[Verizon] [ROM] AOKP JB-MR1 Milestone 2 [4.2.2] (07.21.13) TORO

I restored my apps (no data) using Titanium and already tried clearing the data for Google Search.
Try an uninstall and reinstall of the app, but don't use TiBu. Then boot into recovery and under advanced setting Fix Permissions. Then wipe cache and dalvik.

There is no option to uninstall Google Search! I guess it's a built in app, or a part of gapps.
Okay, use TiBu to uninstall and the Play Store to reinstall Google Search. Then boot to recovery, Fix Permissions, wipe cache and dalvik. Sorry to put you through the ringer but I am trying to avoid you having to start from scratch without using TiBu at all. FWIW, I use TiBu all the time and it pains me when it is the cause of things like this.

Thanks, I followed your recommendations and dictation works again. Now I am wondering if I should even bother w/ tibu. Afterall, it doesn't take that long to reinstall everything from the play store. Thank You jmar!!!

You're very welcome!

Here are some rules that I follow in terms of TiBu:

I use it until a clean install of a ROM and user apps+data produce bugs when flashing a new version of the same ROM, unless the update also includes a version bump (i.e. 4.2.1 to 4.2.2).

If flashing a new ROM from a different Dev, I will 'only' restore user apps. Sometimes I restore data, too, but leave my expectations at the door...

...for an app that costs a lot I know it can be disconcerting that it doesn't always "work." But here's the deal...

...when flashing ROMs, a couple things can affect the install...

...some Devs mod the framework-res.apk or framework.jar files amongst others. Due to this modding, the way that a backed-up user app worked in the same/one ROM may vary in the next version/next ROM. It is a part of living in the world of flashing.

So, what does this all mean?

Keep your internal storage backed up regularly so you have it to restore in case anything goes wrong.

Make nandroid backups to secure your last known fully functional install.

Lastly, when you've covered your bases, have fun and, remember that, if you use these powerful tools to its fullest extent you'll never go wrong.

Hope that helps,

jmar

Given the issues with Build 2, I'll wait. Still running Build 1 and its impeccable. Been getting a solid 24-24.5 hours of battery life a day with normal use.

Dude please tell me how your doing that!!! I am on AOKP build 5 and I can barely get 10 hours out of mine!! What version are you on and what kernel are you using??

Jmar, what do you mean by keep your internal storage backed up?

Good question.

I have a 1TB external hard drive. Every month or so, I do an /adb pull of everything on my phone to this drive. This makes a copy of what is stored on my phone and puts it on my back up drive. That way, if something bad happens and I delete my phone's storage (which I did once, no backup BTW) all my photos and what not are safe.

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask away!
:)

I've been running BB for a long time and decided to have a stab at AOKP. I'm impressed. Fast, good battery, customization. I love it.

Nice. Glad you are digging it. I'm running a dirty flash of B5 over B4 on my N7 and all is well. Running a clean install of B5 on my GNex. Been running Jelly Belly forever and I just needed a break from it.

I'll report back soon!

While I have no reports to give as far as battery life is concerned, I can say that this is as smooth as my device has run in a long time. I love Jelly Belly but I think I might stick with this for a minute. It is early but man this is nice.:D

So I went to bed at midnight last night. Battery at 90 percent. Wrote up at 715a this morning. Battery at 87 percent. Not a single wake lock. I could get used to this.

Hey y'all. I have retired my GNex and moved to T-Mobile and a Nexus 4. I will still support this thread as I am running AOKP right now on my N4.

:D

Thanks for continuing with this thread after changing devices. I just flashed this and lean kernel my battery life is much improved. I like tweaks but I like battery life better. :-)

No problem. I am passionate about Nexus devices and I just switched two days ago. Couldn't think about even considering abandoning this thread. Glad this ROM fits you. Let me know what you need.

@jmar - I have a Nexus 10 (unlocked, TWRP 2.4.4.0). My first flash of a custom ROM was JB 4.2.2, Build 4; fell in love with AOKP immediately. So now I want to update to Build 5. Do all your caveats hold about wiping the caches and system? Or is that only if you're coming from a different version (say 4.2.1 to 4.2.2)? I restored a Titanium backup (both app & data) when I went from stock JB 4.2.2 to AOKP. I haven't noticed any problems, but it seems as if you strongly suggest only restoring the apps no matter what. (On a side note, I haven't checked in Titanium yet, but can you make an update.zip with only the apps?}

Sorry for the noob questions. :)

No worries man. We were all noobs...sometimes certain aspects of this stuff will make me feel noobish.

Here's what I suggest...

Backup whatever you need to backup.

Boot to recovery.

Make a nandroid backup.

Wipe system, cache and dalvik cache.

Flash ROM and GApps. See if the "dirty" install pans out. At least you have a backup. And you can always do a clean install as well later.

As far as restoring user apps+data...

Something we say around these parts is YMMV (your mileage may vary). We say this because for some reason or another it can cause issues from time to time. If you do it and it works, excellent. If you do and it causes issues then you know not to do it for the reinstall. It generally is fine, in my experience, when the ROM stays on the same version number of Android and you are flashing to an updated version, like AOKP B4 to B5. If you dirty install then you won't have to restore apps but it is a good idea to have backed up the apps in TiBu before that flash as well as that nandroid.

For what it is worth, I dirty flashed over B4 to B5 on my N7 and haven't seen a single issue. YMMV.

And if you use GWallet, reset it within the app before any type of ROM flash.

Gotta run and be a daddy for a little bit here.

Keep asking questions, okay?

Great info, much appreciated (I'm saving your post as reference) :-) . Just a couple of clarifications: by "clean install" you mean factory reset? I thought doing a system wipe got rid of the apps as well. If not, does it only wipe the system data?

Good questions.

Wiping system wipes the ROM. Factory reset wipes data left by the ROM. But those two wipes don't account for cache and dalvik cache, so those must be wiped as well. That is a clean flash. If you do all but factory reset then it would be a dirty flash. And everything is done in recovery.

Night brother.

Talk tomorrow?

:)

Mission accomplished. :-) Couldn't have been easier. So far so good. Hopefully this will take care of the random freezes I was having. Again, many thanks for your wisdom and help.
