Root [Verizon] Root questions

lilC

Newbie
I have recently wanted to root my s3 and had a few question's

1) do I loose any of my data?
2) do I have to factory reset?
3) will I get Verizon updates?

1) no

Only if you want to flash custom roms, but titanium backup prevents you losing anything.

2) to root no, to flash a custom rom yes.

3) no, you'll need the stock recovery in place to accept an OTA update.

Easiest way to remedy this, if you plan to stay on a stock rom, flash an updated stock rom with that update implemented into it.

Can i add a slightly different reply and say that if you root, you can back everything up so when you factory reset to install a custom rom you can restore all your apps as they were. And if you use custom roms you wont need verizon updates, youll be on android 4.4.2

An additional thought, you can get rooted stock ROM's over on XDA Developers and a lot of the time they try and bring out a rooted stock ROM as soon as the necessary software from Samsung is released.

There is a caveat, you have to be rooted and a custom recovery in place to do the above.

So is it even worth rooting

I would do some research before rooting BUT if you do decide to root I can speak for the people in this forum: they're very very helpful. I asked a lot of questions before (and after) i decided to root and everyone pitched in to help guide me through flashing my first ROM. Don't be afraid to ask questions before attempting to do stuff you aren't sure about. The community is here to help :)

Once you're on the root side and you know the cool privileges you have, the possibilities are endless

Agree with Jackroo. Plus, with the issues of the 4.3 update on the S3, I'd highly recommend it. I rooted my wife's S3 before the 4.3 update and I put a 4.3.1 ROM on it and it is running smooth as butter.

I'm sry if I should start a new thread, but I lost my root due to the OTA update. Phone sitting in kitchen, wife thought she was doing me a favor. I no longer have root. Should I wait for a root for 4.3 or can I go back to 4.2...*

Saferoot works. I just did mine today on the 4.3 ota update

Honestly I have no clue. Give me a min and I'll try hotspot and let you know. I haven't had any issues with anything root related
