Root [Verizon] Starting Root - Some questions and maybe more soon

I might go for it then if it is really worth it I will trust you guys' better judgement :D.

However, I am looking now at the Lite version of cleanRom, could it possibly be a better choice? I havn't done a ton of research and they both look overall OK. I might end up liking the Non-touchwiz ones but this one looked like a good first one to try.

So what do you think about the lite version over the full one?

I looked into that one too, but only after flashing and setting up v 5.1.1.
It looks like a smaller footprint with more stock-ish apps removed.
I almost considered flashing that. And I may someday when I feel like setting it all up again:p

Do I just need to back up the user apps only? what about certain stock apps that would still be desirable on a new ROM, like camera, calculator, widgets, etc. or are those carried over automatically without need for backup?

Just user app/data.
When you start to backup/restore system apps, you could run into problems unless you know what you are doing. I don't when it comes to /system/apps. So I don't mess with those.

I just know that the, say, /system/apk/camera from one rom may not quite behave on another rom. Follow?

Ok it is in process now of backing up all user apps + system data. after that am I then 100% ready to go to get a new ROM on there? :D

I can assume all your contacts are stored on your google account?
Do you need to save any texts?
Or voicemails? Or wifi access points?
Just making sure:)

I'm gonna be signing out shortly here, that's why I ask:D

not sure about contacts saved to google accounts, how can I check that?

I don't need any texts or voicemails but I could save wifi points if possible

Well, go into your contacts and hit menu.
Then select "contacts to display"
Then select "phone" and it will list who is stored on the phone memory. (if any, those may not be on your google account)..and those are the ones that will be lost when a new rom is flashed

Ah, gotcha, thanks. I might wait till tomorrow morning to actually get the new ROM on there, in case I gotta ask some more questions when youre' available again (I guess I will just post here).

after i'm backed up I think i'll go to bed and finish off tomorrow morning :D

Thanks a ton for sticking thru and help me out so much! I'm sure you haven't seen the end of me Haha

Just make sure that you don't restore the system data. Just restore the user apps. Restoring the system data can cause major problems on a custom rom that you eventually flash to.

That's o.k.
I would recommend starting a new thread about your flashing so it won't get lost in this one.

And as Jhawk said, don't restore system apps....:)

Oops, I just about got done backing up the data Lol! I guess I misread, I thought that's what I was supposed to do. Soo how do I un-back it up or whatever? lol

No need to worry about it since it is backed up, just be extra careful when you choose your batch restore and you have nothing to worry about.

No biggie...just don't restore it after your rom flash....no worries.:)

Edit: criminy! got the big ninja chop again!!! :D

Edit again: I gotta go now...bed is calling!
Thanks jhawk for your assistance here!

haha! I think I've got my user apps backed up now which if that's all I need, I'm good to go. I only had like 20 apps anyways :P

I might try to do like you said and go to the page from the phone to download quicker that way...do i download it to the SD card or something? cause it still has to go thru ODIN somehow right?

Nope, you will flash it in recovery. You shouldn't need odin again unless you want/need to return to bone stock. You can put it on internal or external sd, and it should work either way. Downloading it on the phone will download it to internal sd by default, but it can be moved from there. Just verify the md5 before you flash it to ensure it's not corrupted.

What do you mean by verify the md5?

BTW, I can't find out how to sync my contacts to the google account, or whatever I need to do to back those up. Same with the wifi passwords, would be nice to back that up too.

an md5 is a code that is used for file verification to ensure that it downloads properly. an app called md5 checker allows you to compare the one from a file with the one you copy into it given by the developer.
