAST thing that calculator would ever say is "You're better off paying full retail for phones and staying with the plan you're on."

Not holding my breath for THAT one... but it's true :)

The calculator is a joke. Remove the middle part and just leave the device and data section and you are good. Being unlimited minutes and text how much you use has no effect, it is there to distract you and think there are options and that you are saving.

This is a big deal. I (like a couple others have posted) were planning on checking out the AT&T version in person before deciding on pre-ordering. It looks like that's out the window...

That's just Radio Shack pre-orders. I would assume other places may be having a longer period than us. I would think you'd still be able to order from Verizon directly after that date.

Did I forget something?

Yeah. We went over on talk the last 2 months so add on $10 more as we were just about to switch to the 2000 minute plan until I decided to order the SGS3. It's an anniversary gift for the wife so I had to come up with joke of an excuse to tell her why we don't need to upgrade our minute plan just yet. Even though it is $30 less we do lose unlimited data, but gain the unlimited sms/mms/talk. $30 more I can put towards that atrocious cable bill :p

I currently have a Droid X, on it's last legs, and this week my work phone was upgraded from the HTC Hero to the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. Talk about an upgrade! I had been thinking of getting this phone to replace my X even before I got the Epic; now I'm leaning towards doing so even harder. Went online and did all the pre-order stuff, but stopped short of pulling the trigger. No discounts, 16G Blue will be a little over $200. But from everything I'm reading, it seems that I have a fairly short window to get this done? Pre-orders end on the 18th, but I have to pre-order or I lose my unlimited data plan - is that correct? It's a single line account, so no group plan will be to my benefit that I can tell.

Trying to decide what to do - but the more I play with and learn about the Epic, the more tempting it is to go for it. Thoughts?

Important information about your Samsung Galaxy S III
Congratulations and thank you for your Samsung Galaxy S III purchase. We know that you are anxiously awaiting the arrival of your new phone.
Unfortunately, our original confirmation email to you contained an incorrect Ship By Date of June 6; the actual ship date for your order is July 9.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We recognize that you have a choice in wireless service and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.

I wonder how many of us overlooked that when they sent it.

Wow, just used the calculator for the new plans. For my single line account with the 450min/unlimited txt and data I pay $90 before my discount. With their new plan it would be $110. My data usage fluctuates from a gig to over 2 once in a while.

So with the 2-5 gig single smartphone plan I would be paying an extra $20 a month. An extra $240 a year. I will definitely be exploring other options before upgrading to my next phone after this. Really messed up Verizon is shafting us on single line plans. But, wow, I get to share data with myself! Whoo-hoo!

Whatever, ...back to the whiskey. :beerglass:

So when do pre-orders end the 17th or the 18th if either of these dates I'd true I guess I have a decision to make soon.

My wife preordered this today for me. I get the sg3 before my upgrade, an in return I have to get her a new phone off contract. She wants the iPhone 5, so maybe I can change her mind on that between now and when it comes out.
One thing I did not like was not being able to get the sg3 an just have it added to the bill. I had to pay for the phone with a credit card to complete the order. I don't know if it was that way for everyone, or because she has an iPhone on her account.

I'm on TMobile now prepaid, only pay $30 a month

Yup, I pre ordered on VZW.com today after hearing about the new data family plans. I did originally PO at BB (I had a gift card) and now have another gc for $50. I called them up today and the guy felt bad about not knowing if my unlimited plan would still hold. He told me to just order from VZW to be sure. I didn't have to cancel my po with them, I just won't pick up the phone when it arrives. No penalties. I'm sure I'll use my gc's at the store...buy some movies for the kiddos and nephews :).
BB refunded my $50 gift card i purchased to PO the phone. Zero loss canceling and going with VZW. That and BB still didn't know what the price would be.

If they are shutting down preorders on the 17th it does hint at around the 20th being the planned or desired release date. Also with the court case for Apple vs Samsung being about the 20th Verizon might not want to wait or they could be the only carrier who hasn't sold any if Apple gets any traction in court.

Yeah, I was looking for that option too. I've used it before. VZW has a whole new layout for buying/checking out and the only payment option seems to be debit/CC....you can't even use a VZW gift card. Last phone I bought was my Thunderbolt.

Verizon and sprint both stopped customers from adding equipment feee to there bills. I am not sure about the other carriers. Sprints reasoning for it was due for accounting and audit purposes. They were having a hard time doing cost analysis, taxes, Essentially breaking down the plans to see what parts were profitable, and separating it out at tax time was getting confusing. I would imagine Verizon's reason were similar.
